Name with surname?

Can you give me some help with names that go well with our surname? Appreciate they will mostly go by their first name but I find our surname so hard to pair well with. Ideally nothing too popular. Surname is Cutting, would be grateful for suggestions for boys and girls 😘 xxx

Felicity works really well, imo.

Unfortunately our branch of Cuttings is withering out, and there haven't been any babies for many a year. All my Dad's generation had girls, so, there's not many left. The names we have are all going to be in the 'bit unfashionable' zone.
As an aside, did you know there were a number of Cuttings who died in the biggest RNLI disaster? It's a fascinating story and there are memorials at Rye and a beautiful stained glass window in Winchelsea.

Thekitchensinkk · 01/10/2020 08:00

@CoddledAsAMommet I don't mind Robert, just don't love it. It still feels quite dated to me. Do you have any other suggestions? I find it really hard to paid with :/

'E needs is 'ead cutting off
type jokes

Thekitchensinkk · 01/10/2020 07:40

@Tillygetsit yeah I suppose it does actually! We wouldn't encourage teddy, it's not our fave shortening. But then again, Ed Cutting? "Head cutting"????

OP posts:
Tillygetsit · 30/09/2020 23:05

I agree that Polly Cutting sounds really sparky and fun.
Edward is good as long as you dont shorten it to Teddy. Sounds a bit violent!

GU24Mum · 30/09/2020 21:59

Let me know - my English teacher at secondary school was Mrs Cutting!

Thekitchensinkk · 30/09/2020 21:52

@GU24Mum I'll have to ask DH!

Roseaugusta, why do you suggest Paul? (Wondering if you know a relative!)

CoddledAsAMommet · 30/09/2020 20:26

Cutting was my maiden name! A fabulous name, too, with lots and lots of lovely relatives. I dont think it's a tricky name; as long as you don't use 'Railway' or 'Key' you'll be fine. Maybe stay away from Diamond, too!
May I suggest Robert? If you used that you'd make my heart sing xx

GU24Mum · 30/09/2020 20:21

OP, you don't have an oldish relative who used to be an English teacher do you?!

NataliaOsipova · 30/09/2020 20:20

Dominic Cutting is a bit too close to the dark lord for my liking

My thoughts too! Grin

Thekitchensinkk · 30/09/2020 20:20

@MikeUniformMike that's a lovely association. I too like Lara which is better with Cutting

OP posts:
roseaugusta · 30/09/2020 20:18

Paul :-)

MikeUniformMike · 30/09/2020 20:14

I'd imagine a Polly as someone intelligent and level-headed, sort of the same as a Harriet.

I really don't like Clara or Felicity. Clara because of the Cl bit - I like Cara and Lara - and Felicity is too long.

Thekitchensinkk · 30/09/2020 20:06

@MikeUniformMike I'm glad you don't think it's too cute. I'll definitely consider.

@Squeakerfoot I think you're right there, I don't mind the longer names ending in C sound with Cutting...

@sorryforswearing my favourites at the moment are Felicity and Clara for girls (don't know if they go) and Edward is my favourite for a boy. I'm struggling to think of names that go with the surname well and don't sound like a sentence i.e Rose Cutting or Ash Cutting etc.

Squeakerfoot · 30/09/2020 19:58

@shesgonebatshitagain Ah yes, you're right. Don't use that!

@Thekitchensinkk I like the c/ck sound at the end, but not with a one syllable name like Jack. It doesn't blend for me when the first name is more substantial. It's actually easier to say. However maybe it blends too much in other accents?

sorryforswearing · 30/09/2020 19:50

What are your favourite names OP?

MikeUniformMike · 30/09/2020 19:49

Avoid a nature type name. Rose Cutting or Willow Cutting sounds like something you'd find in the Gardening threads.

IslandLulu · 30/09/2020 19:48

Susannah Cutting
Siobhan Cutting
Cecily Cutting
Elizabeth Cutting
Julia Cutting

Daniel Cutting
Julian Cutting
Xavier Cutting
Montgomery Cutting
Christian Cutting

MikeUniformMike · 30/09/2020 19:45

The c/ck ending runs into the surname. Dominic Cutting sounds like Dominic Utting.

Polly isn't cutesie at all. Polydora sounds like a girl named after a record label and Pollyanna too twee.

I really like Polly as a name - it's a bit more sassy than Holly and Mollie.

shesgonebatshitagain · 30/09/2020 19:41

Rupert and Vivienne both sound really rather charming with your surname

I also like

Leonie
Martha
Philippa
Joanna
Astrid
Monica
Suzanna

Florian
Sebastian
Oliver
Gareth
Lloyd

shesgonebatshitagain · 30/09/2020 19:36

@Squeakerfoot

I also think it suits a name on the more substantial side.

Dominic Cutting
Frederick Cutting
Patrick Cutting
Emerick Cutting
Alistair Cutting
Alexander Cutting

Abigail Cutting
Susannah Cutting
Marian Cutting
Elizabeth Cutting
Rosalind Cutting
Anoushka Cutting

Dominic Cutting is a bit too close to the dark lord for my liking

@Angelmonkey imagine I'm linked! Ha!

I was at school with twins whose surname was cutting. Their names were Marissa and Miranda, siblings called Avril and Christopher
