Too little women?

So have a Dd called Josephine, Josie or probably more commonly Jo for short.

Due DS soon and going through our shortlist of names. One on the list is Laurence, Laurie for short but occurred to me that we'd have named both our children after lead characters from Little women. Would people think this if hearing the names together and think it's a bit twee or am I thinking too much into it?

I would think Little Women, but I always wanted Jo and Laurie to be together!

Redlocks28 · 26/10/2020 08:35

I was friends with a girl at school year ago-she was called Jo (sephine) and her sister was called Beth-the mum was a huge Little Women fan!

Disfordarkchocolate · 26/10/2020 08:33

Overthinking, both lovely names.

MikeUniformMike · 26/10/2020 08:32

Too Little Women.

Heath Ledger was not actually called Heathcliffe.

Ignoringequally · 26/10/2020 07:25

I’d definitely make the connection but it would make me smile in a good way!

diddlediddle · 26/10/2020 07:24

Absolutely love these two names, and they go beautifully together.

I wouldn't give the connection more than a passing thought and if it did occur to me, I'd think it was nice.

devildeepbluesea · 26/10/2020 07:06

I made the connection but it's a lovely one.

pilates · 26/10/2020 07:03

It’s didn’t spring to my mind. It’s fine honestly.

BorisandHarriet · 26/10/2020 06:53

It makes me think of the comedian Josie Lawrence. But that wouldn’t put me off.

Flymetothestars · 26/10/2020 06:50

I'd never have made the connection but wouldn't matter even if I had. Both lovely names

Flymetothestars · 26/10/2020 06:49

Laurence is a lovely name
Use it. Completely fine

Tamingofthehamster · 26/10/2020 06:47

If you use Josie for your DD more, then it makes it less little women

EmilySpinach · 26/10/2020 06:41

@WizWoz

Most people aren’t literate enough to realise imo.
Literary rather than literate. Unless you live somewhere where most people can’t read.
hughthehedgehog · 26/10/2020 05:51

Thanks for all your replies - is really helpful getting outside perspective as do have a tendency to overthink/go nuts in this whole trying to pick out a baby name process!

@TheFormerPorpentinaScamander thank you had actually forgotten that it wasn't his first name in the book!

@katy1213 😂 Yea thankfully I don't like Amy or any of the other characters names enough to run that risk later down the line

Mysa74 · 26/10/2020 04:10

I'd go for it if I were you OP. Lovely names :-)

Mysa74 · 26/10/2020 04:09

Yep, Theodore Laurence, Jo called him Teddy

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 26/10/2020 03:41

Wasn't Laurie actually called Theodore though?

Graciebobcat · 26/10/2020 03:26

My DDs have two Little Women names between them, one a first name and one a middle name. Entirely unintentional on my part and no-one has ever commented on the connection.

PebblesAndBamBam · 26/10/2020 03:13

I wouldn't, personally. I so wanted Josephine and Laurie to get together in the end!

katy1213 · 26/10/2020 02:35

Well, a lot of people wanted them to end up together. Best not go on to have an Amy!

Heh1991 · 26/10/2020 02:20

I’d make the connection but it wouldn’t bother me as it’s a good association in my opinion and both the names are lovely!! I also think that many people wouldn’t make this connection so I’d go for it! X

JaneJeffer · 26/10/2020 00:28

Wow @WizWoz

I'd make the association but I'd think it was cute.

WizWoz · 26/10/2020 00:26

Most people aren’t literate enough to realise imo.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 26/10/2020 00:17

I'd make the book connection but a lot of people might not (unless maybe they keep releasing a new film version every few years as they seem to currently!) But as pp said it's a fairly innocuous connection (and Heath Ledger's parents got away with naming his sister Kate - aka Heathcliff and Catherine).

Josephine and Laurence are lovely names by the way, classic, distinguished, but not overly common. Laurie is a really nice nn for Laurence - the only other one I can think of is Ren (other than dated Larry). If we could go back in time I'd suggest Effie/Sephie for Josephine so you wouldn't be as concerned about the Little Women "Jo" connection, but it's a bit late now!

SemperIdem · 26/10/2020 00:07

I’d make the connection but I think the pp who suggested “most people” would do so is vastly overestimating the general public. MN users tend to be better educated than average.

They’re not names I would use personally however I do think they sound good together
