Love it! Not so kern on Abel

@DiabeticFirstBaby

Baby Ernest/Ernie is fine and cute but 14 year old Ernest getting a hard time at school because of his old fashioned name isn't good.
Except he won’t, because he will be friends with boys called Reggie, Albert, Stanley, Alfred, Ralph, Ronnie, Albie and Arthur - all of which were top 100 in 2019.
overthemountainsandfaraway · 13/10/2020 17:22

Ernest is much nicer than Abel. We almost picked it 🙃

TinaTraybake · 13/10/2020 17:19

I'm aware that there are things like Bert and Ernie and there's Ernest Rutherford that could put people off the name. I'm really struggling to find a boys name me and DH both agree on but he mentioned Ernest when we were having our last son and I wasn't too keen but with the nickname Ernie it's now growing on me. My favourite is still Abel but DH isn't so sure.

It’s fine if you’re planning to give birth to an old man in a flat cap and a scruffy raincoat Confused

@MikeUniformMike

When the play was written, Earnest was an euphemism for homosexual

A handbag!.

This sort of gem is why I read the baby names threads. "I always carry my diary so I have something scandalous to read on the train."
eddiemairswife · 12/10/2020 14:30

Used to be a road in West Norwood called Ernie Street. In the 1950s it was changed to Ernest Avenue; no trees though.

"The Importance of Being Earnest" is a comic play by Oscar Wilde. I love the name and the play. People may quote the line "In a handbag?"
Goes to hunt for the script.

JemimaTiggywinkle · 12/10/2020 12:25

I really like it.
Don’t like nn Ern so much because it sounds like “urn”, but I like Ernie and Ernest.

InsertHilariousUserName · 12/10/2020 12:20

Wondering if Lauren Silverman has started this thread?

elmouno · 12/10/2020 02:22

Will he have a brother named Bert? Look up Bert and Ernie.

ViciousJackdaw · 12/10/2020 01:55

Horrible. You might as well dress the poor little boy up in one of those dreadful waistcoat and flat cap combos while you're at it.

SaffieSoph · 11/10/2020 23:35

I absolutely love this name. It was one of our options and will still be a contender if we have another DC.

MargotLovedTom1 · 11/10/2020 23:21

Nope.

LilacSloth · 11/10/2020 23:20

I like it. Smile

InsertHilariousUserName · 11/10/2020 21:32

Ernie is pretty cute, Ernest ruddy awful

ivykaty44 · 11/10/2020 21:28

It was the most popular boys name in 1901

EhUp · 11/10/2020 21:27

I really like it

Suspect it will become very popular in next few years though (along with Ronnie, Lenny, Bertie etc)

Toilenstripes · 11/10/2020 21:24

Deeply unattractive name

PeaceAndHarmoneeee · 11/10/2020 21:22

It's one of the only 'old man' names that I really dislike. The other being Stanley!

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 11/10/2020 21:07

Like Ernie don't like Ernest

MikeUniformMike · 11/10/2020 21:02

It's fine but most people over 50 will think Morecambe & Wise, premium bonds and the fastest milkfloat in the west.

It used to be said as an insult when I was at school with your tongue between your teeth and lower lips.

I havent seen anyone do that in forever and cant even remember what it meant as such.

But seing Erniieeeee makes me think it staright away!
