What do you think of Evander?

We've got an Alec and a female Alex in the family so Alexander is out, which is a shame as it's about the only name I like. I just don't think there's room for another Alex. I've been looking at alternatives and came across this one. What do you think?

I prefer Evan as a name in its own right.

You could have Alexander known as Sasha or Xander.

Leander?

Nquartz · 04/10/2020 07:26

@toastofthetown

Van could also work as a nickname for Evander. More intuitive than Evan I think.
I agree. Although evan and evander are similar spelling-wise they sound completely different.

I also think of the boxer, but presumably that will be an age thing because the ear incident was in 1997

ShesMadeATwatOfMePam · 04/10/2020 07:26

Don't like it. Sounds like something out of harry potter. Xander is nicer.

TheChineseChicken · 04/10/2020 07:25

I knew a Lysander at uni. Very cool name

Allgirlskidsanddogs · 04/10/2020 07:23

Sorry I don’t like it.

I don’t think Alexander is out, how about calling him that but using Zander as his nickname? Unless Alex lives in your house too then he won’t be around her most of the time, less so as he grows up.

I have a cousin with the long version of my name (think Liz and Elizabeth) and there’s never any confusion as we are known by the different versions.

Mysa74 · 04/10/2020 07:15

I like it

Thankssomuch · 03/10/2020 22:52

I love boxing.

Tillygetsit · 03/10/2020 22:51

Good name.

biteysaurus · 03/10/2020 19:56

Absolutely love it, it's also on my shortlist

Hazelgood · 03/10/2020 19:28

I love it so much! It strikes a good balance of feeling traditional without being commonly used. For the same reason, I also like Leander, Everett and Lemuel.

lojoko · 03/10/2020 19:19

I like it.

toastofthetown · 03/10/2020 19:15

SBTLove · 03/10/2020 19:13

@Gulpingcoffee
It’s a nickname for Alexander here in Scotland, as is Alex, Sandy etc

Sunbird24 · 03/10/2020 19:13

I rather like it. Could end up with an Andy nickname if you wanted it to

ivfbeenbusy · 03/10/2020 19:09

Sorry awful

No would would ever use his full name - most likely get shortened to Evan

NiceGerbil · 03/10/2020 19:07

I thought of holyfield as well!

I quite like it op.

Gulpingcoffee · 03/10/2020 19:06

Xander is another (Scottish I think) version of Alexander. The Middle Eastern version is Iksander but you might have to be married to a Turk to get away with that one!

emmathedilemma · 03/10/2020 19:06

I wouldn't have even thought of the boxer until people mentioned it. Is it not a different sound to Evan? I'd say it as Ee-van-deer and Evan as a harder E. I agree with the suggestion of Alistair being nicer!

Okokokitsout · 03/10/2020 19:04

It just sounds made up sorry

Golfinches · 03/10/2020 18:52

Are you a big fan of the Aeneid then?

penaltytaker · 03/10/2020 18:51

I'd think he was named after the boxer

aureliacecilia · 03/10/2020 18:48

@ComicePear Ouch! I've heard of that but didn't know who was involved.

@Ohhgreat No issues with Evan - pretty neutral on it.

OP posts:
ComicePear · 03/10/2020 18:47

How about Alistair for a similar name to Alexander?

ComicePear · 03/10/2020 18:46

I also think of the boxer, and it's not a great association. He's the one who got his ear bitten off by Mike Tyson!

Ohhgreat · 03/10/2020 18:44

Do you like the nickname Evan? As that will be a common abbreviation of it.
