How about Riley? Or Elliott? Blake? If you like surname type names for girls.

I would avoid Rhodes for the reasons already mentioned on here.

FlouncerInDenial · 14/11/2020 20:48

Sorry, I now see my point has already been made Blush
I should have finished reading the thread first BlushBlush

@june2007

Joseph Goebbels was a nazi, but I still like Joseph, just because someone bad has a name doesn,t mean you can,t use it.
Agreed. But naming your child goebbels might raise an eyebrow.

OP, what are your thoughts on Cecil?

FippertyGibbett · 14/11/2020 20:36

No

Oneandabean · 14/11/2020 20:32

It’s a perfectly fine surname, not a first name though

HeronLanyon · 14/11/2020 20:17

Sound not skins !

HeronLanyon · 14/11/2020 20:16

Rhodesia sprang to mind - avoid was next thought.
Then roads.
Three - it really isn’t a first name for a person.
But there are positive associations too.
I don’t even like the skins of it for a name I think.

Topseyt · 14/11/2020 20:15

No. Not for me. It's a Greek island, and also associated with that colonialist and arch white supremacist Cecil Rhodes, who named Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) after himself.

Saucery · 14/11/2020 20:10

How about Rhodri?

Doordine · 14/11/2020 20:09

I love it

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 14/11/2020 20:07

Where we’re going we don’t need Rhodes.

doctorhamster · 14/11/2020 20:00

Everyone will think you've called your kid Roads.

Themostwonderfultimeoftheyear · 14/11/2020 19:58

My first thought was Cecil Rhodes and white imperialism so it's a no from me. If I encountered a child named Rhodes I would wonder if the parents were racists.

alexdgr8 · 14/11/2020 19:55

no.

june2007 · 14/11/2020 19:55

She is using the rhodes bt which I associtate more with a
greek conetation..

DPotter · 14/11/2020 19:51

Joseph Goebbels was a nazi, but I still like Joseph, just because someone bad has a name doesn,t mean you can,t use it.

Whilst I get what you mean June2007 - the numbers of other 'good' Josephs balance out the not so good. However Rhodes is unusual and therefore there's no dilution effect.

Best to avoid I think Barryanne

Floralnomad · 14/11/2020 19:48

But you wouldn’t name a baby Goebbels would you . The OP didn’t say she wanted to call a baby Cecil .

@june2007

Which would be relevant if OP were considering Cecil, but she isn’t. Would you name a child Goebbels?
Brighterthansunflowers · 14/11/2020 19:43

It’s awful anyway, but the colonial connotations just make it even worse

florascotia2 · 14/11/2020 19:38

If anyone is referring to me, I wasn't being 'nasty'. I was genuinely surprised that anyone might be considering it.

The OP has however been extremely gracious and polite in her respnses. Kudos to her.

Duckwit · 14/11/2020 19:36

I have to say my first thought was Cecil Rhodes and I don't generally like the name - but why do some posters on here have to be so fucking nasty?

TankGirl97 · 14/11/2020 19:35

My first thought was Cecil. I definitely wouldn't use it!

Changethetoner · 14/11/2020 19:34

Rhodesia the country was a British colony/sovereignty and later renamed Zimbabwe. It's a political hot potato, so I'd suggest doing some research before naming your daughter.

Also, it also could be interpreted as a "Brooklyn" name, if your child was conceived on the Greek island of Rhodes? Prepare for sniggering and comments.

Madbengalmum · 14/11/2020 19:33

No, don’t do it.
