The nickname Tatty

Any ideas to which name/s could be the source of the nickname Tatty?

Just watched the 2016 Swallows & Amazons (I know the original was Titty...) and think it's rather sweet. The only one I can think of would be Tatiana.

Oops. ZOMBIE thread

KirstenBlest · 06/01/2024 17:16

Tatty is awful. Might be OK for a ragdoll or kitten.

My mate was called tattie. His name is Neil.its a nickname rhyming slang Neil/tattie peal.

💀💀💀💀💀

SomeonesMum123 · 10/11/2020 15:23

it means poo in a variety of indian languages...

GeorgiaMcGraw · 10/11/2020 11:38

I'm sure I've heard Tatty Bojangles used to mean breasts. Maybe that's just my very strange family though. Still, Tatiana?

NC4Now · 10/11/2020 11:34

Tatty-head is a common nickname for girls with unbrushed hair around here. My dad used to call it me when I was little.

loutypips · 10/11/2020 11:30

I would say Tabitha! Tabby may be a compromise.

But yes tatty to me is something old and disheveled or a potato.

Watercoloursky · 10/11/2020 10:47

Tabitha, maybe, but my first association would be potato/scruffy, as above!

RightOnTheEdge · 10/11/2020 10:46

I know a 16yr old Tatiana who everyone calls Tatty.
She's lovely and I've never linked her name in my head to the word for scruffy or potato or anything else, it's just her name.

schnubbins · 10/11/2020 10:39

I know a Tatiana aka Tati but with a lengthening on the 'a' Taati' so not Tatty.

Nefelibata86 · 10/11/2020 10:33

A common nickname for Tatiana. I mean common as in frequently used

micc · 10/11/2020 10:09

Tanita?

emmathedilemma · 10/11/2020 08:45

Harriet / Hatty / Tatty

TeenPlusTwenties · 10/11/2020 07:47

Also, you can't really give somebody a nickname, they happen naturally or are chosen by the person. It seems a bit odd to start off with one

Not true as such. Prince Harry was announced as Henry to be referred to as Harry, and I think that William/Wils was the same.

whoeverthrewthatpaperyamomsaho · 10/11/2020 07:41

If something is "tatty" it means it's scruffy like for example "that blankets so tatty"
I'm sorry but it's horrible what an earth made you think of it

LunaNorth · 10/11/2020 06:45

‘Twatty’ with a typo. Don’t.

It sounds a bit posh, like someone from Made in Chelsea 'I am just going skiing in Val with Binky, Tatty, Booty and Ruffles...'

whoeverthrewthatpaperyamomsaho · 10/11/2020 03:08

Sounds like an insult or a potato

whoeverthrewthatpaperyamomsaho · 10/11/2020 03:07

Tatty sounds horrible

MercyBodle · 10/11/2020 03:05

My first thought was Catherine/Katherine. I came across a Tatty for a Katherine once. In Swallows and Amazons I know the real Titty was called Mavis, however Titty could also come from Kitty - from Katherine.
Tatty from Kat/Katty works the same as Peg from Meg and Dick from Rick and Bill from Will - so I don't see it as difficult.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 10/11/2020 01:50

The Swallows and Amazon's one was actually called Mavis.

It came from a book she liked called Titty and Tatty Mouse.

Tavannach · 10/11/2020 01:49

Tatty bogle is a scarecrow.

SE13Mummy · 10/11/2020 01:39

Tatiana
Tatum
