Everyone, pls help me choose a name. I named my baby girl “Ariadne “ cuz it is less popular , however, it is hard for people to pronounce it right. I have been thinking to change her name( she is 9 months old) . Any ideas, please? I like Clare , Clara .....

I love it and all her mates will call her Ari anyway which is still much nicer than Clare. My daughter had a very cool school friend called Ari Smile

Ariadne is beautiful and distinctive. Don't change it! If you do, especially to something boring, your DD might be mad at you in later life.

If people can't pronounce it, you can tell them how to pronounce it. We all like to learn a new thing every day, don't we?

MotherOfDragonite · 24/10/2020 22:45

I just wanted to say what a beautiful name Ariadne is! It's just gorgeous.

My DD2 has an unusual name and I have to say that most people comment positively on it and make an effort to check how it's pronounced and get it right. I thought we might use a nickname (like Aria for Ariadne) but actually she prefers her full name and everyone at preschool uses it.

Bowerbird5 · 24/10/2020 22:37

My son went to a Steiner playgroup and the teacher’s little girl was Ariadne. No one had trouble pronouncing it ,even the three year olds. I love it.

Ostagazuzulum · 24/10/2020 22:31

Love the name and love the shortened version you've picked too.

Actually wish I'd thought if it for DD!!

Userzzz · 24/10/2020 21:27

I like the name. First time I’ve heard it, but I have heard of Aria and it’s very nice!

Raffaella13 · 24/10/2020 21:21

I love Ariadne!

Don't feel the pressure to change it! Once people know what it is they will get it right.

Lovely nickname would be Aria though if people felt more comfortable with that?

yarrow89 · 15/10/2020 17:28

I love Ariadne! Or Aria for short. I remember watching Poirot (popular TV series in the 90s/00s in the UK) with a main character called Ariadne and the young female character played by Ellen Page in the film Inception is called Ariadne. I think it's a great choice.

AegonT · 15/10/2020 11:56

It think Ariadne is lovely. If you want life to be easier you could use an easy nickname like Arry. But I don't think you should change her name. I have a very popular name (well it was in England in the 80s) and it was a bit annoying growing up. I wished I had a more unusual name.

Chica1990 · 14/10/2020 12:11

My first name is really simple and people still manage to get it wrong. You may also pronounce other peoples names wrong but once corrected you know for next time. I wouldn’t change it for people who can’t get it right first time.

TurquoiseDress · 12/10/2020 18:22

Keep it & just shorten it to Aria

Don't change it to something completely different, just must have loved something about the name to use it in the first place

Just a faff to go back & change the birth certificate now

kittiecat16 · 12/10/2020 13:39

I think Ariadne is a lovely name. I don't see why others are finding it hard to pronounce either. I'd stick with it and maybe go with Aria as a nickname if it makes things easier? Smile

gurteee · 12/10/2020 13:15

@Esspee

You liked the name so why not leave it but call her Aria for short.
I like this idea.

The name is pretty.

The people who matter will soon know it well Grin

GirlCalledJames · 12/10/2020 12:39

I love it and would keep it. If you must change it, pick something close like Arianna.
People working in doctors’ offices are busy and quickly scanning a list, don’t read too much into their misreadings.
My daughter knew and responded to her name at 7 months so I wouldn’t change it at 9 months unless you only call her by a nickname that also works for the new name.
@SeanCailleach OMG!really ! This is an UK website! I thought everyone here are American. Wow, I can’t tell we are in different country until you point out. Yay, I’m Chinese American. I haven’t given my dd Chinese name yet, maybe one day when I take her to China. But I have decided to keep her name and call her a nick name Aria after everyone’s suggestions
How do you pronounce it? For someone who only know American English with Appalachian dialect?

MikeUniformMike · 12/10/2020 10:05

People unfamiliar with a name will try to match it to a name they know, so the Adrian bit doesn't surprise me.
I can also see why they would say Ar-ee-adden.

It is their ignorance OP, there is nothing wrong with the name.

I love this name. It's far too underused.

SeanCailleach · 11/10/2020 22:12

@lizye now we can understand! Mumsnet is mainly UK, and Ireland. Greek names like Ariadne are more widely recognised here than in New York. But you have had extreme lockdown, even worse than here. When this craziness is over, and Ariadne goes to nursery, the people she sees every day will know her name. They will love it.

Are you Chinese Asian? Does she have Chinese name that you also use?

If you decide to change it, I am not sure what the law is in New York. Someone on here might know. It may be different to UK.

The time isn't wrong, it was 2:56 in the afternoon here when you posted at 9:56 New York time. It's 10 at night now!

Best wishes!

lizye · 11/10/2020 14:58

@SeanCailleach Thank you for bringing so much infos. After reading all the post, I’m more confident to stick with this name. My DD has only gong out few times( to pediatric clinic)since the pandemic outbreak . We live in an Asian community in New York, I agree with someone saying that English is not their first language that’s why they can’t pronounce Ariadne right. Btw, I don’t know why it’s a mistake time. Like now it’s 9:56am, I guess it would be a different time after I post.

@MJMG2015

She's 9 months, changing her name now is NOT a problem.

@lizye

How do YOU say her name?

I can't imagine anyone having a problem with her name , let alone several people. Is English not your first language? It's the only reason I can think of why others are struggling with it.

Sometimes people who didn’t learn second language as a young children struggle with it. As a deaf person, I struggle pronouncing anything beyond two syllables and American English is the the only language I learned
SenorFrog · 11/10/2020 00:23

I know how to pronounce it and I think most people probably do, those who don't will only need to be corrected once. I love Ari as a nickname..

Sevo7 · 10/10/2020 23:43

I’ve never heard it before but have to say it’s absolutely gorgeous and has gone straight to the top of my girls name list (not that I’m having anymore)

Ellmau · 10/10/2020 23:33

Ariadne is a fab name.

hettie555 · 10/10/2020 23:29

Clare and Clara are quite boring and out-dated names in my opinion.
It doesn't help that I know a Clare and a Clara and they are both boring and thick (I know them through work).
I love your original choice and agree with shortening it.
