Everyone, pls help me choose a name. I named my baby girl “Ariadne “ cuz it is less popular , however, it is hard for people to pronounce it right. I have been thinking to change her name( she is 9 months old) . Any ideas, please? I like Clare , Clara .....

@quarlly so the correct pronunciation is /ˌæriˈ æ(d) ni/

Beautiful name OP, I'd keep it.
Yes correcting people is annoying, and I shorten my own horrendously long and "ethnic" sounding name sometimes, but actually as I get older I make less allowances for people being lazy and not even attempting to say it correctly. Quite fond of my name now as it's quite unique.

quarlly · 10/10/2020 03:24

How do you pronounce it? I haven't heard it before so would probably do it wrong first time. But should mean we learn a new name and then get it right the next time x

blueberrypie0112 · 10/10/2020 03:20

Can you give her a nickname? My real name is Angela but everyone calls me Angie

Toontown · 10/10/2020 03:17

I've got a hard to pronounce name but people get it. Much prefer my name than a generic Clare/clara

footprintsintheslow · 10/10/2020 03:12

I don't see why it's hard for people to say. Sod them. You liked the name so stick with it if you still like.

You can't account for everyone so sod them.

lizye · 10/10/2020 02:50

@RonaLisa Well, since she was born on Jan 1st, people( even pediatrician and nurses) call her Adrian or Ar-ee -ar-don. She is a girl but all these people call her a boy’s name .

The reason I wanna change her name bc people call her like ‘Adrian’or ‘ari-a -don’ . Only few people got her name right. I don’t wanna cause her more trouble in future when she grows up. But I have see many people here vote for this name that really makes my mind to keep it

Ariadne is lovely and not difficult to pronounce at all.

FourPlasticRings · 09/10/2020 20:11

Gorgeous name. I wouldn't change it just to be one in a crowd of Claras.

GlennRheeismyfavourite · 09/10/2020 20:08

Please don't change it - it's so beautiful!! If my next baby had been a girl it's what we'd have gone for

RonaLisa · 09/10/2020 19:21

It's a lovely name, and I'm struggling to see how it could be pronounced, other than the way it is.

Firebird83 · 09/10/2020 19:19

Ariadne is beautiful! Don’t change it!

Lulalulabelle · 09/10/2020 19:07

We know an Ariadne too, she is always known as Addy

MikeUniformMike · 09/10/2020 18:33

Don't change it @lizye, it's really nice, not out there or anything.

If you change it to Clare there will be the Claire/Clair misspellings.
If you change it to Clara it will be Cara/Lara/Ciara/Chiara type problems/

Bluesky16 · 09/10/2020 17:48

@SeanCailleach
I don’t really get why you are saying it’s a admin nightmare.
As I have changed my DD name and the name is inserted in space 17 it’s not exactly hard to point to that box , it’s a lot easier than deed poll. As it’s officially changed with the registry.
Once you have child passport they use that as their main form of ID anyway.

You must do what makes you happy although not changing it because like others have said, people are mispronouncing the name.

FrodoFeet · 09/10/2020 15:23

Please dont change your child's beautiful name because of some other people's ignorance / laziness!

MikeUniformMike · 09/10/2020 15:12

@VillageGreenPreservationSoc, I only hear 3 syllables, so we'll just have to agree to differ. If you type Arianwen or arian into google translate, they are 3 and 2 syllables respectively.

I hear Aria as Ar-ya, (rhotic r) but on his thread someone posted Ar-ee-a. I'd guess Ar-ee-a to rhyme with Maria, but we probably say it the same (?)

Tonightstheteriyakichicken · 09/10/2020 15:02

Hard for some people to say perhaps, (and of those, a couple will just be being lazy or deliberately awkward), but not for everyone?
I think Ariadne is lovely and distinctive and besides, 9 months on is pretty late to change it.

VillageGreenPreservationSoc · 09/10/2020 14:57

To me, it's not dissimilar to 'GoT' where the character is variously called 'Aria' or 'Ah-ia' with no rhoticity in the latter at all. In the case of the 'Snow Spider' I can hear four distinct syllables in those clips, with SJ in particular clearly sounding the 'r' in 'Arianwen' 🤷🏼‍♀️

MikeUniformMike · 09/10/2020 14:53

@VillageGreenPreservationSoc, here is a link.

I think the trouble is that the difference is not perceptible if you don't speak the language, but if you do it sounds wrong.

Or maybe it is how you say you hear the name compared with how I would say it.
E.g. Olivia - O-liv-ee-a or Ol-iv-ya.

MikeUniformMike · 09/10/2020 14:43

@VillageGreenPreservationSoc, I'm sure we are talking about the same video, but you aren't hearing what I am describing.

The 'Arian' bit is two syllables. Add 'wen' and it is 3 syllables.

Arian is Arr-yan not Arry-Ann. It is a commonly used word for money, cash, silver.

It would compare with something like saying Elizabeth as Ellie Zabeth

NannyR · 09/10/2020 13:24

Clara could have pronunciation issues too - I know of people who pronounce it Clare-a and others who pronounce it to rhyme with Tara/Lara/Zara.

VillageGreenPreservationSoc · 09/10/2020 13:16

I watched part of the video which appears to be the whole thing (3 or four episodes?). I watched between about minute 20 and minute 26 when SP names the spider and clearly says 'Arry-an-wen'. Then the boy has a row with his father and tells the spider she's got him into bother, and definitely exclaims: "Arry-an-wen!".
Can't even remember what happened to Bethan in the end. I imagine she reappears. Magically an' all. Might watch it later!

Ulpo · 09/10/2020 13:04

How are they saying it then?

My name is Clare and I hate it. It's so dull.
