Favourite from our boys shortlist

Due a little boy in new year. Had a thread several days ago when we were considering Laurence/Laurie for a little boy but OH decided in the end he actually really doesn't like it 🙄 so am back to the shortlist and trying to decide how I feel about the names as we're struggling to both get excited on a particular name. My favourite now and only one that I'm really feeling is Jamie though I know DH is not overly keen and probs humouring me as he knows it's now top of my list. DH is most keen on Frank and Douglas I think. Will be brother to Josephine (Jo/Josie usually).

Jamie
Harry
Frank
Harris
Harrison (Harry as nn)
Lewis
Douglas (Doug/Dougie as nn)
Finlay (Finn)
Rory
Archie
Joshua (Josh)

Middle names options of
Douglas
Patrick
Angus
Robert
William

Which would you choose?

Finlay or Lewis

William or Robert for middle names

MercyBodle · 02/11/2020 11:19

I love
Frank (but dislike Francis and Franklin - Frank is fine as the full name)
Harry
Harris
Lewis
Douglas
Rory
Archie

DramaAlpaca · 01/11/2020 23:12

I love Rory Douglas.

The only names I dislike are Archie (cutesy) and Frank (ugly). The rest are fine.

I don't think I'd have Josie and Jamie though.

SadWife2020 · 01/11/2020 23:03

I think Josie and Jamie / Josh is too samey.

I think the more traditional names on your list are the best in general and to go with Josie. I also prefer a full name to a diminutive. Josie and Douglas is great. All your middle names are great - would you consider any of these for the first name?

Happenchance · 01/11/2020 21:11

Douglas Patrick

OhTheRoses · 01/11/2020 20:57

Not wild about your list.
Prefer Henry over Harry. James over Jamie.
What about Hamish or Magnus?
Prefer Gregor to Gregory.
Ruaridh to Rory.
Have known a couple of Scottish Barclays

MikeUniformMike · 01/11/2020 20:43

Jamie - short for James
Harry - ok but I know so many
Frank - not keen
Harris - not sure
Harrison (Harry as nn) - no
Lewis - not sure
Douglas (Doug/Dougie as nn) - yes
Finlay (Finn) - too popular
Rory - he'd be Wowy or Vovy, so a no
Archie - no
Joshua (Josh) - no

Middle names options of
Douglas
Patrick
Angus
Robert
William

I'd call him James Douglas (Jamie). or Douglas James.(Doug)

ifiwasascent · 01/11/2020 14:36

Douglas (Dougie)

Marshmel · 01/11/2020 13:58

Finlay Angus is wonderful. I just love Scottish names.

hughthehedgehog · 01/11/2020 12:25

Not going to lie the whole possibility of a speech impediment does make me worry with Rory... also had quite a lot of loose acquaintances who named their kids Rory recently though alternative spellings and wouldn't stop me using it does also put me off slightly tbh...

I like best :

Finlay (Finn)
Rory
Archie

I dislike the most:

Harry
Frank
Lewis
Douglas (Doug/Dougie as nn)

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 01/11/2020 08:27

Finlay is my fave. (Although Laurie is lovely - are you sure you can't persuade DH?)

Jamie and Josephine sounds a bit samey. I've gone right off Rory ever since someone pointed out that it's a very tricky name to say if you have speech impediment.

Whatsyourflava · 01/11/2020 07:39

Angus is also a favourite of mine

Whatsyourflava · 01/11/2020 07:38

Jamie - nice name. In terms of the same initial - "post" is barely an issue now.certainly won't be in 15 years.
Harry - nice
Frank - nice and prefer Frank to Francis
Harris - nice
Harrison (Harry as nn) - nice
Lewis - nice - joint favourite
Douglas (Doug/Dougie as nn) - nice
Finlay (Finn) - nice
Rory - bit boring and meh
Archie - nice - favourite
Joshua (Josh) - nice - favourite

Thank you for all your replies.

@MockneyReject I did actually have Gregory on our original list but DH vetoed that one too 😕 making him sound quite mean and awkward on here but there quite a few of his suggestions that I've shot down too!

Should also have said we're Scotland based so Harris and Lewis are actually seen as fairly classic stand alone/non-surnamey names up here.

MockneyReject · 31/10/2020 17:09

From your list(s), I like
Angus/Gus
Douglas/Dougie/Doug
Rory

I dislike Harry/Harrison, Archie, Lewis, Jamie and Josh + only because they've all been overused since I had my sons.

I like the suggestion of Franklin/Frank, although I also like Francis.
In a similar vein to those in your shortlist, would you consider Gregory/Gregor/Greg? I would then have Gregory Patrick (although I would actually have David/Davey, but that's not really similar to your list names).

Ladderofyears · 31/10/2020 16:05

Rory Douglas
Finlay Douglas

(Although I'd actually have an Angus Finlay if I could combine your lists and call him Gus).

DelphiniumBlue · 31/10/2020 15:54

I wouldn't have 2 siblings with same initial,( post isuues!) so that rules out Jamie and Joshua.
Harris and Harrison are surnames., not first names, so lack that classic feel you seem to be liking generally. Lewis spelt that way is also not so classic, Louis would be better.
Archie will date very quickly . If you want Finn, then choose it over Finlay, it is it's own name.

I really like Rory, also Douglas and Angus are cool. Robert would be a good choice also - it's not used a lot these days ( no Roberts in my London primary) but is still quite classic. William is nice, we have approx 1 in each year group, but you have to be firm on the NN for that if you don't want Willy!

AdaColeman · 31/10/2020 15:25

Lewis Rory and Douglas are my favourites.

Not at all keen on Harry/Harrison/Harris or Archie.

Itmaybeus · 31/10/2020 15:19

Archie William would be my choice.

daisydalrymple · 31/10/2020 15:08

Of your list, Harrison (Harri) sounds most similar to Laurence (Laurie) if that was your fave.

Cheesypea · 31/10/2020 15:02

Douglas and Harrison are horrible. The rest are ok. My favourites are Jamie and Robert- they do sound like boys I went to school with in the 80's.

hughthehedgehog · 31/10/2020 15:00

@WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants 😂 I know tbh is probs a good chance I'd end up giving them nn Harry anyway. Frank I'd probs end up lengthening to Frankie too- just can't help myself with a nn! 🙈

OP posts:
clpsmum · 31/10/2020 14:57

Harris

emilybrontescorsett · 31/10/2020 14:57

Sorry but I really dislike Frank and Douglas, both awful.
I don't like Jamie either, much prefer James.
The only one I like from your list is Harry.
