Mallow

Due a baby girl in November and this name keeps on popping up but I'm worried it will be a little too out there? It's a lovely flower and it seems to fit well with the middle name Kimberly. Plus it's the only name I love, the others I have shortlisted I just like.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
AlwaysLatte · 05/10/2020 09:57

Oh good point too others have maid - definitely a marshmallow at school!

Greenphonegirl · 05/10/2020 09:57

Mallow like marshmallow?
Thats what my reaction would likely be tbh

That said its not for me

AlwaysLatte · 05/10/2020 09:56

The only thing about that is she would get called Mal for short, presumably which means 'bad'.

Figgygal · 05/10/2020 09:56

I like Mallory actually
But mallow as you’ve realised is a big noooooo

Also never heard marshmallow pronounced with an e
Ever

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 05/10/2020 09:54

As in Flumps ?

No don't call your child Mallow

Why not Posy, Pootle or Perkin?

Actually, Posy is nice.

Don't call your child Pootle or Perkin.

ProudAuntie76 · 05/10/2020 09:45

Why not Kimberley Mallow?

Like the Irish Biscuits?

It would be the equivalent of calling her Cadbury Choc or Sea Brooke in the U.K.!

gingerwhingerwife · 05/10/2020 09:43

No

Time2change2 · 05/10/2020 09:41

If you want your child to be called marshmallow by her peers for many many years, go for it

NataliaOsipova · 05/10/2020 09:38

@TwigTheWonderKid

Also interested to know if anyone who is disparaging this name would do the same if someone suggested using the flower Lily as a name? After all, it does ryhme with willy, you know...
I take that point - but I think the difference is that some names are longstanding, recognised “names” and some just aren’t. So Lily was an “old lady” name when I was little, but has now become very popular. Something like Petunia has always been around but a bit “out there”. But generally kids aren’t called Daffodil, Foxglove, Sunflower etc. It’s the same with other things: Faith, Hope and Charity....but not Prayer, Virtue or Kindness. There are norms - and it’s worth considering how a child will find living with something that deviates from those.
notso · 05/10/2020 09:30

Her baby her rules huh? #BeKind

OP has asked for people's opinions Hmm

It's unfortunate because it's quite pretty but I think the Marshmallow connection is so strong it would be like calling her Mars and expecting people not to add Bar.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 05/10/2020 09:26

I think there's a Flower fairy called Mallow. It's a bit hippy dippy and 'girly' for my liking. Suits a child but I'm not sure I wouldn't roll my eyes internally at an adult Mallow. She'll get called Mal, as well.
Why not Kimberley Mallow? It flows much better.

NameChange84 · 05/10/2020 09:24

Mallow has to be a piss take surely? I can’t imagine anyone thinking that was a reasonable name to call a child.

I say marsh-mallow but in my family we also just shorten it to mallow (“have we got any mallows in the cupboard?”, “pick up some mallows at the supermarket” etc)

I’m from up North so this of the first of me hearing that some people say marshmellows.

Mallory Kimberley is a mouthful. I’d go with Mallory Kim or Malin Kimberley.

movingonup20 · 05/10/2020 09:21

@DerbyshireGirly

Mallow where I am in the east mids. In Ex London though.

movingonup20 · 05/10/2020 09:17

Is mallow what marshmallows were originally made from. Think I saw it on a cookery programme. As a name, no - poor kid. Give them a normal name not something they will be teased about. I bought mallow biscuits yesterday, it's not a name. Mallory is a name

PattyPan · 05/10/2020 09:12

I knew it was a flower and still don’t think it’s a suitable name. Just because it’s a flower doesn’t make it a good name! I wouldn’t name my child Teasel, Fuchsia, Foxglove, Cowslip, Dandelion etc etc Hmm

DeliaOwens · 04/10/2020 20:59

Do you have an Irish connection?

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mallow,Countyy_Cork

MileyWiley · 04/10/2020 20:59

Bone marrow

Calphurnia · 04/10/2020 20:53

Marlowe?
Manou?

CorianderLord · 04/10/2020 20:49

@midnightstar66 our vowels are a little different to yours here in Yorkshire but that doesn't mean they're wrong.

I also grew up saying marsh-mellow. Just what everyone says where I'm from. I quite like Mallow.

katy1213 · 04/10/2020 20:37

Kimberley biscuits was my first thought, too. Possibly future off-spring could be called Gingernut and Hobnob? Or would Bahlsen be classier and more You-nique?

MadameBlobby · 04/10/2020 20:16

@TwigTheWonderKid

Really interested to know what those who consider Mallow "not a fit name for a human" think about Rose, Iris or Olive, for example?
What does that have to do with anything?

There are plenty of names of flowers that aren’t pleasing sounding as names of people.

loops9 · 04/10/2020 20:15

Immediately thought marrow

AngelaScandal · 04/10/2020 20:07

@Anoisagusaris 😂

Votesforpedro · 04/10/2020 19:36

I think it's nice, different but nice

Beamur · 04/10/2020 19:32

There is a character called (Good Queen) Mallow in Catherynne M Valente book series (which is rather lovely).
It's unusual and has a couple of odd verbal connections (like marrow/marshmallow) but it's quite charming.
