Give it to me straight

So we have had a long hard road to become pregnant and I would love a name which in some way reflects how much joy we feel to have this baby. I've been looking at names which mean happiness, light, love, hope etc.

One name I've come across for a girl and I LOVE is Bliss. I once knew someone who was called Bliss and I thought it was such a cool name, she really suited it.

But I don't know if I'm brave enough! So, Mumsnet, give it to me straight. Is it lovely or awful?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Namaste6 · 18/09/2020 08:45

Not sure OP. Whilst it sounds lovely my mind went straight to the charity. Sorry.

NataliaOsipova · 18/09/2020 07:46

I wouldn’t. Apart from anything else, she’s likely to go through life being asked “what’s that short for?”, or “what’s your real name?”.

I say go with what you like. People in your circle will love your child and they will learn to love any name the baby carries. Here are some more suggestions that mean happy if you’re wavering over Bliss.

The meaning of the name Elysia is blissful. Maybe could stretch to nickname Bliss?

Shedpaint · 18/09/2020 07:16

I met a little girl called Joy recently and I thought how beautiful it was. She was a delight too which made her name seem all the more perfect for her.

Timetochoose123 · 18/09/2020 06:57
  • went with my heart.
Lulu1919 · 18/09/2020 06:57

There's a yogurt called Bliss ...
Your child
Your choice
Not a great fan myself

Timetochoose123 · 18/09/2020 06:56

Go for it, it's beautiful and meaningful to you and that's all
that matters. I think it's lovely. I went for a name that was slightly out of my comfort zone, knowing full well it wouldn't be most peoples cup of tea. It suits my DC perfectly and years later I'm still so so glad I went e we otherwise my heart.

ShesMadeATwatOfMePam · 18/09/2020 06:45

Felicity is nice. Or felicia. Fliss for short? They mean happiness.

Smileandtheworldsmileswithyou · 18/09/2020 05:31

Oh no, don't call your daughter Bliss, that could be really hard at school. Use it as a middle name if you love it.

IHateCoronavirus · 18/09/2020 05:07

Congratulation on your baby op Bear

Alina is a Greek name meaning ‘light’ how about Alina Bliss Surname? That way you still have the Bliss that you love?

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 18/09/2020 05:05

Faith
Hope
Joy

midnightstar66 · 18/09/2020 05:01

It sounds really wishy washy to me. My dd gets called blizz as a nickname for Izzie,Bliss could be the equivalent nickname if it was based on Isabella instead?!

CJsGoldfish · 18/09/2020 04:06

Blisse is actually a name

So? In the context of this post, adding an 'e' on the end does fuck all to change anything 🙄

Unless I'm missing what adding a letter brings to the table 🤷‍♀️

Krazynights34 · 18/09/2020 01:28

Blisse is actually a name 🙄

CJsGoldfish · 18/09/2020 00:49

Or do another spelling Blisse for instance
WTF? 🤣🤣🤣

I'm mildly uncomfortable with a name to reflect YOUR feelings. Such potential to not end so well. And kinda unfair at the same time.

I don't think it's a particularly nice name regardless of reason.

dollypartonscoat · 18/09/2020 00:41

I know someone called Cherish and although I'm very traditional with names, she suits it

FenellaVelour · 18/09/2020 00:08

Bliss makes me think of a lubricant or sex toy. Sorry OP, maybe it’s my filthy mind, but I just can’t imagine having this as a name.

BlueJag · 17/09/2020 23:56

Amada ( loved one in Spanish) could be nice.
There was a writer called Amado Nervo.
Comes from the verb Amar (To Love)

MJMG2015 · 17/09/2020 23:51

@FizzingWhizzbee123

Personally I don’t like it, but then I’ve never really liked the word bliss anyway. Too close to blister!

However I don’t see why you can’t use it if you like it. There plenty of women called Precious, Blessing, Joy, Mercy, Patience etc, so why not Bliss.

Yes, there are and I think they are clingy too!!
SemperIdem · 17/09/2020 23:51

Bliss is...not great.

MJMG2015 · 17/09/2020 23:50

🎉Congratulations!!! 🧸

I am SO happy for you and because you LOVE it, I want to love it, but I really don't.

My honest reaction is to roll my eyes, a lot. To me it's the equivalent of calling her 'perfection' or 'amazing'. (Which, obviously she will be, but it's not a great name) sorry.

TenShortStories · 17/09/2020 23:49

How about just using Joy?

Felicity means 'happiness'; people called Felicity are often known as 'Fliss'. I think it is a lovely name for a girl.

Asher and Felix for a boy also mean happiness, good fortune.
