Alexis/Aurora OR Ares/August

We've decided to stick to an 'A' theme (I have a 1-year-old named Atticus) and have narrowed it down to:

Alexis or Aurora for a girl Flowers and Ares or August for a boy Football

What do you think of these names? Happy to hear more suggestions for 'A' names too Smile

Girl: I prefer Alexis, but I'm not keen on the similarity of Atticus and Alexis, so would choose Aurora.

Boy: I much prefer August, and don't like Ares, however I don't like Atticus and August for siblings. Sounds too close to me.

Aurora is a name that looks pretty but doesn't sound very nice. She will be Owowa or Ovova to some people. Oriana is prettier sounding.

missmouse101 · 01/10/2020 08:32

Alexis is lovely. August is nice. Aurora (roar roar roar) is terrible and Ares is a no from me.

MikeUniformMike · 01/10/2020 08:26

WellQual
That is a very harsh opinion.
I know twins with very similar names and they were fine.

WellQualifiedToRepresentTheLBC · 01/10/2020 04:40

It seems deeply unclever to have the same initials. That way madness lies for post, appointments, etc.

Alexis is a Greek boys' name to me, so Aurora. It seems bizarre to name a child after the personification of war, so August.

Ghosts2020 · 01/10/2020 01:40

None sorry, but as above said if August were for a girl then yes

TartanDMs · 01/10/2020 00:49

Alexis by a country mile. I like Aurora but Alexis sounds sassy and full of character.

Not keen on either Ares or August. Augustus isn't too bad as an alternative but I think Ares would be changed to Arse at school and you would have to be robust to pull it off. Shame, because it sounds nice.

Rubybluesy · 01/10/2020 00:44

Why choose names starting with the same letter
August is the name of a month

Kanaloa · 01/10/2020 00:43

Alexis & August are the nicest I think. I don’t mind Aurora, don’t like Ares.

Ellmau · 01/10/2020 00:30

Aurora is lovely.

Alexis is unisex, and I prefer to your boys' choices.

Giganticshark · 30/09/2020 17:16

Andrew, Austin, Allen, Adam, adonis (jk).

Arabella, anastasia, athena

user1493494961 · 30/09/2020 16:21

Augustus is nice, as long ad you don't end up with Cus and Gus.

user1493494961 · 30/09/2020 16:18

Prefer Augustus.

Peachbubble · 30/09/2020 15:50

Aurora or August

Hazelgood · 30/09/2020 15:16

I have a little boy called August, who goes by Gus. Augustus is a fabulous name, but August felt more contemporary.

I like both of your girl names - sorry, not a lot of help really!

Garcellesaidwhaaat · 30/09/2020 14:19

Alexis is lovely but I instantly think of Amazon Alexa and Lexie. I like Aurora but its now quite popular. Alexandra?
August out of the boy names...it's definitely become a unisex name but I think I prefer it as a boys name. Girls have April, May and June.

Saisong · 30/09/2020 14:09

The same initial can make things a little difficult with post/appointments etc.

However I like Augustus. Ares not so much because of the spelling issue with Arse. Another name I like is Ames, also Arlo (though that is becoming popular)

Not so keen on either girl name. Though I like Aurora, but it seems to have become incredibly popular (around here at least). Another I like is Annis which is apparently an old form of Agnes.

daisypond · 30/09/2020 14:01

Alexis. I really dislike Aurora. But it is commonly a boy’s name in East Europe. How about Alix? That is a girl’s name.

Not keen on Ares - god of war. No one will know how to pronounce it. August is better. Augustus is a hard one to pull off, but Gus is good.

Squeakerfoot · 30/09/2020 14:01

I love Alexis for girls and boys. It's not too used nowadays and makes me think of someone spirited and creative.

MyShinyWhiteTeeth · 30/09/2020 12:18

Alexis is more typical for a boy's name in some countries so there could be some confusion - by Greeks in particular.

I like Aurora but what will it be shortened to?

How is Ares pronounced. There might be some confusion.

I think they will get the acronym? jokes quite a bit but I like the name.

How do they sound with the middle and surname?

Mish85 · 30/09/2020 12:09

Ari , Ambrose, Anders and Archer some fav boy A names for me. Love Aurora ❤️

perfumeistooexpensive · 30/09/2020 12:01

Aurora is a name I really dislike. Unless the child is very cute and girly, it's dreadful. It's a mouthful too and not great in adult life. Alexis is fine, as long as you want a name that's for both sexes. I like Augustus, but not August. Ares is a big fat no.

SleepingStandingUp · 30/09/2020 11:40

Alexis or Aurora for a girl is avoid anything that's like Alexa tbh. Maybe Lexie?
Love Aurora tho.

Ares or August for a boy
Not the arse anagram. Not keen on August, Augustus is better.

If you have two girls you'll spend so lung getting mail for
Miss A. Tinsel
and not knowing who it's for

bridgetreilly · 30/09/2020 11:36

Aurora by far. And Augustine, rather than either of your options.

Wanderer1 · 30/09/2020 11:28

I like Alexis but prefer it for a boy, but then the only Alexis is know in real life is male
