Morning, thoughts on my shortlist for a baby girl. I'd like something not too common and not too pretty pretty.

Vera
Alma
Thalia
Esme pr Ez-me
Carys
Beth
Fern

Thanks!

I have a young Alma, so I love it! We wanted a name that would work in different European countries (I’m not British). To me, it sounds sophisticated, serene, not frilly. It’s a super popular name in Scandinavian countries. Love Vita too!

I like Fern it's pretty but not frilly.

Love Carys

Fern or Esme would be my second choices.

Esme is such a beautiful name
I know a young Carys and love the name

Carys is my favourite from your list, lovely and fits your criteria well.
I don't mind Esme, but you'll find there are 2 pronunciations - it's pronounced Ez-may in my area.
Beth and Fern are okay.
I'm not keen on Vera and Alma. Thalia (spelt generally Talia around me) was very popular in the 1990s, so feels a bit dated to me.
I love Iris, not so keen on Hazel.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 03/10/2020 07:55

Esme
Carys
Beth and
Fern

are all lovely. Vera is pretty awful.

Tillygetsit · 02/10/2020 22:31

I really love Vera Carys and Fern. All beautiful and I couldn't pick between them.

oldladyintheshoe · 02/10/2020 21:18

Esme Smile. I have an Esme. She’s an Ez-mee. Sometimes when someone has only seen it written down they ask which way it’s pronounced. Occasionally people have guessed and used Ez-may - we just correct them. Never had any issues with people pronouncing it once they have heard her name. It was number 43 last year I believe.

Tweetypietwo · 02/10/2020 20:34

Not a fan of your shortlist, not horrible we just have different tastes! If I had to choose it would be Fern.

I love Beth and fern, esme is pretty but only ever heard it pronounced es-may, it’s also very popular. Carys is ok not keen on the others

upsidedown1987 · 02/10/2020 18:15

Thank you
Esme getting lots of good feedback. How popular do you think it is now? I think it was around 50 when I last checked, so it's not too popular?
Also love the suggestion of Hazel and Iris is beautiful too.

Byron called his daughter Ada Augusta, not Alba (she is better known today as Ada Lovelace, the maths/computer pioneer).
He called one of his out-of-wedlock daughters 'Allegra'.

Greenbook320 · 02/10/2020 16:31

Love Esme x

TommyShelby · 02/10/2020 16:06

Carys, Fern and Beth are lovely names. The others feel slightly frilly to me

JemimaTiggywinkle · 02/10/2020 16:02

What about:
Nola
Nova

Kanaloa · 02/10/2020 15:58

Carys & Esme are really nice. I’m not as keen on Vera and Alma, Beth and Fern are okay. I know a couple of Esmes, one is Ez-mee and the others are Ez-may. I think people tend to pronounce it the way you introduce yourself.

BingoGo · 02/10/2020 15:36

I like Thalia, but spelled Talia. DP Says she thinks Esme is nice.

IndiaMay · 02/10/2020 15:34

I like Alma and Fern.

I've always loved the name Alba (Byron called his daughter this).

Some other suggestions from my list: Lydia or Mallory

Doliv63 · 02/10/2020 15:32

Esme

duckoutofwater · 02/10/2020 15:29

Great list, very similar to our current thoughts.

Love Carys, Beth(an) and Fern but we had to rule out for various reasons.

Currently thinking Iris.

Also really like Hazel, Faye, Clara, Flora...

missmouse101 · 02/10/2020 15:15

Fern and Esme are the best. Carys is ok. Not keen on the others. How about Tamsin?

Twizbe · 02/10/2020 15:01

Cerys all the way.

Elizabeth is another good one. Never loads of them and not too girly.

upsidedown1987 · 02/10/2020 14:59

Thalia is great but might have some issue about how it's pronounced.
Also do you think we would have an issue with the pronunciation of Esme?

Maggie is a nice choice.

Not sure about the Tina, Natalie and Jennifer, not sure they're ready for a comeback yet?

Seems to be very mixed responses for Vera and Alma. Without the corrie connotations they sound phonetically lovely don't you think?

I also love Lois, great suggestions
Would love to hear some more opinions on my shortlist too : )

I like Thalia , its on my shortlist.

I also have Alaina and Layanna. Dp has said no to all of them but he picked the last name so screw him Wink

Firebird83 · 02/10/2020 14:33

I love Vera and Alma.
