What are your thoughts on the name April?

Me and OH both love it but my only doubt is that baby is actually due in April (unless a few days early!) - is that too cheesy or would it be weirder if they weren't born in April? We both decided we liked the name before linking it to the due date issue!

Middle name would likely be Matilda.

I love it. For me the baby has to be an April baby for it to work though.

The ‘Ape’ nickname comment is a bit far fetched, I can’t really see it getting shortened at all. Would be a strong contender if we had a girl and she was an April baby :)

KaptainKaveman · 08/11/2020 12:36

April Matilda is lovely, Tilly for short .

WildCherryBlossom · 08/11/2020 12:33

The v in Avril gives it a much harsher sound. April is soft and pretty sounding. No contest.

Ltay2 · 08/11/2020 11:30

I do also like Alice but can't use as a friends daughter is called Alice and I'd find that extremely odd! I also don't like Avril it reminds me too much of Avril Lavigne.

April is ok, but Avril is hideous. It sounds like Bovril.

Fromthebirdsnest · 08/11/2020 10:56

Congratulations, I Prefer Alice or Ava to April (sorry) especially with your middle name choice, but I’m not really into months or seasons as names & it’s your baby so your choice it’s not offensive at all .. I’m due a girl in April 😊 xxx

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 08/11/2020 04:28

April is nice enough, well-known, has a pretty sound but not overly popular. I think I would find it slightly odd if she wasn't born in April though (June a bit less so, as it was popular in the past due to it's similarity to Joan/Jane - which is why it now sounds a bit dated). April Matilda sounds fine to me (assuming it flows with your surname). I dont think April will be shortened, personally.

I must admit I do prefer May (as a first name, it's overused in the middle). And I don't think May's need to be born in May as its such a classic name (used by the Victorians/Edwardians in the "flower" name trend, as well being historically long used as a nn for Mary and Margaret).

DramaAlpaca · 08/11/2020 02:51

I really don't like it. Sorry.

VenusClapTrap · 07/11/2020 20:32

Lovely name. Love Avril too.

Hazelgood · 07/11/2020 19:35

April is a lovely name, regardless of what month she is born in. Sweet and simple Smile

Ltay2 · 07/11/2020 19:35

I think April is a name that is short sounding already and so unlikely to be shortened further. I know an Alice and she never gets shortened to 'Al'.

April Matilda is really, really lovely, irrespective of her birth month IMHO.

MikeUniformMike · 07/11/2020 19:25

I know an April and AFAIK nobody calls her Ape.

Ltay2 · 07/11/2020 19:22

Honestly not bothered about nicknames, nicknames can come from anything and Ape / Apes would just be seen as her nickname and not necessarily linked to anything else if that was what it ended up as. Plenty of other names have weird shortenings too I suppose.

I don't like the potential shortenings of Matilda at all, Mat, Mattie, Tilly, Tilda, whatever anybody else decides to come up with. Tbh would prefer April being shortened to Ape as at least there's only really that one possible outcome!

Wonders if all the little Mays, Maes, Mais are born in May?

MikeUniformMike · 07/11/2020 19:09

nn Ape.

HotGlueGun · 07/11/2020 19:07

It's lovely.

SocialBees · 07/11/2020 19:06

April is a lovely name. Personally I'd expect a girl named April to be born in April.

WandaDavy · 07/11/2020 19:04

Love the name. Wouldn't matter which month they were born in. June is a common name and I never wonder when they were born.

Ltay2 · 07/11/2020 19:00

That's odd I feel like I see Matilda mentioned a lot on MN but never seen April discussed!

Definitely prefer April to Matilda at the moment though for first name.

We don't find out the sex until Monday so could all be unnecessary worries 😂

I've never liked the name April, I can't understand the Mumsnet love for it, but Matilda is lovely.

Antonin · 07/11/2020 13:37

You could go for the less predictable Avril

Sometimesonly · 07/11/2020 13:35

I like it.

YoniAndGuy · 07/11/2020 13:28

Sorry I did automatically think of April Jones.

I don't like it as a name - it's a bit wet really. Not much to it. Also, I can't help thinking it's almost more naff if you're an April born in April.

Nickname? Ape?

Much, much prefer Matilda.

user495275 · 07/11/2020 13:08

April Matilda is a really nice combination, even better with the fact she's actually due in April. I see people on here calling August born babies Winter and such like. I've always thought it's strange.

I didn't automatically think of April Jones either.
