I think it's pretty!

Joleskimaya · 10/04/2022 23:25

My name is Joely!
I was named after Joely Richardson, Vanessa Redgrave's daughter.
It's pronounced Jo - eh - lee, with the Jo and eh (more like a long aa sound) said quickly together.
I'm in my fifties, so it's been an unusual name to have (before Angelina Jolie made it more known - but also hers is spelt/ and pronounced slightly differently), but it has always been well met, and liked by others.
I was always told by my mother that it meant 'daughter of sunlight'.
And yes, if I had a pound for everytime someone has sung the Jolene song, I'd be very rich!
But, it's not been a problem.
I also got used to answering to Jolene, Josie, Jody etc when younger, and people got it wrong.

Also not keen on Joella.

cupcakedestroyer · 05/04/2022 12:05

Joely, Joelle and Jolene are the only Jo names (that I can think of) that I don't particularly like. I could probably withstand Jolene just because the song is so brilliant. What about Josephine, Joanna or simply Jo?

Flopsy145 · 04/04/2022 22:23

Not a huge fan of joely but love Joni, similar vibes?

ButterRose · 30/03/2022 02:58

@cloverbug I'm Australian as well and I would pronounce it the same as Jolie personally I've come across the Joely spelling once before and she was a lovely lady never had anyone pronounce her name any different

DasAlteLeid · 29/03/2022 22:31

It’s a lovely name, pretty, a bit hippy and unusual. Works well in all settings IMO. Doesn’t remind me of the song Jolene at all (and that’s from a big Dolly fan!).

Go for it OP, if you like it x

DogsAndGin · 29/03/2022 20:58

Trailer trash

Buttercup54321 · 29/03/2022 19:26

That song!!!! Awful

user1477391263 · 28/03/2022 01:56

"Jowly." And of course, That Song.

Not great.

Joelle, Joella are fine. Jolie is not terrible but people will mix it up with Jodie and Julie a lot.

Pandypuff · 28/03/2022 00:50

It's lovely and lovely meaning too!

Afrodizzyak · 28/03/2022 00:09

Beautiful name!
Summery, smiles, flowers in the meadow kind of name.

peaceinourtime · 27/03/2022 23:15

Joelle is a much better name.

Luredbyapomegranate · 27/03/2022 15:31

@cloverbug

Doesn't seem to popular here 🙁 The reason it caught my eye is because it sounds similar to Joy and Jolly which I thought was lovely.

For anyone wondering:
"Meaning: God Will Be Willing. The name Joely means God Will Be Willing and is of English origin. Joely is a name that's been used primarily by parents who are considering baby names for girls."

These sites just make stuff up

It’s just a modern variation of Joseph / Josephine.

Joely isn’t great IMO, so if you must I’d use it as a nn for Josephine.

PierresPotato · 27/03/2022 13:11

On no it's an old tjread!

PierresPotato · 27/03/2022 13:10

It's a lovely name.

(Jolie would confuse me as I'd think maybe to pronounce it the french way!)

demoness · 27/03/2022 12:49

Joely isn't my personal style but I think it's a nice enough name. I might be concerned about people pronouncing it jo-LEE (like Angelina Jolie) rather than rhyming with "holy", which could be annoying for her.

KirstenBlest · 27/03/2022 12:19

I really like it

Joely0910 · 27/03/2022 10:42

I know this post was opened ages ago but I had to comment as I'm a Joely... Smile

It's Jo-lee, the only thing that upset me was I could never find anything with my name on when I was younger... guess it's OK now as everything can be personalised etc

Also everyone calls me Jo oh and when Jolene comes on everyone sings it at me Grin xxxx

festivebug · 21/11/2020 04:31

@Directionerforever That's lovely to hear! Thank you. Smile

Directionerforever · 20/11/2020 23:12

And yep we pronounce it Joly too. But that may be regional.

Directionerforever · 20/11/2020 23:11

I’ve got a Joely. She’s ace, and likes her name. She does get regularly serenaded with Jolene but it doesn’t remotely bother her and she just laughs at it. We’ve never met another one but regularly get comments on what a pretty name it is.

cloverbug · 20/11/2020 05:13

@Namechangenumber23 I pronounce both Joely and Jolie like Holy with a J. I think most people in Australia pronounce it this way, I didn't realise it wasn't usually pronounced like that until now! Grin

@Cbeebiesrehab I thought the same thing! Usually I love more modern names but lately I've been loving older names for some reason. Smile

It does have a happy vibe. It makes me think of Joely Richardson and she is stunning.

I also like the name Vanessa.
