Three week old DD with no name!

I’m so indecisive that I still haven’t been able to decide on a name for my nearly 4 week old daughter. Her big brother is called Percy which I know is hated on here and I think that’s why I’m being extra cautious this time.

We didn’t find out the sex and I convinced myself it was going to be another boy. I found it a lot easier to find boys names I liked than girls.

My favourite name is Winifred but I am worried about name calling, mispronunciations and I am not 100% sure about the nickname Winnie. Other names we like are:

Phoebe
Heidi
Erica (this is because I wanted Eric if it was a boy)
Amber
Dorothy (although DH isn’t as keen)

However I would prefer a name that isn’t ultra popular and I know that most of the above are in the top 100. Her middle name will be Jennifer.

Any thoughts/suggestions? Thanks.

Percy and Margot are a fantastic combination. Kudos to whomever first suggested Margot.

Irishgurl · 01/10/2020 14:48

What about Theadora, shortened to Thea ?

Shutupyoutart · 01/10/2020 14:43

Oh and Amber is fab too.

Shutupyoutart · 01/10/2020 14:41

Op if you like jennifer name her Jennifer. I know someone called lydia who called her daughter that they get called big lydia and little lydia lol. Alternatively you could call her jenny or jenna. Or double barrel jennifer. jennifer-lou just an example. Out of your other names i love heidi, erica and winnie. Winifred sounds a little bit old lady ish tho.

steppemum · 01/10/2020 14:35

Don't worry OP.

My brother and SIL couldn't name their youngest, and she was registered on the very last day fo the 6 weeks, and they were STILL discussing name choices the night before.

Funny really as once she was named it was just her name and no-one could imagin her being called anything else.

zoemum2006 · 01/10/2020 14:34

@ApocalypseNowt

Margot is such a fabulous name. It reminds me of ‘the Good Life’.
Margot is just so sophisticated. She needs travel the world with a martini.

Mashingthecompost · 01/10/2020 14:30

They don't have to match either. They're siblings, not a set of dishes ;)

Mashingthecompost · 01/10/2020 14:29

Oh and ignore CatSmith - I get the intended message but it's wrapped up in utter exasperation that's unnecessary. Don't rush for a name, you'll find one. Try Nameberry, they have all kinds of lists and they suggest all sorts based on your faves - they can be a bit off the mark but it's worth looking on things like literary name lists on there as there can be some diamonds in amongst them all.

ODFOx · 01/10/2020 14:28

From your list:
Phoebe: same initial as Percy which I wouldn't like but some people do.
Dorothy: your DH doesn't like it so cross it off.
Erica and Heidi both lovely and not too popular.
Amber is a nice enough name but doesn't go with Percy imo. Very different vibe.
Winifred goes with Percy but I don't like it and couldn't tell you why.

Adding to the mix:
Freda
Harriet (Hattie)

ApocalypseNowt · 01/10/2020 14:28

Out of your list I like Amber best then Heidi.

I feel very strongly though you should call your baby Margot it's my never got to use name so I'm committed to making someone else pick it Grin

Giganticshark · 01/10/2020 14:28

@catsmith real nice way to speak to a new mother there, lay off eh! She's not failing her child ffs. MN is great for getting ideas, she's come here asking for ideas..... Carry on OP, there are some beautiful suggestions here that I'd never thought of. You have a very cool list of names

LolaGrace · 01/10/2020 14:28

Phoebe and Percy Smile

Mashingthecompost · 01/10/2020 14:25

I just want to say that, although it's a really popular name for people my age Jennifer will still be one of my favourite names. I knew a few in my year at school and all were lovely, it's got such warm associations for me. I also knew a Genna who was a lovely happy person, she had a forgiving nature and a great laugh, and was confident in her tastes and choices too. Like Heidi and Erica, and Amber reminds me of an old friend's little sister who would squeal with delight whenever I dropped by. I also like

Lisa
Tori
Sanna
Louisa
Mira
Kezia

These might not be what you're after but sometimes they can spark something else.

@CatSmith

I hate all your name choices, but that doesn’t matter because it’s not me naming your child.

I really do not understand the mentality of someone asking strangers to help name their child.

You must know what girls names you like! If you have had ten months and still can’t name your child, maybe parenting isn’t for you!

Sorry, I know I come across as harsh and bitchy, but it’s your child, you find her a name, not me and not anyone else. Name her after your granny, or your husbands great gran, but you seriously can’t expect Mumsnet to name her! Honestly, you’re letting your daughter down at literally the first hurdle.

Are you new to Mumsnet? People are always asking for opinions on their name choices. Thanks for making me feel even shittier than I already do at not having decided on a name!

You know it doesn't matter where a name comes on a list if you like it use it, every child is individual even if they are 1 of 5 in a classroom

Thank you everyone. The general consensus is to go for Heidi. I don’t know why it bothers me that it’s a name in the top 100 but I feel like I should ‘play it safe’ this time with a name that is more popular!

daisypond · 01/10/2020 14:16

Dorothy goes the best. But if your DH isn’t keen, rule it out.
Erica is a great name. It’s my favourite. But maybe not with Jennifer.
Phoebe is fine.
Heidi and Amber don’t go alongside Percy at all. Very different style of names.

Dorothea?
Frieda? Doesn’t really go with Jennifer.
Margaret? Shortened to Maggie or Peggy etc.
Marjorie?

moose62 · 01/10/2020 14:08

Heidi Jennifer is nice or Dulcie Jennifer or Darcy Jennifer.

midsummabreak · 01/10/2020 14:02

BigFatLiar · 01/10/2020 14:01
