Lucy or Elsie

Me and DH both like the name Elsie but I also really like/prefer Lucy. He's not as keen. What are your thoughts?

Both are nice but there seem to be a lot of 5 year old Elsies around (in my area anyway). Lucy is not as popular and also more timeless imo.

So many little Elsie’s where I am. I don’t get the love. Lucy is a million times better.

I don't dislike Elsie but I love Lucy - it's probably in my top 10 girls' names. I don't see shortening informally among friends as a bad thing - and it doesn't oblige the parents to do the same.

If it has to be one of the two, then Lucy works much better with the classic William (although I personally always find Lucy a bit cute/sweet sounding for some reason.) Elsie is a bit trendy and will likely date.

BUT Elsie as a nickname for Elisabeth/Elizabeth is gorgeous , and goes perfectly with William - they are both traditional names that don't go out of fashion, and suit all ages.

Definitely Lucy. Lucy reminds me of the classic American TV show “ I Love Lucy”.

Elsie reminds me of Borden Cheese (known in Canada and the US). Their mascot was called Elsie the Cow.

They call herNatasha but she looks like Elsie - I don't want to go to Chelsea -Elvis Costello - says it all really.

I have a Lucy. It's a lovely name at all ages. Of course I'm biased.
Elsie makes me think of Elsie Tanner from Coronation Street. Now I'm showing my age! Grin

I love Elsie. I think it's a much nicer 'old lady' name then many. I also very much like Lucy.

For some reason, both names seem to me to suit little girls and ancient aunts better than they suit women from 18- 70.

I really love the name Lucy and goes so well with William. I have only ever known one Lucy.

Lucy. I had a dearly beloved Auntie Elsie as a child but it just doesn't seem to fit with the other old-lady names that have come back into fashion, somehow. Lucy goes much better with William, as well.

@ClaireP20 I'm really hoping it's a phase among her friends, they all seem to shorten each other's names too. Maybe a 7 year old bonding thing?!

But never regretted our choice of name, I still love Lucy. Agree that it's pretty and timeless (obviously!)

Thank you for all of your opinions. The reason I'm leaning more towards Lucy is I feel it's more of a classic name and my DS is called William which I think goes nicely as a sibset. Also I'm a primary teacher and have never taught a Lucy in 10 years but I know Elsie is rapidly growing in popularity.
