Is this the name of a boy or a girl?

You hear someone is going to give their baby the name Lyric.

Is your instant reaction that it’s a boys name or a girls name?

Neither. I’d assume the child has been named by the type of parent that also decides to raise the child gender free, and never reveal the sex.

To me it's a bit like asking "would you think the name 'Chair' is a boy or a girl". I wouldn't automatically think either.

Lyric is a beautiful name. I'm too sober and sensible to use it. It would make a great YA fiction character name Smile.

I instantly think girls name, this is because:

A. I associate it with famous song writer Lyrica Anderson.
B. It reminds me of other girl names: Liris, Harper.
C. The ly letter combo seems to feature more heavily in girl names such as Lynn, Lynette, Lydia, Alyssa, Alya, Lily, Polly, Lyla, Evelyn, Marilyn, Kaitlyn etc.

Not a ‘name’ to foist on anyone though, in my view.

Or even 'Lycra'! There's a thought.

I would say girl because the only Lyric I’ve heard of was a celebrity baby girl.

I’d say unisex but sway more towards a boy.

Sounds like a boy name to me. But then, Eden sounds like a girl's name to me and that's unisex, maybe the same is true of Lyric?

I could understand it for a girl for the same reason a previous poster said regarding it being along the same lines of Melody and Harmony but I just can’t imagine a boy with that name - especially a fully grown adult male in his 30s for example.

But each to their own I guess.
