Jayden

Is this a reasonable choice for a baby boy? My friend wants to choose it... she's white and middle class. It just seems a strange choice to me.

I used to think it was a modern, made-up type name, but it is actually an old Hebrew name - I came round to liking it more when I realised that!

Fishfingersandwichplease · 30/10/2020 21:48

I think it is a chav name and l always associate it with naughty boys!!

TheDaydreamBelievers · 30/10/2020 21:30

I dont feel its race or class related. Jayden/Aiden/Hayden/Kayden (and all spellings) have all been very popular in the last 5 years

TerribleCustomerCervix · 30/10/2020 20:49

@MikeUniformMike

Thing is, snobbery exists whether you like it or not, and if your name says something about your socio-economic background, it will affect how some people will pre-judge you.

A name might define you as being a certain age group, or your social class, or your cultural background and so on.

If OP said her friend was going to name her baby Darren, Nigel or Gary you'd probably say something that was ageist.

Yup.

Is snobbery shit? Yes.

Doesn’t mean that it doesn’t exist and have a real impact on how people perceive you and the assumptions they make within the first 30 seconds of hearing your name.

I have a real 1980s name, probably on a par with Jayden for being tied to a particular socioeconomic group. My sister has a classic name and I’m so envious that people can’t pinpoint her age to a five year time period.

PattyPan · 30/10/2020 20:40

I don't like it either and probably would make certain assumptions but maybe your friend has reasons for choosing the name.
Brayden and Kayden are truly dreadful. The sound of Brayden literally makes me shudder!

Redlocks30 · 30/10/2020 19:37

I had a class a couple of years ago (EYFS) which had a Jayden, Kaiden, Aidan and Hayden!

All of those names are now in the annoyingly rhyming box of boys names I wouldn’t use.

Greenmarmalade · 30/10/2020 19:32

Gorgeous name. Not ‘made up’, pp.

Jay is also a lovely shortened version.

CatsArePeopleToo · 30/10/2020 19:27

It's an ok name and fairly popular. Or she could go for Aiden

jessstan1 · 27/10/2020 12:57

@Hailtomyteeth

And Jared was the name for the son I never had ...
Jared is a lovely name.
Sausagedog1 · 26/10/2020 19:07

What a snobbish OP. I hope the friend calls her little boy Jayden.

Hailtomyteeth · 26/10/2020 18:50

And Jared was the name for the son I never had ...

Hailtomyteeth · 26/10/2020 18:49

@MikeUniformMike - thank you!

jessstan1 · 26/10/2020 18:29

I always thought it was one of those silly, modern names which has little meaning; probably a mixture of two names such as Jason and Dennis. However, on investigation I see it means:

"Hebrew, Spanish. Either from the name of the green stone, or from the Hebrew meaning "thankful". Pronounced: JAY dun. Jayden is a popular name with celebrity parents."
and on another site:

"Jayden is a name for boys and girls, but is more often used as a boy’s name. The name was presumably created in the US and is a very new name. It derived from the names Jay and Hayden. Jay is a short form of a lot of names, Hayden was originally a family name. Jayden could as well be a form of Jade or of the Hebrew name Jadon."

Either way I think it is naff.

Not your business though! He'll be called 'Jay' which is fine.

purplecorkheart · 26/10/2020 18:19

Horrible name in my opinions but a the end of the day not my business or yours

MikeUniformMike · 26/10/2020 18:17

It was someone on here who when I pointed out that Jaden was in the bible, corrected me that the biblical one is Jadon.

Jared is biblical too. He's in Genesis 5:18–20.

For some reason i find them less jarring than the Micah, Eli and Ezekiel type names.

southwestinmybones · 26/10/2020 16:09

That's really interesting about it being a biblical name. The spelling Jadon is so much nicer.

Nehemiah 3:7
New International Version
7 Next to them, repairs were made by men from Gibeon and Mizpah—Melatiah of Gibeon and Jadon of Meronoth—places under the authority of the governor of Trans-Euphrates.

Hailtomyteeth · 25/10/2020 22:28

Where is Jadon in the Bible? Not disputing it, I'd just like to know.

MikeUniformMike · 24/10/2020 13:49

Jadon is a biblical name, so it could be the spelling.

Shadowboy · 24/10/2020 13:32

It’s a grim sounding name. I can’t put my finger on why....
jay...den nothing pleasant sounding about it. Plus it doesn’t come across as middle class- if anything possibly the opposite?

MikeUniformMike · 24/10/2020 13:24

Rightly or wrongly, your idea of what little Diamante or Jaxon will be like will be different from what your idea of Edward and Harriet will be like.

Hailtomyteeth · 24/10/2020 13:23

@luzzbightyear
I hear you.

In my day it was Dwayne. And Courtney.

ShowOfHands · 24/10/2020 13:16

People make associations. You can't help it. It's a normal, useful, human behaviour to spot and anticipate patterns.

If your friend started dating a man called Tristram and mentioned his siblings Ludmilla, Ptolemy and Cressida, you'd make an educated guess as to their background. Ditto a new girlfriend Peace and her siblings Rainbow, Storm and Ocean. Or Jayden and his siblings Kayenne, Lilli-Mae and Tyla.

Sometimes these speculations prove wrong of course but of course we notice these patterns.

Jayden has certain associations in socioeconomic terms. Not always borne out but present in the public consciousness nonetheless.

MikeUniformMike · 24/10/2020 13:04

@FuckKnowsMate, it's what happens. The name indicates what the child's parents will be like.

Ojj37 · 24/10/2020 10:15

I’m not a fan of the “ay” sound, generally. It tends to just sound a bit harsh for my taste.

Nobody’s business but her own, though.
