David: lovely or awful?

I really like David for DS2 right now, and so does DH to my surprise, particularly because it matches perfectly with Samuel (DS1) IMO; the whole story in the bible about him anointing David. So is it lovely and thus we go for it, or is it just my hormones playing up?

David - yes
Dave - no

You will be fighting that uphill battle for the next 18 years Grin

MercyBodle · 28/09/2020 00:46

I really like it.

gokartdillydilly · 28/09/2020 00:31

Samuel anointing his brother David in the Bible? How on earth is this a good thing? But like the other PP say, if you like it, it's your choice Confused

MsEllany · 27/09/2020 23:45

I like it. Couple of David's at school with my boys so not unpopular.

lunalulu · 27/09/2020 23:37

I'm afraid am not that keen. But all names are to di with associations and it feels good for you 👌🙂

AlwaysLatte · 27/09/2020 23:36

I love it but I hate the abbreviation!

SenorFrog · 27/09/2020 23:36

Ooo sorry, ignore my little rant there. Lol

SenorFrog · 27/09/2020 23:36

Ds is 19, he has two close friends called David. One is Dave, the other is David.

I like it but it's ruined as my ex is David, abusive wanker that he was, nothing to do with his name though, he'd have been an abusive wanker no matter what his name was.

joystir59 · 27/09/2020 23:30

David is beautiful

Tootletum · 27/09/2020 23:30

I like innocuous classic names. Also like the bible stories of David. It's also good to think that if he has an international career, everyone can pronounce it. Not the case with Richard for example, which Asian languages struggle with.

Tillygetsit · 27/09/2020 23:26

My brother has always been David not Dave and he's 34. It's a good classic solid name.

crimsonlake · 27/09/2020 23:18

I have a grown up David and oddly enough pre the Royles I used to sign cards... baby David,. I also have an Andrew with the intention of shortening it to Andy. It never occurred to me that family names should match as a poster on here mentioned.

Firebird83 · 27/09/2020 23:06

Definitely due a comeback. Davey is a cute nn.

Charleyhorses · 27/09/2020 22:50

I have a nephew David. Never been called Dave. He is David or Dee.

BIankets · 27/09/2020 22:46

I like it... but not with a brother named Samuel.

Sorry 🙁

Sara2000 · 27/09/2020 22:44

Lovely name. Not so keen on Dave.

Aquamarine1029 · 27/09/2020 22:43

Hate it. Really hate Dave. Such boring, ineffectual name.

itsjakeandamy · 27/09/2020 22:42

I'm not a fan. But I know lots of Davids who are never Dave so it certainly isn't a given that it will be shortened.

paintmywholehousepink · 27/09/2020 22:41

Baby Dave.

Kanaloa · 27/09/2020 22:41

It’s quite dated but I don’t mind it. I don’t think it’s as timeless as Samuel for some reason though. I would put Samuel in the same category as Joseph, William, Thomas. David seems to fit more with Darren, Kevin and Gary. Maybe that’s just because I went to school with lots of boys with those names though! If you like it, it’s an inoffensive name which is nice enough.

Bupkis · 27/09/2020 22:40

How could it ever be awful?!

3ormorecharacters · 27/09/2020 22:37

Should add that neither of my family members named David or the boys I have taught have ever been Daves - always David.

movingonup20 · 27/09/2020 22:36

Classic, I know several, done shorten some do not

3ormorecharacters · 27/09/2020 22:36

I wouldn't use it as I have some odd family members with the name, but I love the Biblical connotations and it's a good classic name. As a primary school teacher I didn't come across is at all for 7 or so years but now have taught two in the last two years (though neither from English families).

SlopesOff · 27/09/2020 22:35

I love it.
My brother was called David.

As a baby he could be Davey, not keen on Dave but I was taught as a child was to always ignore anyone that changed or shortened my name. It worked. Tell them once, then ignore until they use the full version.
