Carmen
Lucy
Maria
Susannah
Scarlett
Bridget

Would also like to know what you think of each name beyond a rating. What kind of girls, women do you imagine with these names? Do they suit a child, teenager and adult woman...etc

Thank you.

CorianderLord · 23/10/2020 20:34

I like Sasha (although it's a male nickname in Russia) not fond of Louisa but don't hate it

CorianderLord · 23/10/2020 20:33

Like them all except Scarlett (just makes me think of the Scarlett letter) and Bridget which makes me think of bitchy American teenagers

Carmen and Susana are lovely

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 23/10/2020 20:30

8.Carmen - feels very Hispanic, more so than Maria as it doesn't feel as classic.
4.Lucy - traditional but feels a bit cute/young to me for some reason.
3.Maria - like Susannah and Louisa in classical feel but somehow feels a bit Hispanic (which may be a slightly strange if you are not?). Could maybe consider Marina, Marianne/Mariana?
1.Susannah - very beautiful, classic and elegant but not too popular (but could cause spelling issues with/without the h).
9.Scarlett - too modern for me, harsh sound.
7.Bridget - not that keen on the "bridge" sound, plus very Irish to me (again only may be unusual if you don't have heritage/links to that country). Birdie is a super cute nickname for it though!
5.April - it's okay but feels a bit modern. I prefer May as a first name.
2.Louisa - like Susannah in feel, but not as keen on the "Lou" sound.
6.Sasha - too nickname/unisex for me, but a nice sound when used as a shortening for Alexandra.

I like Susannah by far the most , followed by Louisa and Maria. I wonder if you could even use Sasha as a possible nickname for Susannah, it has very similar letters and sounds...

Squeakerfoot · 23/10/2020 17:26

Susannah is really nice. I prefer Zanna to Suzy as a nn. It's cute on a little kid, but it works for an adult too.

Louisa is elegant. You could use Lulu as a nn if you wanted.

Sasha is a pretty name but also has a cool unisex vibe.

Lucy is sweet but I know so many of them.

Carmen and Maria are nice names but, just to note, I would assume a Spanish connection, especially for Carmen.

April is my least favourite of your choices.

CharityPecksniff · 23/10/2020 16:49

Sasha - yes
Louisa - yes

CharityPecksniff · 23/10/2020 16:48

Carmen - no
Lucy - yes
Maria - yes, I prefer Marie
Susannah - yes
Scarlett - no
Bridget - maybe
April - yes

Uhtredmumofuhtred · 23/10/2020 16:47

Ratings are chosen after I imagine myself being called these names (for some reason it helped). Tried to summarise my response to each as succinctly as possible:

Carmen - ok sensuous, womanly
Lucy - yes crisp, sweet
Maria - ok West Side Story
Susannah - yes sweet without being girly
Scarlett - ok red, Johansson
Bridget - no granny knickers
April - maybe but leaning towards no common feel to it
Sasha - yes cool chick
Louisa - yes elegant. Little Women

MegaBloxRoxx · 23/10/2020 16:43

Sasha is nice and unusual too. Louisa is ok, but not really my cup of tea.

LittleTiger007 · 23/10/2020 16:09

Sasha is lovely. 10 from me there.

Peachbubble · 23/10/2020 16:08

Carmen - OK, quite like
Lucy - yes, popular though
Maria - no, boring
Susannah - like, underused
Scarlett - OK, very popular
Bridget - no, awful
April - yes, I like this
Sasha - yes, like it too
Louisa - yes, underused

Pbbananabagel · 23/10/2020 15:56

I’ve done it based on my like of the name plus the qualities I associate with each

Carmen - 10! Carmen’s are bold, brave, curious and determined
Lucy- 8, sweet, mischievous, kind
Maria- 7, classic, artistic, patient
Susannah - 3 (doesn’t inspire much)
Scarlett - 1, The Scarlett’s I’ve known have tended to be quite vain and self involved
Bridget- 8, Beautiful, thoughtful, compassionate
April- 7, independent, tenacious, resourceful

Nacomi · 23/10/2020 15:55

Sasha - I love this name

Louisa - Not my favourite. It is like Louise

WildCherryBlossom · 23/10/2020 15:53

Maria is so underused in the UK. Simple and beautiful. How about Maria Susannah?

Nacomi · 23/10/2020 15:51

Hi!
These are my thoughts:

Carmen - elegant, quite an old name, it reminds me of the famous Carmen of Bizet. So it is a yes for me

Lucy - I personally don't like common names and I don't like the sound of it. One like many others, no character whatsoever. A big NO for me.

Maria - Very religious name. Not bad in itself but it has that connection for me. Very common all over the world, although here in the UK it would be Mary.

Susannah - It will be shortened with Susie or Anna. Nice in itself but she will never be called with her full name

Scarlett - Original, I quite like it I have to say. It reminds me of Scarlett Johansson.

Bridget - NO, it reminds me of Bridget Johns the movie.

April - No, it reminds me of an apricot. I don't like the sound of it

Hope this helps!

Ladderofyears · 23/10/2020 15:45

Carmen - can never get past the Carmen in the opera - not a great character really. I think of it as very Spanish and a bit blousy. I can't imagine a delicate blonde Carmen.
Lucy - nice. I think this suits anyone
Maria - I don't like this. It sounds very middle aged to me.
Susannah - gorgeous. I think this is classic timeless under-used and just great. I personally would use Zanna rather than Susie or Sue as a nn
Scarlett - it's ok. I think of it as cute little girl but I can't really imagine an adult Scarlett
Bridget - old lady. The only ones I know are elderly Irish ladies
April - it's ok. Unfortunately the two I know are really dowdy but I could imagine really liking it if I knew someone young and fresh and fun with the name

Eggbaguette · 23/10/2020 15:43

Carmen - pretty, associate it with Spanish women.

Lucy - English, classic, lovely.

Maria - Marie is popular atm this makes a nice change. Like it

Susannah - to my surprise I actually really like it. Suzanne? Love the Leonard Cohen song.

Scarlett - She may live in the shadow of a Johansson. Otherwise I like the name but wouldn't choose it because of Johansson.

Bridget - Jones. Ok bit meh.

April - Sweet, youthful. Lacks the "classic" feel but you may not care about that. Alice, Anna?

Louisa - Elegant, classic, graceful.

Sasha - Spirited, chic, unisex?

user1493494961 · 23/10/2020 15:38

Really like Susannah and Lucy, dislike Bridget and April. Louisa is nice.

FreeAcorns · 23/10/2020 15:34

Carmen - like. I imagine a Spanish/Mediterranean looking woman. There's also a Lana del Ray song called Carmen so I think of that too. 8/10.

Lucy - classic English name. Suits baby through to adult. I've never met a horrible Lucy. 9/10.

Maria - really like and unusual here although popular in other countries. Again I think it suits all ages. 8/10.

Susannah - it's quite nice. Suzy is a cute nn. 7/10.

Scarlett - totally different vibe to your other names! I liked this name as a teen. I'm less fond now although I don't know why. 6/10.

Bridget - no. Bridget Jones. Dated. Boring. 1/10.

April - nice enough, pretty sounding. The Aprils I've known have all been quite cheerful, friendly people so I associate it with that. 8/10.

Felicity88 · 23/10/2020 15:30

Not an April baby no. The appeal with April is how it's sweet and simple. Also quite uncommon atm, I think?
We have a June in the family born in winter but I get that it could be seen as a little odd.

Thank you everyone. This really is very helpful and interesting to get other perspectives.

I'm going to add 2 more to the list that I've been unsure of but they keep coming back to me:

Sasha and Louisa.

Twizbe · 23/10/2020 15:26

Are you due in April? I always find it odd to see girls called April who weren't born then

Namechangedforthisoct2 · 23/10/2020 15:25

Carmen - love the name in the UK but have been told it’s extremely popular in Spain. Is the female version of Pedro.

Lucy - traditional and lovely
Maria - ok
Susannah - meh, very common for 40/50 yr olds
Scarlett - love it
Bridget - nooo just no! But it is my ex MIL name!
April - so so

LittleTiger007 · 23/10/2020 15:22

Carmen - 1 old Spanish lady.
Lucy - 7
Maria - old Spanish lady
Susannah - 4 (I like Suzie)
Scarlett - 3
Bridget - 1 Jones Uber upper middle class.
April - 1.

On the plus side in 20 years of teaching I’ve only ever taught one Lucy and none with these other names.

Go with what you like though OP. Others who know you will learn to love a name they maybe previously disliked because they will love your child.

MegaBloxRoxx · 23/10/2020 14:57

Out of 10...

Carmen - 1
Lucy - 8
Maria - 4
Susannah - 6 (i really like Suzie)
Scarlett - 7
Bridget - 2
April - 3
