I am expecting lots of no's but we really like it. Have another son called Bodhi.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Well then you may as well leave your child nameless and let them decide as they get older? It's a name at the end of the day. It's not going to be the be all and end all of their life.

Everyone is going to have a different opinion on it. I see 'popular' names and think 'how boring and uninteresting' yet the majority love the popular names that why they are popular.

I don't think the OP's child is going to hold anything against them for it.[/quote]
The point is, if you change your name from (say) James to Ziggy, you're likely doing it as a positive, creative act of self-expression. You're unlikely to have suffered previously from having been called James. Whereas if you change from Ziggy to James, it may well be because being called Ziggy meant you had a couple of decades of explaining your name and putting up with raised eyebrows and other people's (yes, ignorant, juvenile, deplorable) mocking and assumptions behind you.

I like it. I used to teach a ziggy which was short for zigmund and he was a very nice hardowking boy. Never ever heard anyone making fun of his name, and I think it's very cool sounding.

OwlOne · 11/11/2020 08:23

BC and nn i mean

OwlOne · 11/11/2020 08:23

What about zachary Ignatius, ziggy.

MrsXx4 · 11/11/2020 06:52

With my common accent it sounds like I’m asking for a cigarette Grin

trappedsincesundaymorn · 11/11/2020 06:48

@CatteStreet

Terriblecreature - then they are free to call themselves Ziggy (or whatever), of course. The point is they have the choice. (And you would have been free to call yourself something else. When younger I knew someone with what was then a very fusty German name who called themselves Candy).

I wouldn't raise an eyebrow at (to take an example above) Isaac known as Ziggy. Ziggy on the birth certificate cuts off that option.

Surely then if a child grows up and doesn't want to be called Ziggy then they are also free to change it to a more normal (and boring), name.
fullofhope100 · 11/11/2020 06:26

Sorry OP

fullofhope100 · 11/11/2020 06:25

HeronLanyon · 11/11/2020 06:22

It definitely goes with bodhi.
My answer would be no.
How about Zigismund (Sp??) or Sigmund or a varient on bc so at least there is a more ‘perceived to be adult’ name available to him.

pnutter · 11/11/2020 06:17

My son is Ziggy, he's 27. We still love the name and it suits him. It's from the Hungarian Tsigi, in my case.

@CatteStreet

What if the child doesn't like a bog standard name when older?

Like myself I have a very mainstream, popular name from the year I was born and I detest it. Wish my parents were brave enough to give me something cooler in all honesty.

OP I think if u like the name, go for it. People are going to have something to say regardless of what name u pick. Just be confident in ur choice and let the haters be.

CatteStreet · 11/11/2020 05:56

It is self-indulgent, though, OP. You are thinking about what you 'really like' and not of whether the name - the first gift you give your child - will accompany him well throughout his life. No, we don't all have to be called Oliver and Jack (or Olivia and Evelyn), and I deplore any unpleasantness and mocking over names, but a child should have the option to have a 'solid' name - a name that is actually a name. Narcissistic naming seems to have swung from people naming their children after themselves to people naming their children things they 'really love' that are 'unique'. I'm sure the happy medium is better all round - certainly for the child.

MercyBodle · 11/11/2020 05:45

I like it.

Firebird83 · 10/11/2020 23:38

It’s not my style at all, but it does go well with Bodhi.

BellaVida · 10/11/2020 21:35

Not a fan of Ziggy, but I think Zane would go really well with Bodhi.

mathanxiety · 10/11/2020 21:26

I think I'd choose something not quite as far off piste to go with Bodhi.

How about -
Jago
Ivo
Inigo
Rieffe
Sage
Jensen
Leander
Lysander
Declan
Cormac
Cole
Asher
Zaccheus
Justice
Kingston
Merlin

ellsbellls · 10/11/2020 21:26

I know a Ziggy, short for Isaac. I like it Smile!

OohKittens · 10/11/2020 21:25

It's my 17yr old's middle name. He is literally named after my cat Blush the only excuse I have is that I was extremely young.

abitfunny · 10/11/2020 21:23

Wow really mixed opinions! I generally really like it and I’m aware it’s out there so won’t be liked by everyone. Someone said it’s self indulgent of me which really isn’t the case, we just like the sound of it and even more so that it begins with Z. I also love the meaning behind the name Sigmund but am not keen on that so we would use Ziggy as his full first name. Who knows, maybe I’ll give birth & think he’s not suited to Ziggy at all!

Rainb0wDrops · 10/11/2020 21:13

I like it. I know a middle aged female Ziggy. I don't actually know if that's what's on her birth certificate as I never thought to ask. She has quite a professional job so doesn't seem to have held her back.

cautiouscovidity · 10/11/2020 21:01

I knew a Ziggy (nickname for Dziga but only really ever knew him as Ziggy). He was a cool surfer type, very clever too. It suited him, but we lived in West Cornwall which is somewhat ..alternative.

OwlOne · 10/11/2020 20:59

I know iggy isnt ziggy. But it's a slightly more mainstream suggestion.

OwlOne · 10/11/2020 20:58

My teenage son has a friend called Iggy. I love it.
