Boys:

William
Anthony
Thomas
Robin
Peter
Laurence

Girls:

Eleanor (I don't like Ellie as a shortening though, so not sure about this one)
Elspeth (as above)
Louisa
Rachel
Catherine
Alexandra
Rosanna

I love classic sort of names, with nn potential. I don't really like nicknamey names, but there are some exceptions.

Names we would rather avoid, due to close friends / family etc; Alexander, Clara, Annabel, James, Elizabeth.

Middle name would probably be Ruth, (for a girl obviously). No idea about boys.

I love Thomas, Peter and Robin and Eleanor, Louisa and Rosanna. I also like Elspeth, Catherine and Alexandra.

Agree Ellie is likely with Eleanor.

Suggestions:
Other Rose names - Rosa, Rosalie, Rosalind (although these may clash with Ruth, esp Rosa)
Caroline
Lydia
Juliet
Verity
Miranda
Cassandra
Esther/Hester
Leah
Sarah
Jennifer

(I don't know my Bible very well so I would suggest checking for biblical clashes with Ruth, I removed Naomi as a suggestion as she was Ruth's MIL or DIL).

Elia is lovely

What a nice list. I like nearly all of them but like Eleanor and Laurence the least.

Boys:

William - a bit too popular in my circle. Will or Bill?
Anthony - yes, but will be Ant (no) or Tony (yes). Best as a middle name
Thomas - can't go wrong
Robin - yes but Christmas
Peter - really like
Laurence - not keen

Girls:

Eleanor (I don't like Ellie as a shortening though, so not sure about this one) - not keen and not keen on Ellie
Elspeth (as above) - Els or Elsie - not keen on either but Elspeth is nice
Louisa - like it
Rachel - like it but don't like Rache, Rae a bit overused as a middle name.
Catherine - fine. I think Cathy is due a comeback (Out on the wiley, windy moors...)
Alexandra - fine. Alex and Sandy ok but dislike Lexi
Rosanna - nice. I like Ros, probably because I know 2 nice ones.

Great choices @ARoseByAnyUsername

Love Alexandra and Thomas

Also love Laurence Rosanna William and Peter

ARoseByAnyUsername · 16/11/2020 17:34

I think my favourites at the moment are:

Alexandra Ruth
Louisa Ruth

Thomas Middle Name
Anthony Middle Name

Leaning towards Alexandra and Thomas, as I like all the possible shortenings. I don't like Lou or Tony.

Like Harriet, Matthew and George.

Yes, good point about Rachel Ruth....that isn't great. Ruth is not set in stone as middle name though. I don't actually like it enough to use it as a first name.

I don't like Ellie either. But I do love Nora and also Nell, which I think Eleanor can be shortened to.

I like Samuel!

Like all your boy's names and all the girl's except Rosanna.

Other classics
Helen - Nell is a good nickname
Edith
Hannah
Harriet
Matthew
George

Twizbe · 16/11/2020 16:58

I love Eleanor but don't like Ellie. We were doing to name DD it but changed our minds when we met her. Her nn would have been Nora

dottiedaisee · 16/11/2020 16:58

Laurence and Alexandra

Spied · 16/11/2020 16:57

My favourites are Thomas and Roseanna.
I also like Rachel and love Ruth however really not keen on Rachel Ruth.
Ruth as a first name?

emmathedilemma · 16/11/2020 16:50

I think Elspeth is more likely to get shortened to Elsie than Ellie?
All sound names, I'm not a fan of Rosanna, it's a bit frilly for my liking.
What about Robert and Samuel for boys?

ARoseByAnyUsername · 16/11/2020 16:34

Love Francesca!

OP posts:
PenguinErector · 16/11/2020 16:31

My favourites are Robin and Louisa.

Suggest:
Lucas NN Luke/Louie
Leonard NN Leo/Lennie
Kenneth NN Ken/Ken
Christian/Christine NN Christie
Francesca NN Frankie/Chess/Fran
Jessica NN Jess/Jessie

They are all exactly the sort of names I would chose. The only one I don’t like is Roseanna, but I realise it’s a popular, classic name.

From your lists, I’d chose Anthony and Louisa. They are the names my dc would have been if they’d been the other sex.
