Enola for DD?

scarletm · 27/09/2020 18:56

me and DH watched Enola Holmes recently with his nieces and would love the same name for DD. We do thinks it's a little different though! Any thoughts??

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

@Onceuponatimethen

You're quite opinionated, and not in a good way

Onceuponatimethen · 28/09/2020 18:15

@ScarMatty you said you didn’t know about Hiroshima.

Literally can’t think of one adult I personally think of as being well educated who wouldn’t know what Hiroshima involved.

If you think that’s equivalent to just not remembering the name of the plane then that is sad in itself.

AlexaShutUp · 28/09/2020 18:13

I'm not sure how knowing the name of a plane could significantly impact my decisions in life...

I'm not talking about the name of the plane. In fact, I haven't commented on the fact that many people apparently don't know the name Enola Gay. I'm not particularly surprised about that tbh, nor am I particularly bothered. What I am surprised and bothered about is that people have never heard about what happened in Hiroshima.

EvilPea · 28/09/2020 18:07

@Westfacing

I vaguely know a nuclear bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. But that’s pretty much it

Vaguely? Did you never think to look a little further?

Do you know about the Holocaust, vaguely, just a little bit?

No I haven’t. Hasn’t even occurred to me to. Doesn’t make me a bad person for not knowing about it, life as an adult is very busy.

The Holocaust I know a lot about, the planes and British side I’ve learnt a lot about from museums, growing up in a Jewish area with Jewish friends and grandparents who lived through the war.

But no I haven’t ever sat down and googled about it, read a book about it or watched a film about it. I did watch when the wind blows when I was young (probably far too young) which is where my nuclear bomb knowledge pretty much starts and stopped.

Neither was it taught about it in my school but I knew about it as did most people; Hiroshima Day is August 6th every year. There was also Nagasaki.

CatRamsey I definitely feel this is society's failing, not yours.

I'm really sorry if anything here is upsetting you. Flowers

AlexaShutUp · 28/09/2020 17:42

I mean that's just mean, in my book

I'm sorry if it came across that way, it was not intended to. My point was that the school system is clearly failing people.

AlexaShutUp · 28/09/2020 17:38

If you feel like having a go at someone how about the two posters (I think) who have said Hiroshima wasn't an atrocity etc.

I'm not having a go at anyone, but I have already responded to those posts above.

NiceGerbil · 28/09/2020 17:36

'That reflects on our education system as much as it does on you personally.'

MadameBlobby · 28/09/2020 17:35

@MsTSwift

Struggling to think of a name with worse connotations tbh. Myra?
Adolf?
NiceGerbil · 28/09/2020 17:35

Alexa this is a baby names post.

Saying people should expect cut and thrust on this board is a bit strong.

Cut her some slack.

It's not a personal failing. A lot of people don't know a lot of stuff about a lot of stuff. Because not everyone can know everything.

If you feel like having a go at someone how about the two posters (I think) who have said Hiroshima wasn't an atrocity etc.

Someone was asking about Myra a few weeks ago....

CatRamsey, nobody is saying that you're an awful human being at all, they are merely expressing great surprise that there are adults who don't know about major historical events of this nature. That reflects on our education system as much as it does on you personally.

I'm really sorry to hear that you're feeling suicidal, but to be fair, nobody could have known this. People tend to be fairly forthright on these boards, so MN might not be the right place for you right now if you're feeling fragile. Or maybe you should just stick to the support threads? Do you have access to support in real life? If not, is there someone you can talk to - a friend, family member or your GP? Even the Samaritans?

MadameBlobby · 28/09/2020 17:16

Enola Gay would put me off for sure. Not a good association.

RuthW · 28/09/2020 17:14

Wow I really enjoyed that OMD fix. Thanks.

CatRamsey · 28/09/2020 17:12

Wow, I had no idea not knowing something made me such an awful human being. I can't help that I've never come across it in my life before.

I am actively suicidal and these comments really aren't helping.

EvilPea · 28/09/2020 17:09

@AlexaShutUp

I’m 40 and it wasn’t taught in my school

But presumably, you have learned about it outside of school?

Not the plane name or anything like that. I vaguely know a nuclear bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. But that’s pretty much it. I am someone who goes to plane museums which normally cover the British side of ww2 and we are big horrible history fans in this house.

I had grandparents who lived through world war 2 and they were alive when I was, I did talk to them a lot about it. But that side of it, never came up.

It’s a little like questions on mastermind, they are easy if you know the answers. Common knowledge isn’t common for everyone

@SleepingStandingUp

I'm 38, no idea what Ebola Gay is but how can anyone not have heard of Hiroshima? I remember going to an art gallery with lots of art themed around it and I have a book, a young yeen book, about it. It must have been covered in school hence the trip to the art gallery. Have they really stopped teaching it??

giletrouge · 28/09/2020 16:50

I am so rarely shocked but it's true that anyone adult not knowing about Hiroshima has really floored me. The world would hardly make sense - it is much, much more defining of us all than 9/11.

MrsAvocet · 28/09/2020 16:36

I'm mildly surprised that so many people are unaware of the name of the plane but really shocked that anyone wouldn't know at least the basic facts of what happened in Hiroshima. It is only a few months since the 75th anniversary of the end of WW2 and the media, of all types, was full of information on the subject. How did anyone miss that?

AlexaShutUp · 28/09/2020 16:34

You don't have to have been taught it at school but surely people have heard of nuclear bombs and the two times they have been used?

It does show a remarkable lack of basic general knowledge. I can't quite get my head around it.
