incidentally her mum puts up with it because for a brief but awful time everyone was calling her Liz which was a big no no Grin

Err, I know an Eliza who is El or Ellie!!

Her choice, presumably because there are so many of them - it's a familiar short form I suppose.

I wouldn't worry about Eliza becoming another Ellie name, it's a different sound.

Saskia is a bit frilly to me plus there was an awful one on Big Brother years ago which I always associate with the name

Thank you all SO much for these responses. Initially, Eliza looked like a clear winner, but Saskia made a late comeback! I had not thought of quite a few of these points, especially "shortening" of Eliza to Ellie. I thought on Saskia someone might say "Are you pretending you are Dutch?!" - I'm glad nobody did!

I love Eliza.

My favorite aunt is called Eliza and in a few days, she will be celebrating her 90th birthday.
Her name is classic and definitely does not date!

She pronounces her name, Eh-lisa. My family are Mexican so it's the Spanish pronunciation, if you wanted a variation on the sound.

Eliza is number 38, Ella is number 13, Ellie is number 63, Elsie is number 21, Eloise looks like it's heading into the top 100.
