Argyll

Honest thoughts on this as a name for either gender. We have a very lovely association to Argyll and I recently met a girl named this and I thought it was so sweet. I feel it could work on a male too.

If it doesn't work as a first, perhaps as a middle?

Thanks xx

First thoughts...

  1. Football team
  2. Socks or jumpers
  3. Weird thing to call a boy, but hey

I'd have a hard time biting my tongue if a friend told me they were considering this for their daughter, sorry OP.

finallychangedmyusername · 17/10/2020 19:46

I think it would be great as a meaningful middle name, alongside a more traditional/commonly uses firstname.

Thomas Argyll
Henry Argyll
James Argyll

I'm not personally keen for a girl though, sorry.

PompomDahlia · 17/10/2020 18:53

I could see it making a really good name for a Scottish terrier/Westie type dog, not for a human

MercyBodle · 17/10/2020 03:44

I like it. I had assumed a boy's name, but usable for a girl too I think.

MinaMurray · 17/10/2020 03:22

It sounds more masculine to me.

CreamCabbages · 17/10/2020 02:58

When I read it, the first thing that comes to my mind is ‘Argyll and Bute Council’.

SnowdropFox · 17/10/2020 02:33

The only Argyle I've ever heard of was the limo driver in Die Hard. Not seen it spelled your way before. But maybe I've seen the word so many times I haven't noticed if that makes sense.

How would you pronounce it? Ar-gill?

As a Scot who used to work just off Argyle Street (no not that bit) it'd be a strong no from me. Argyleshire is a beautiful area though.

Eckhart · 16/10/2020 20:16

'Sock' is a nice middle name.

GoodbyeToCare · 16/10/2020 20:15

I know a few men called Argyll but they're all 40's or older. DH did want to call one of our sons this but I vetoed (even though we live in Argyll). I don't dislike the name, just didn't want it for my son iykwim?

TrollTheRespawnJeremy · 16/10/2020 20:14

Imagine someone assuming you were named after Argyll street in Glasgow Shock
What a shithole.

Crankley · 16/10/2020 20:11

When my sister had her first child she and her DH had enormous difficulty deciding. Some of her ideas were a bit 'out there.'

In the end she asked herself and DH 'would I like to have this name?' It rapidly removed some of the more unique suggestions.'

So, OP, would you like your own name to be Argyle?

Tonightstheteriyakichicken · 16/10/2020 11:28

Boy's middle name.

dorispiffle · 15/10/2020 22:38

Definitely Plymouth ⚽️

MuserOwl · 15/10/2020 22:24

I like it!

Tillygetsit · 15/10/2020 22:22

Socks.

SeanCailleach · 15/10/2020 21:12

Middle name.
Nice to have a meaningful middle name.

Mochudubh · 15/10/2020 20:54

I mean that as a suggestion as an alternative to Argyll, rather than seeking opinions BTW.

Boys names:
Arran
Angus
Appin

Girls names:
Ailsa
Isla
Alder

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 15/10/2020 20:41

Just no. There are so many nice names, choose one of those...

Mochudubh · 15/10/2020 20:38

How about Atholl for a boy?

Escourtie · 15/10/2020 19:39

I think it is more suited to a male as it sounds more Masculine

MikeUniformMike · 15/10/2020 19:33

Plymouth Argyle and Argyle sweaters. And Argyll boots.

I'm sure you could find nicer names linked to Argyll.

Laaalaaaa · 15/10/2020 16:35

My first thought when I saw your thread was boys name.

mpsw · 15/10/2020 16:34

I did rather think of the Argyll and Bolton Wanderers (Sutherland Highlanders)

It's a military nickname.

I don't take to it as a human name, but if it were I'd expect a boy

GoldenPlover · 15/10/2020 16:34

I had to google the pronunciation as I assumed it was pronounced "our-gil". (I've never been to the place)

After hearing it how it's supposed to be pronounced i dont think I'm keen. Maybe as a middle name?

florascotia2 · 15/10/2020 16:31

Gosh, OP on reading back my post it sounds impolite. I honestly did not mean it to be.
I don't live in Argyll but it's not that far away and it's a very familiar place name to me. It's a former county and a present-day local authority. Therefore it does seem a rather strange choice for a baby first name. That's all I wanted to say.
