Throckmorton

My first DS is due in December (already have 3 girls) DH really wants to name him Throckmorton after his cousin. I am concerned that Throckmorton doesn't really work in the UK, ( DH is American) should I insist its a middle name and use a 'British' first name instead. Our daughters all have classic 'Elizabeth' type names. What do you think?

No just no. Cotswoldsy type village maybe

But as a persons name no.

Unless it's a surname for a school master in a Dickens book

64sNewName · 11/10/2020 00:16

@Tinty

Tell DH to introduce himself to people over the next couple of months as Throckmorton. Then see how long he still thinks it’s a good name.
This is the winning answer for me. Do this.
LaurieFairyCake · 11/10/2020 00:15

Totally batshit

"MN once said Baby names is where trolls cut their teeth. Especially late at night."

@MJMG2015

While I absolutely agree with that, let's all keep some perspective on the fact that the name is "Throckmorton."

colouringindoors · 11/10/2020 00:11

MJMG2015 yep

Garcellesaidwhaaat · 11/10/2020 00:11

Everg = Even

ItsGoingTibiaK · 11/10/2020 00:11

This name only works if:

(a) He's American
(b) He has a double-barrelled surname
(c) His father and grandfather are also called Throckmorton.

Allow me to introduce Throckmorton Horne-Lockwood III.

colouringindoors · 11/10/2020 00:10

Tell me this is a wind-up.

Throckmorton is a place in Worcestershire.

Morton maybe. Or you could go with something less traumatising like James or Matthew, Alex, Oliver, Noah or Dan.

feministfemme · 11/10/2020 00:10

I've attached another subsection of the Throckmorton meme.

@ItsGoingTibiaK Poor Throcky and his co- .... Never mind Grin

Throckmorton
Garcellesaidwhaaat · 11/10/2020 00:10

Not for me but is it for you is the question. Also, if your OH were to imagine himself called Throckmorton does he still like it the same? It's one thing to pick a name for a child and another to wear or energ imagine wearing it and suddenly feel very differently about it.

@feministfemme

Tried to attach a screenshot of the Throckmorton meme but not sure if it worked ...
Please tell me the missing second sentence reads, "If we treat Throcky's distended testicle..." Those frictionless ramps can be so dangerous.
LooseMooseHoose · 11/10/2020 00:07

It's also the surname of a super posh aristocratic family who have lived at the NT property Coughton Court in Warwickshire for centuries. They were implicated in the gunpowder plot

Ridiculous as a first name though

ithinkiveseenthisfilmbefore · 11/10/2020 00:06

Why on earth would anyone want to saddle a poor child with that for a name? FFS

Graymare · 11/10/2020 00:03

Ancestral lines of this surname buried in my local church. Moderately famous surname, really wouldn't use as a christian name.

feministfemme · 11/10/2020 00:01

@EachPeachPearSums
Rocky's not so bad, to be fair (in comparison to getting kids in a classroom to call him Throckmorton). Do we think there's any last name that could ever work?

Throckmorton Jones
Throckmorton Simpson
Throckmorton McGee (this one's my favourite!)

EachPeachPearSums · 10/10/2020 23:59

I actually know a little boy with this corner of a name. His nickname is Rocky. At parents evening the teacher who wasn't ph so clever at zoom didn't realise she had connected and was muttering to herself and said something along the lines of "his parents must hate him..."

feministfemme · 10/10/2020 23:57

@Ohalrightthen Yeah to be fair I think any reference to "Morty" will probably end up with a "Pickle Rick" joke as well (though that meme's already on it's deathbed, tbf). Grin

Rowdythree · 10/10/2020 23:57

Throckmorton is a village in Worcestershire Confused (unfortunately it's where the rubbish dump /recycling centre is located)

Ohalrightthen · 10/10/2020 23:55

@feministfemme

Oh whoops, there we go! Double Throckmorton for your viewing pleasure.
Glad im not the only one who made the connection. Felt very young amidst all the suggestions to call him Morton.

Do not call a child Morton, people. Not even for a meme.

Pudding01 · 10/10/2020 23:55

I would consider myself quite open minded with names... However this is the first time I have spat my drink out!

I think a mn, if it is important to your other half. But I just can't see it going down well over here 😕 sorry

babbi · 10/10/2020 23:54

Ha ha @Bunkumum. I thought of Midsomer too !
OP you cannot call your child the name of a village that Chief Inspector Barnaby solves murders in ...its awful .
Morton would be ok

feministfemme · 10/10/2020 23:52
