Welsh name for a boy?

I'm having a boy in January and live in Wales. I would like to pick a Welsh boys name. I was thinking off Llion. What do you think?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Cosyjimjamsforautumn, I posted upthread about Gwilym being written as Gwylim.

Mishmased - Llywelyn is definitely welsh.

Fflyn is bloomin' awful.

Sawyersfishbiscuits · 31/10/2020 19:58

I've always loved Bryn
But Emrys and Fflyn are also very cool.

Cosyjimjamsforautumn · 31/10/2020 19:54

Gwylim

MikeUniformMike · 31/10/2020 19:48

Llion is not used much. I can only think of 3 - one is an actor, so I only know of him.

Only on Mumsnet people are told not to use names from their cultural heritage in case enlighten people can’t say it or in case they won’t to move from wales one day. The rest of the world hasn’t got that memo! Imagine what a boring world it would be if all names were globalised to appease the English.

Yes but, should the child end up living outside Wales, he or she might end up using a middle name or a different name. I can think of a Geraldo (Spanish) and a Sergei (Spanish) - one got called Gerald and the other 'Surjy', and I can think of a Gerallt who was Gerry, and there was a mother on here who said that her daughter Gwenllian was Gwen to non-Welsh speakers. I can also think of some who use their 'middle' names instead of their first names - both are Middlename Firstname Surname and the 'middle' names are not Welsh. Think something like David Peredur Davies or Margaret Gwawr Jones. (made up names but ykwim)

Might be easier to consider this, which the OP has done, before naming a child.

Mishmased · 31/10/2020 19:38

@JaJaDingDong

I love Gruffydd Meredydd Caradog Dafydd In that order
Omg I've never heard any of those names. I've never been to wales tho 😂😂

Is Llewelyn Welsh? Please say it is 😁

MikeUniformMike · 31/10/2020 19:28

@HairyToity

I love Dyfrig, and it's an easy one to pronounce Duf-rig
It's pronounced Duvrig.
Guardsman18 · 31/10/2020 15:36

I think it's a lovely name and for what it's worth, I met a Llion in the Czech Republic originally from Wales and they all called him Llion.

Go with it!

(Am spitting on my laptop wondering whether I put my tongue at the front of my mouth or the back teeth!)

muddyford · 31/10/2020 15:15

Owain (pronounced Owine)?

Tweetypietwo · 31/10/2020 12:19

Emrys is a nice name? 🙂

yellowmaoampinball · 31/10/2020 11:04

I'd never heard of Llion! Is it unusual every where I wonder or just a quirk of the bit of Wales I'm in?

I like it, it sounds nice and I definitely don't subscribe to the idea of worrying about the English not being able to pronounce stuff. Go for it!

CaffiSaliMali · 31/10/2020 11:00

Llion is nice but I prefer Osian and I think Osian is easier to say (although some will mispronounce the 'an' as 'un').

I know several non Welsh speaking Welsh people who would pronounce Osian as 'osh-un' and Seren as 'Serrun' and Macsen as 'Mac-sun' for example.

I would suggest thinking about various possible mispronunciations which could crop up in advance and whether you can live with them.

My mother is a native Welsh speaker and my Dad is English. I was born and raised in England and my mother didn't think about the (IMO) very obvious way English people would mispronounce my name. It annoys her greatly and she would get snappy with people who got it wrong.

I hope to use Welsh names for my children but am taking the approach of thinking of mispronunciations in advance. So I can live with Ey-ruh for Eira but not Mire for Mair for example. I'm hoping it will annoy me less if I have a child with one of those names, although perhaps I will turn into my mother Grin

Mollyboom · 31/10/2020 09:27

Rhodri
Iestyn
Ioan
Griff
Owen
Rhys
Talfan

These can all be pronounced by non Welsh speakers. With Llion the double LL is problematic and you risk his name not being the one you gave him. Its the same with LLewleyn

JaJaDingDong · 31/10/2020 09:21

Bryn or dowie

Do you mean Dewi?

JaJaDingDong · 31/10/2020 09:20

😀😀😀

NiceGerbil · 31/10/2020 07:54

Sorry for barging on to a thread for Welsh speakers last night and banging on about Ivor the engine!

I was rather pissed Grin

Frolicacid · 31/10/2020 07:13

Didn’t preview! That should read * English not enlighten 🤣

Frolicacid · 31/10/2020 07:12

Llion is a lovely name @Pittapatta. I’m welsh, speak welsh & live in a very welsh area. It will be fine.
Use the name you love. Only on Mumsnet people are told not to use names from their cultural heritage in case enlighten people can’t say it or in case they won’t to move from wales one day. The rest of the world hasn’t got that memo! Imagine what a boring world it would be if all names were globalised to appease the English.

Call him a name you love & it will work out fine.
Congratulations on your pregnancy.

rwalker · 31/10/2020 06:59

Bryn or dowie

Pittapatta · 31/10/2020 06:52

I'm in a Welsh speaking area and my child will be going through Welsh language education. So as a child I think it will be fine but as an adult they could live anywhere.

I was more wandering if people liked the name and how it sounds.

I have a Welsh name book and have been listening out for lovely boys names. Osian and Llion are my only first name contenders : )

OP posts:
CaffiSaliMali · 30/10/2020 22:07

Osian, Macsen and Tomos are on my list.

I really like Taliesin and so did DH until he found out it's a boys name not a girls name like he originally thought!

Idris, Gwion, Alun, Ioan and Emlyn are also nice.

WorriedMummy2020 · 30/10/2020 21:49

I'm Welsh and dw i'n siarad Cymraeg hefyd.
More than one way to crack an egg! Behind your front teeth I said, the top front teeth for clarity.

SMaCM · 30/10/2020 21:37

If you're worried about pronunciation, how about
David
Gareth
Owen

MikeUniformMike · 30/10/2020 21:32

I love the name Hywel. It has such a peaceful sound to me.

It gets missaid as Hewel though. It's pronounced HUH-well.

Bet her name is Nia.

dementedma · 30/10/2020 21:29

Love Caradoc!

I live in Scotland and one of my friends is a Dai, but I much prefer Dafydd which is what his family call him. Also know a Geraint and a Bryn

Twizbe · 30/10/2020 21:26

My daughter has a welsh name and we live in England. I'm amazed how many people mispronounce it (it's a super easy one as well)

I like the name Llion. My top boys welsh names were Hywel and Owen. I've known one of each and lovely people.
