Will I constantly get paw patrol comments with Skye ?

I live in the UK, I have never seen Paw Patrol and love the name Skye . It’s my top pick for a girl name and my husband is completely sold on it ( and he normally goes for more traditional names so that says a lot ).

I’m Canadian and although I doubt I’ll move back to Canada anytime soon ( maybe in 10-20 years ), I wasn’t sure how ‘out there’ Skye is in Canada . I like to keep my name picks to myself as my family is very judgemental, so I posted in a Canadian mum forum asking if Skye was too out there for Canada.

I got a lot of paw patrol comments . Apparently one of the main characters is called Skye .

Is that what you think of when you think of Skye ? 😳

I'm in Scotland and know 8 Sky/Skye's between 0 and 30.

1 of those was my dog and I have never heard a Paw Patrol association.

zigaziga · 04/10/2020 13:50

I would think about Paw Patrol because I’m
in that phase of my life, yes... BUT (although not my choice of name) Skye is a real name too so it’s not like Rubble or Rocky ..
I wouldn’t say it’s unusable because of Paw Patrol at all.

SumAndSubstance · 04/10/2020 13:22

I think a lot of her peers will think of Paw Patrol, but that isn't the end of the world - there's nothing wrong with Skye or Paw Patrol when you're a preschooler!

Pipandmum · 04/10/2020 13:13

I didn't get the connection at all. I'm sure my kids did watch Paw Patrol but Skye is a common enough name. Now if you name your child Meghan...

Elieza · 04/10/2020 13:10

I’d think of the Scottish island. Have a google. Really beautiful and full of history.

PinkFondantFancy · 04/10/2020 12:47

Skye is a gorgeous name. Any paw patrol association will be positive anyway. Smile

MondeoFan · 04/10/2020 12:45

I know a Skye who is about 16 now. Long before pp was on tv. I wouldn't worry use the name of you love it and know I wouldn't automatically think pp and I have a 5 year old who watches it in the mornings

ManxRhyme · 04/10/2020 12:37

I thought of Paw Patrol but seriously your DD would have the coolest name as far so her preschool peers are concerned. It's a beautiful name and there is a lot of love for Skye and her helicopter.

CherryBlossomTree7 · 04/10/2020 12:34

Love it OP. I don't think of Paw Patrol and I don't think many people would.

SunbathingDragon · 04/10/2020 11:29

I wouldn’t think of Paw Patrol but be prepared for your child to be obsessed with the programme for several years as it’s really popular.

I’d say it’s like the names Matilda or Violet (Roald Dahl), Kitty (Hello Kitty), Harry (Harry Potter) etc that they are well known as names rather than immediately as characters from books or tv.

BalanceGreen · 04/10/2020 11:25

I might think of Paw Patrol, but Skye was also an established name already, so no big deal. Different if you were naming your son Ryder ;-)

Paw Patrol is Canadian, isn't it?

midnightstar66 · 04/10/2020 11:09

You'll find most names appear in programmes at some stage. Personally I've known Skye as name long before the cartoon existed so wouldn't make that association at all. Paw patrol is aimed at toddlers/pre school so most kids that age would be thrilled to have the same name as a cool character. It will be long forgotten about by the time they are old enough to feel embarrassed

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 04/10/2020 10:58

I would assume Paw Patrol however the Skye I know also has a Marshall and a Rocky in her class Grin so that has drawn some comment.

Lockdownfatigue · 04/10/2020 10:55

Paw Patrol wouldn’t enter my head even though I have a small child who loves it. My best friend’s dd is Skye and I hadn’t made the connection.

Divebar · 02/10/2020 19:47

I have a DD who is 8 - I don’t know any kid called Skye. The nearest I can offer is a Sunshine. I think it’s pretty nice actually - by the time they’re beyond toddlerhood no one will be thinking about PP that’s for sure.

finallychangedmyusername · 02/10/2020 19:47

I live with two little Paw Patrol addicts and still I didn't make the connection initially. "Isle of" is probably my first association.

DS1 actually suggested his little brother should be named Marshall (after Paw Patrol) - now that's a strong association! Skye, not so much.

SirSamuelVimes · 02/10/2020 19:44

I would definitely think paw patrol, because I have an older child just outgrown it, and a younger child just growing into it. But it's a nice name, the character is a good one (apart from the fact she has to be dressed in bloody pink at all times to show that she's the girl Hmm) and it's a common enough name for the association to fade by the time she's older.

Sausagedog1 · 02/10/2020 19:42

I don't automatically think of Paw Patrol. It's a lovely name. Even when the connection is made it's not a bad connection!

Oneandabean · 02/10/2020 19:17

I don’t think of paw patrol but I’ve gone off it, it became very common a few years ago with people trying to be unique, it was spelt all sorts of different ways and they often had awful middle names. Example being Skye blu.

Mutabilis · 02/10/2020 12:37

Only if you ask my 3-year old paw patrol fan who adores Skye. I love the name. Her older sister loved the show a few years earlier and I'd completely forgotten the names until the next kids watched it. She'll be really popular at nursery and everyone else will just think it's a lovely name. Even if you've seen the show I think it's a familiar enough name in its own right to not just be linked to the show, 'Rubble' might be a different story!

MichelleOR84 · 02/10/2020 12:20

Awwww these are very reassuring comments . Thank you 😊

I've already said I wouldn't have thought of paw patrol but like a previous poster has alluded to.. so what even if there is a PP connection for some people. Skye in PP is amazing - the best one! It's not even a bad association to make!

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 02/10/2020 12:13

Giving away my age but it reminds me more of Neighbours.
It's a nice name though.

SingingWaffleDoggy · 02/10/2020 12:09

I think it’s a lovely name, however my no filter toddler would tell you that Skye is from Paw Patrol. That would be a positive thing though as she’s a much loved character

Flymetothestars · 02/10/2020 12:05

I wouldn't even have thought of PP to be honest.

My child had a PP phase about a year ago but went off it pretty quick. I guess another programme will have taken off by the time your baby is here anyway. You'll really regret not using your favourite name
