Braven

Two days ago I gave birth to my little boy. We have no name picked out as we were told he was a girl, but I just keep coming back to the name Braven. Do you think this name is too out there?

Just out of interest, and no criticism intended, please where did you find 'Braven' listed as a name?

Braven doesn't appear in the very comprehensive Oxford Dictionary of First Names, for example www.oxfordreference.com/view/10.1093/acref/9780198610601.001.0001/acref-9780198610601

That's not the only reliable 'authority', of course - after all, who (except some governments, by their laws) has any power to decide that a word is a name and not a random word? But it contains many thousands of names, and can be a useful guide.

Anyway, as well as being the title of a movie featuring action heroes and drug-dealers, Braven is the name of an audio equipment brand.

And, perhaps more importantly, it's also the name of a leadership training and mentoring programe for BAME young people in the USA bebraven.org/

I looked it up and it is a name, although clearly not a popular one on MN.

But I don't think it sounds bad, you should use it if you like it OP.

emilybrontescorsett · 05/11/2020 12:46

Hell do not call him Bugsy that’s just daft.

KaptainKaveman · 05/11/2020 12:43

If it's a title of a film you're after, what about Bugsy?

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 05/11/2020 12:33

I think the hormones are clouding your judgement, OP. It's not a good choice. The kid will stand out for all the wrong reasons.

Champy87 · 05/11/2020 09:47

@HarryLimeFoxtrot

I’d go for something like Blaise instead. Still unusual, but a long-established name.
I second this
ProudAuntie76 · 05/11/2020 09:12

@JuliaMcFly

Seems like a no to the name Braven then.
I think it’s because it’s not a proper name! I’ve certainly never heard of it, just a film called it and it’s a surname. I wouldn’t call my kid “Jurassic” or “Hereditary” no matter how much I enjoyed the films, because it’s socially accepted that they aren’t names.
WhySoSensitive · 05/11/2020 09:03

My son has quite a different name, but that’s one too far.
Is it even a name?

EssentialHummus · 05/11/2020 09:02

I don't think it's a good idea OP, sorry. What were your girls name ideas, so people can suggest something similar you may like? Otherwise if you'd like a name that means or connotes "brave" I agree with a PP about Richard, Leo. Or maybe a mythological name?

Firebird83 · 05/11/2020 08:59

No, awful.

HarryLimeFoxtrot · 05/11/2020 08:49

BeneathTheMilkyTwilight · 05/11/2020 08:38

I like unusual names OP but this one doesn't seem to have a lot of appeal. I think it will mostly get the response of "sorry, what was that?" It's unfamiliar and kind of sounds as though it's meant to be something else. Ultimately though it is your choice and asking MN about any name at all will get mixed responses.

KaptainKaveman · 05/11/2020 08:05

Why do you want people's views? you know it's an awful name which will get him teased. I don't understand why parents would actively seek out ways to get their own kids bullied.

Welcome to MN, OP.

Pull the other one, it's got bells on.

OwlOne · 04/11/2020 23:10

Not keen.

What about Baden?

SionnachRua · 04/11/2020 23:08

LOL. No.

I'm sure he's a lovely baby, give him a name worthy of that!

CharityPecksniff · 04/11/2020 23:07

Braven - no

percheron67 · 04/11/2020 23:07

Braveheart?

viques · 04/11/2020 23:06

Congratulations on your new baby. Please don’t call him Braven, or even Raven.

You have been growing him for nine long months , take at least a few days to give him a name that will last him for the next 80+ years of his life.

Oneandabean · 04/11/2020 23:02

What about Draven, I know a boy called Draven

NoMoreFlowers · 04/11/2020 22:54

🤣🤣🤣
I really hope you're joking. It's awful. Really, really awful. It's not even a name. Poor kid.

HildegardeCrowe · 04/11/2020 22:53

Did you make it up OP?

Emelene · 04/11/2020 22:51

I think it's quite confusing as a first name - I think you'd have to repeat and spell it a lot. Is it a word? Are there any other names you like? Congratulations on your baby xxx

Alicatz66 · 04/11/2020 22:50

Don't do it .. it's hideous
