Throckmorton

My first DS is due in December (already have 3 girls) DH really wants to name him Throckmorton after his cousin. I am concerned that Throckmorton doesn't really work in the UK, ( DH is American) should I insist its a middle name and use a 'British' first name instead. Our daughters all have classic 'Elizabeth' type names. What do you think?

Was he not the one who plotted to assassinate Elizabeth I?

dementedma · 11/10/2020 19:10

Matthew is nice and underused these days. Good choice

MJMG2015 · 11/10/2020 19:03

Matthew is nice.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 11/10/2020 12:45

I was going to say it reminded me of the (slightly thuggish) cat in the Chrestomanci books, although that's spelt Throgmorten.

redvest · 11/10/2020 12:42

Presumably he loves his son? If so he has a funny way of showing it.

feministfemme · 11/10/2020 12:40

Congratulations! Tell the hubby MN gives a big thumbs up for the name "Matthew" Grin

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 11/10/2020 12:37

Matthew is lovely - congratulations on your baby and persuadable husband GrinGrin

Dannicalifornia · 11/10/2020 12:29

Thank you for all your replies! Have shown this thread to DH, he has now agreed that Throckmorton will be a middle name. We have now decided on the first name Matthew. Smile

Cocky Throcky. Has a ring to it.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 11/10/2020 08:15

Very good, OP.

If you’re looking for classic English names with ancestral heft and gravitas, you can’t go wrong with Balonz.

grassisjeweled · 11/10/2020 02:33

I'm literally watching 'Elizabeth' on Netflix and Bess introduces herself as Elizabeth Throckmorton

Shock
liverbird10 · 11/10/2020 02:22

Grin How about Bolloxofbullshitton instead?

feministfemme · 11/10/2020 00:49

Throckbalonz The First. No one is gonna fuck with that guy.
@Ohalrightthen Yeah to be fair I think any reference to "Morty" will probably end up with a "Pickle Rick" joke as well (though that meme's already on it's deathbed, tbf). Grin
Wubba lubba dub dub!

WhereYouLeftIt · 11/10/2020 00:43

No. For the love of God, just no.

"Throckmorton sign, also known as John Thomas sign, refers to when the penis points in the direction of unilateral disease, typically of the pelvis or hip.

" Throckmorton sign is a slang term used humorously by medical students and residents. "

You might as well call your son Penis Dick and be done with it!

SheSaidHummingbird · 11/10/2020 00:40

Veto.

PigletJohn · 11/10/2020 00:34

A lot of English people will think his name is Throgmorton.

I don't like the name anyway.

ErrolTheDragon · 11/10/2020 00:33

It's an alternative to John Thomas...

^ Throckmorton sign, also known as John Thomas sign, refers to when the penis points in the direction of unilateral disease, typically of the pelvis or hip.
Throckmorton sign is a slang term used humorously by medical students and residents.
According to the first serious study of the sign published in 1988, the sign is less accurate than tossing a coin 2. This finding was supported by another subsequent study and also a meta-analysis 5,7.

@Tinty

Tell DH to introduce himself to people over the next couple of months as Throckmorton. Then see how long he still thinks it’s a good name.
yes, that's an excellent idea. please don't do this to your child. what about Mortimer instead, sounds like a professor and quite unusual.
feministfemme · 11/10/2020 00:28

I now have several dodgy Throckmorton memes saved to my hard drive, but anything to help @Dannicalifornia convince her husband to name him something normal.

Well if your dh likes it so much, he can change his own name to Throckfuckwit by deed poll.

MostDisputesDieAndNoOneShoots · 11/10/2020 00:22

That’s not a name for a person. It could be the name, perhaps, of a village in Surrey a few miles outside of Weybridge... but for a baby? No. Not even a baby that’s half American.

StanfordPines · 11/10/2020 00:19

@SylvanianFrenemies

How about Balonz?
Came here for Balonz, was not disappointed.
LovelyLovelyMe · 11/10/2020 00:18

The Throckmorton plot was a plan to overthrow Elizabeth and put Mary Queen of Scots on the English throne.

Are you all staunch Roman Catholics and you want to honour Throckmorton, then maybe but if that's the case, Guy might be better.

I think it will be shortened to Cock Moron when he's at school.
