Give it to me straight

So we have had a long hard road to become pregnant and I would love a name which in some way reflects how much joy we feel to have this baby. I've been looking at names which mean happiness, light, love, hope etc.

One name I've come across for a girl and I LOVE is Bliss. I once knew someone who was called Bliss and I thought it was such a cool name, she really suited it.

But I don't know if I'm brave enough! So, Mumsnet, give it to me straight. Is it lovely or awful?

For some reason the word Bliss makes me think of products aimed at women eg gadgets for hair removal.

Or maybe it's Babyliss I'm thinking of?!

I just feel like it's a shaver or maybe a girls' magazine. Sorry!

DramaAlpaca · 17/09/2020 23:16

No, it's not good. Sorry.

LadyGAgain · 17/09/2020 23:11

Wasn't Bliss a teen mag in the 90's?
I'm not keen.
How about starting with names you like rather than trying to find names that mean something you're trying to express? She will always mean those things regardless. She's precious!

reallylovely · 17/09/2020 23:00

I know a Bliss and she has never been picked on because of her name, it's a beautiful name and really suits her

AntiHop · 17/09/2020 23:00

I wouldn't.

ColdCottage · 17/09/2020 22:58

No, sorry.

FiveFootTwoEyesOfBlue · 17/09/2020 22:54

Call her Hope.

God knows we all need some of that in our lives.

Bliss starts to sound short for blister the more i say it. Also the charity for babies as others have said. Middle name maybe. If you like it, maybe think about you'd feel introducing yourself everywhere you go as bliss. Faith, hope, joy, there are loads of words that are actually names to choose from.

jemimafuddleduck · 17/09/2020 22:42

Thanks all, again I appreciate and am taking on board all this feedback! I really dislike Blythe although I'm not really sure why. A bit too old fashioned for me (although I don't mind a lot of traditional names).

Panti Bliss is a prominent Irish drag queen, which I can’t get beyond. Also, it sounds vaguely like a brand of scented sanitary towel.

Blythe is nice.

AriesTheRam · 17/09/2020 22:36

I really like it

ramarama · 17/09/2020 22:33

Is it not kind of unfair to name a child so obviously after a feeling? What if she turns out to be overly shy, quiet, retiring type? Something a bit less blatant like Blythe might be better?
Congratulations anyway!
Ps I love Miriam too, and have not met a single one yet through five years of baby classes/nursery/school....

TenDays · 17/09/2020 22:32

Family names are often a good idea if Grampies are not called Horace or Lucretia.* I'd go with that and the Bliss nickname idea.

One of my children has been known in the immediate family all her life by a nickname. It works well.

*Grasping for names there, no offence intended.

greenemerald · 17/09/2020 22:27

I did think of the charity as PP noted but that's because I had a preemie in NICU. Vast majority of people won't make this connection though!

Nosnogginginthekitchen · 17/09/2020 22:25

What about Blythe ?
Means joyful and happy, similar pattern to Bliss (beginning letters, length), unusual but doesn't have sexual connotations which is what came to my mind about Bliss (probably says more about me than the name, but there you go)

Auto · 17/09/2020 22:25

I like the sentiment but not the name Bliss. It would be hard to live up to as well. Why not keep it as a nickname but not a formal name?

Allegra and Larissa both mean 'cheerful' apparently Smile

BalloonSlayer · 17/09/2020 22:23

It's nice and a lovely sentiment but unfortunately one of those names that people would tell an amusing anecdote about : "I saw a toddler having the worst tantrum ever, the poor Mum was absolutely mortified, close to tears (we've all been there) then she said, 'please get off the floor, Bliss,' haha"

OrchidFlakes · 17/09/2020 22:23

Bliss isn’t to my taste but what about Blythe?

peakotter · 17/09/2020 22:22

I thought the charity too. I would assume a sick or prem baby.

user1493494961 · 17/09/2020 22:18

Sorry, but it's awful, although I do like the chocolate bars.

Tillygetsit · 17/09/2020 22:17

Something like Abigail (father's joy) Bliss would be lovely. It makes a great mn.

itssquidstella · 17/09/2020 22:14

What about Blythe?

GreenJellyBean · 17/09/2020 22:14

I love the reason you’d want to use it but personally don’t like it as a name. As someone else has said, if you feel the need to be brave about it you might leave yourself open to regretting it afterwards.

Just throwing this out there - Amora Is beautiful and means love Smile

jemimafuddleduck · 17/09/2020 22:12

I didn't know about the charity, that's a good point. But then again others might not either. I definitely don't like it with an e on the end.
Thanks for the other suggestions, much appreciated.
I don't THINK we'll end up using it, but it's been really helpful to get feedback. Do still love it though!

changeuser · 17/09/2020 22:09

Adding an additional e on the end doesn’t improve things. It’s not a good name IMO, obviously.
