me and DH watched Enola Holmes recently with his nieces and would love the same name for DD. We do thinks it's a little different though! Any thoughts??

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I've just asked ds who is 19 and he knows what Enola Gay is but he's doing history A Level. I do laugh at young people who dismiss something because their generation don't know much about it, like the child won't share the world with their grandparents generation; I know what connotations Enola has and I'll be around for another 40 or so years. One thing is for certain, any child born now called Enola, they absolutely will be told of the link and will also be bloody sick of that song by the time they're an adult.

SleepingStandingUp · 28/09/2020 00:08

Sorry, can't get past Ebola.

anola?

CorianderLord · 28/09/2020 00:04

@AltogetherAndrews

I did history to A-Level and Enola Gay is not taught in schools anymore. The war is but japan is a strangely empty gap not much discussed. The name of the plane certainly isn't taught.

CorianderLord · 27/09/2020 23:58

Although I'm 25 and have never heard Ebola Gay either

CorianderLord · 27/09/2020 23:56

Why would you name your child Alone?

lunalulu · 27/09/2020 23:49

Makes me think of Ebola sorry

CandyLeBonBon · 27/09/2020 23:35

Bloody loved that tune. My favourite Omd track.

Gigglr · 27/09/2020 23:34

Not Nola either as it's what people call New Orleans. She would be forever asked by any Americans why she was named after the city

I remember the lyrics like it was yesterday. I'm singing it's 6:15 though not 8.15, am I wrong?

NiceGerbil · 27/09/2020 23:16

TBF I grew up at the tail end of the cold war and i didn't know that was the name of the plane. We weren't taught it in school and I think I was a little young for the song- I vaguely remember it on TOTP but age 6 in 1980 hearing it was as far as it went.

I don't think it's fair to say it's weird people don't know the name of the plane.

But once you know, it's a name you won't forget.

'Remember this was an American victory, and for many was what ended the war. It's not universally seen as an atrocity'

Well wow. You do you.

Dropping a nuclear weapon under any circs is a massive fucking atrocity. It's just. A different thing entirely. Due to the power, scale, and long lasting effects of radiation.

canigohomenow · 27/09/2020 23:12

It's a lovely name but unfortunately, the connotations make it not so.

It's like Isis, nice name but you just wouldn't.

A plane called Enola obliterated the lives of millions - I'm usually one for always saying if you like it go with it, but in this case... keep looking OP.

On a side note, I watched the film yesterday and it was fantastic!

Twixes · 27/09/2020 23:06

I'm shocked that people have not heard of Enola Gay.

And I'm laughing at the useless Helga/Dublin bombing comparison, as if the first atomic bomb is in anyway equivalent! (and I'm Irish!)

Don't use the name OP, it would be an affliction on the poor child.

catsvdogs · 27/09/2020 23:01

I like it.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 27/09/2020 23:01

@BikeRunSki

I was just watching the film with dd and was thinking it was a rather nice name. Fantastic character too, but the Hiroshima connection is not great.
That's what I thought.

Hiroshima was the first thing that came into my mind when I saw the film title.

snidgetowl · 27/09/2020 23:01

I'm 27 and I was definitely taught the name of the plane at school when studying history GCSE. I can't hear the name without thinking about it, so would have to give it a no based on that.

WhenAWrenVisits · 27/09/2020 22:57

No. I rarely feel this strongly about a name. Please don’t use it.

How about Nola?

PyongyangKipperbang · 27/09/2020 22:54

THe lyrics are so haunting..

Enola Gay, you should have stayed at home yesterday
We got your message on the radio, conditions normal and you're coming home

These games you play, they're gonna end in more than tears someday
Uh huh Enola Gay, it shouldn't ever have to end this way

It's 8:15, that's the time that it's always been
We got your message on the radio, conditions normal and you're coming home

Enola Gay, is mother proud of little boy today
Uh huh, this kiss you give, it's never ever gonna fade away

Shelby30 · 27/09/2020 22:52

No! I though it said Ebola too.

Bobbiepin · 27/09/2020 22:50

Maybe Eniola? More well known, no Hiroshima association but not too commonly used.

Ifonlyicouldliveinmypjs · 27/09/2020 22:49

Absolutely not - it’s not a bad name and I quite like the Anola suggestion but the connection to Enola Gay will undoubtedly be made if you spell it with an E.

For everyone saying it’s not something taught in school, I assure you that it absolutely is. Im a history teacher and have taught the dropping of the atom bomb to hundreds, if not thousands of teenagers over the last 15 years as part of the year 9 curriculum. In my experience it is one of those topics which students are fascinated by and remember the details about. The name of the plane was always something that came up in the teaching and I would be surprised if the majority of the students I taught, didn’t recognise the name if they heard it - even if they forgot 90% of the other stuff I taught them!!

theconstantinoplegardener · 27/09/2020 22:47

How about Iola OP? It has a similar sound and vibe, but doesn't have the same negative connotations.

Mumisnotmyonlyname · 27/09/2020 22:47

Grim.

Prettybluepigeons · 27/09/2020 22:46

Enola gay

You just can't!!!

tenlittlecygnets · 27/09/2020 22:46

Enola Gay? No. Google it.

Theradioison · 27/09/2020 22:45

It was an extraordinarily song too, haunting
