Hello,

We’ve managed to narrow down our initial list, but I feel like I missed some! Below are what we’ve got so far, please feel free to let me know your favorite or any suggestions based on what we have Smile

For reference, I am English and DH is from a Scottish/Irish family. We also both have names that have diminutives, which we like as it offers lots of options!

Girls:

Felicity
Victoria
Saoirse
Poppy
Esme
Stephanie
Ellis
Alexandra

Boys:

William
Nicholas
Thomas
Hamish
Elliott
Edward
James
Alexander
George

Alice and saoirse are my faves out of the girls names. James and Alexander are my fave boys names

SeanCailleach · 09/10/2020 07:04

Oh fab! Sheehan is a Hindi name that means peaceful one, same as in Irish.

TheVanguardSix · 09/10/2020 06:57

Ellis and William are my favourites on your list.

SeanCailleach · 09/10/2020 06:56

@LizzieAnt

Sorry, Seanachán spelling ok, though really very old and fallen out of use. Probably was a boys' name?
I don't think I have seen Shanahan or Sheehan used as first names, but they sound like names. Saoirse as a name is quite a recent usage, so why not?

Girls:

Alice - love!
Felicity - nice
Victoria - love
Saoirse - pretty
Poppy - not keen
Esme - nice enough but I know lots of kids called this, it seemed to be "the" name between about 2014-2018 round where I am
Stephanie - really nice!
Ellis - not keen
Alexandra - love

Boys:

William - nice but a bit plain?
Nicholas - nice
Thomas - nice but again maybe on the plain side! Good name all the same
Hamish - not bad but not my fave!
Elliott - nice
Edward - nice but a bit old fashioned for me
James - nice
Alexander - love
George - love
Angus - ok
Max - love
Lachlan - quite like this actually!

@SeanCailleach

They're all strong. If you like Saorse, then maybe one of these: Sheena/ Síona Sheehan/ Síochán Shanahan/ Seanachán
Shanahan and Sheehan are surnames, I've never heard of them being used as first names. The Irish language spellings are all slightly wrong afaik.

Alice ... stupid typos

ScottishLassie91 · 08/10/2020 19:32

Alexandra and Alexander are two of our favourites also! I also like Qlive and James, not too keen on the rest.
I'd only use Lachlan if people can pronounce it correctly as so many say it like Lacklan 😊

emilybrontescorsett · 08/10/2020 18:22

My favourites are Stephanie and Felicity. Followed by Victoria and Alexandra.
I dislike Poppy as I find flower names weak and meh. Ellis I think would forever have to explain that she isn't male.
Lachlan is my favourite from your boys list. I don't like Hamish or Angus.
I do think Nicholas is due a comeback.

LizzieAnt · 07/10/2020 13:01
@heh1991 I've met two Irish girls both pronounced a different way, first one was pronounced: soh-rah-hah
The other was pounced - sersha
Saoirse is pronounced Seer-sha, more or less, sometimes veers towards Sair-sha. Emphasis on the first syllable (and the r is strongly pronounced in an Irish accent).
I think the other person you met was probably a Sorcha? This is pronounced Sur-ra-cha. The 'ch' is correctly said like the 'ch' in loch, but many pronounce this as 'k' as they find it difficult to say.

I don't know of any diminutives for Saoirse OP, but it's my favourite of your girl names.

CatteStreet · 06/10/2020 06:10

Presumably Ellis Rowan was called Ellis so she sounded male, making her work more 'acceptable' in those times? Also thinking of Ellis Bell (Emily Bronte). I don't think I'd be wanting to call my daughter a name whose virtue was in not sounding feminine, iyswim.

dillydallydollydaydream7 · 06/10/2020 03:56

I'm an Alexandra and have only ever came across 3 others in my nearly 30 years Smile I'm also nicknamed a million and one different things - the list is endless!

Lovely lists!
I like all your girls' names except Stephanie, which feels dated to me. And while I like Poppy it doesn't feel as versatile as the others. I like Ellis very much for a girl - have long been a fan of the work of Ellis Rowan, Australian artist born in the 1840s - born Marian Ellis Rowan but called Ellis. I've also come across adult women called Ellis - unusual but interesting.
Suggestion: Cressida

I like all your boys' names but find Lachlan the least appealing as it's over-used around me. My favourites are Nicholas and Hamish.

I love saoirse, Alice and felicity. And Angus Edward and hamish.

I’m a Victoria and honestly I really wouldn’t do that to a child. All my life I’ve had victor, vikram, sticky Vicky, Vicky likes the dicky. Even from adults. I despise my name. Also many people asking if I can do the same as sticky Vicky.

letshavecourageandbekind · 05/10/2020 13:26

As a lady ellis here I enjoyed reading the comments 🤣 x

Heh1991 · 05/10/2020 13:08

How do you pronounce Saoirse?

Richmonder · 05/10/2020 13:05

Ooh, mixed bag of responses! Thank you all for your comments, much appreciated Smile Will have a digest and chat to DH later to see if he’s had any further thoughts or is able to cull the list further.

Names are so tricky - much harder than I thought they would be. Lots of the names on the lists I like but don’t think I love. DH would quite happily call the baby what we’ve nicknamed it, but I’m not sure “Noodle” would go down well with my MIL Grin
