Great Strong Scottish Names Lachlan is my fave Makes me think of a very Good looking Guy with floppy Hair and a very strong/sexy Scottish accent

MikeUniformMike · 09/11/2020 18:33

Fergus - Alex Ferguson
Lachlan - Thingy of Neighbours, Charlene's brother
Gregor - Rab C Nesbitt
Alistair - vet
Logan - Logan's Run
Duncan - Banantyne, biscuit

msgloria · 09/11/2020 17:05

I did like Angus, but I can remember a story (maybe on here) where an Angus was nicknamed "silent G", and I can't get past it Blush

mintich · 09/11/2020 17:00

I was unsure about Logan but seems like it's definitely not a popular choice. I did like it, but was completely unaware of the Wolverine connection until my husband pointed it out

Also Fraser, Roddy, Iain

YoniAndGuy · 09/11/2020 14:23

They're all good!

I want a Malcolm revival though - Mal is so lovely.

mintich · 09/11/2020 12:43

We already have a Struan, Douglas and Rory in the family.

@ODFox it is, but I'm living in England and Alistair will normally be pronounced correctly. I've heard Alasdair butchered a few times!

emmathedilemma · 09/11/2020 10:33

I like them all but then I'm in Scotland so used to these names being in common use. I like Lachlan and Logan least, really like Alistair and Fergus.
I really like Angus and Ruaridh too.

Shosha1 · 09/11/2020 08:24

Fergus - makes me think of Outlander Character

Lachlan - too southern hemisphere now

Gregor - wanted to call DS1 this, he us 42 though now.

Alistair - love it and know two under 5

Logan - no just no.

Duncan - another one i know a couple of under 5

Struan ?
Douglas ?

weebarra · 09/11/2020 08:17

I have an Alasdair. He is 10. It really suits him, he was going to be Angus but didn't look like one when he arrived. I do like all your names, but I am Scottish.

RaininSummer · 09/11/2020 08:17

Gregor makes me think of Ralph C Nesbit because of the actor. Scottish but not a great association.

shesellsseashells99 · 09/11/2020 08:02

I love Fergus

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 09/11/2020 08:00

Gregor is my favourite from your list. I'd also add
Moray/Murray
Innes
Niall
Campbell
Angus
Keir
Ruaridh
Callum

Laughing at the public school connotations for some PPs: these are pretty standard traditional Scottish boys' names to me; not posh at all. Posh Scottish names to me are things like Torcuil.

JoeBidenIsGreat · 09/11/2020 07:53

It's hard to imagine any but Lachlan on a child. Although I did know a baby Logan who is now... 17?

Alastair is posh not outdoorsy capable.

In my mind similar: Finn, James, Neil, Edgar, Hunter, Carter, Dylan, Mason, Liam, Benedict, Angus, Balthazar, Campbell...

ODFOx · 09/11/2020 07:50

Add Robert, William, Hugh and Callum to the list and you have the whole of the Scottish ex-pats naming book!
They are all great and classic names OP, but I always thought that the Scottish spelling of Alistair was Alasdair?

Spudlet · 09/11/2020 07:47

I really like Duncan, actually. No particular reason, but it’s just a name I really enjoy saying! Grin I just think it’s got a nice, round sort of sound to it.

On the subject of dogs called Angus - I used to know the most wonderful Old English Mastiff called Angus. He was an older dog by the time I knew him, and the absolute epitome of ‘gentle giant’ - I’ve genuinely known smaller equines than him. He was gorgeous.

BikeRunSki · 09/11/2020 07:41

They make me think of an Iain Banks novel!
I do love Scottish names though, and agree with “outdoorsy and capable”.

Pipapple · 09/11/2020 07:39

Alastair is my favourite, I also really like Campbell, Maxwell, Finley and Callum.

jackstini · 09/11/2020 07:38

@mintich - he’s massive, 14 million followers and so important to Fortnite they just introduced a limited edition ‘skin’ (these are kind of characters/costumes you buy or your player?)
DS 11 would watch him all day if his phone didn’t have a 1 hour limit!

GodolphinHorne · 09/11/2020 07:26

I’m Scottish too and all the Lachlans I know are ‘Lachie’.

Which fine if you can say ch properly, but could sound like lackey, if not...

Of your list, I like Alistair best.

mintich · 08/11/2020 23:06

@jackstini is this youtuber really popular? As my kids are young, I've no idea, but wouldn't want everyone thinking I'd named my child after him!

@AliceMcK I mean, that literally looks like my family 😁

throwaway10000 · 08/11/2020 22:38

Dunno why but they remind me of Australians or New Zealanders
