Me and DH both like the name Elsie but I also really like/prefer Lucy. He's not as keen. What are your thoughts?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

@MissingDietCoke

I have a Lucy, aged 7. Only one in her school. That said, her friends have started abbreviating it to either "Luce" which I can't stand, or "Lulu" which I'm not crazy about either. She's always Lucy at home though!
Yes, my neice is called Lucy and although some people shortened it, not many people did. Some people shorten ALL names, so annoying.
ohidoliketobe · 05/11/2020 16:22

I like both, but Elsie and other 'old lady' names are very popular at the moment round my area anyway. So based on that I would go for Lucy, classic but not over popular. It's on my shortlist for DC3 due in April, but like you DH is to be convinced

ClaireP20 · 05/11/2020 16:20

I have to say, I would never be introduced to someone called Elsie and think 'that's a nice name'. To me, it is very common old cleaning lady from the 50s name. I think i hate it. Sorry.
But I really love Lucy. It is absolutely beautiful.

Lucy. Not keen on Elsie.

I love Elsie

ClaireP20 · 05/11/2020 16:17

I dislike Elsie, it is so old fashioned, and I usually like old fashioned. But I also don't think it is a pretty name. I do, however, adore Lucy. I have a neice called Lucy (18 now) and it fits with any social situation, is classy and classical, quite unusual actually, and never gets shortened.

AdaColeman · 05/11/2020 16:15

Lucy by a very long way!

TiggeryBear · 05/11/2020 16:13

I have a 4 year old Lucy. There aren't many others about (of similar age in the area where we live)

GroundAlmonds · 05/11/2020 16:12

Elsie is a char woman‘s name. Probably have lauded by Irene Handl in a 1950s comedy.

DrDetriment · 05/11/2020 16:10

Both are very pretty but I prefer Lucy.

Whatthedoodle · 05/11/2020 15:56

I love Elsie but it’s very common now, where I am anyway. Absolutely love Lucy, it’s simple and traditional as well as being very pretty. As far as I know it’s not as common any more too.

MumChats · 05/11/2020 15:55

Love Lucy! Timeless, classic, great for a child and a woman.

Elsie - not as keen and i think will date due to that style of name being fashionable at the moment (this might not bother you though)

Floralnomad · 05/11/2020 15:51

Elsie is one of the least attractive old lady names IMO so I’d go for Lucy , although I don’t really like that either .

DramaAlpaca · 05/11/2020 15:49

Lucy is gorgeous. It's a simple, sweet, traditional name. Love it.

I've said this before on other threads, but to me Elsie manages to be both cutesy and dowdy, which is quite some achievement for a name.

As you can tell, I dislike the name Elsie intensely Grin

(Sorry, I know you like it but you did ask for opinions)

AliceMcK · 05/11/2020 15:47

Elsie, it’s beautiful c
