Thinking of using Sonny (in our top three names), what do you think of it? Middle name Joseph.

Tillygetsit · 16/09/2020 22:54

I really don't like it, especially for an adult. I know one who is 15 and insists on being called by his middle name.

wuickquestion · 16/09/2020 21:33

I don't mind it. I'm not keen on nickname names, but as it's really fashionable to have ie / y type names. I think Sonny is nice one, bit unusual. I've only met one ever.

I quite like the name Saul if you like S names.

SeigneurLapindeGrantham · 16/09/2020 21:03

I love the name Sonny and I heard it live for the first time when I heard Paul Simon singing The Obvious Child in concert in 1991.

WiserOlder · 16/09/2020 20:54

Sunny as a nick name for Sean or ..........(this is challenging)

WiserOlder · 16/09/2020 20:54

I like Sunny but Sonny is an insult. "'listen sonny, I have trousers older than you so don't tell me I can't wait here''. Ykwim.

AllPlayedOut · 16/09/2020 19:37

It's awful. It's hard to imagine it on a grown man and bad enough on a baby.

Thisismytimetoshine · 16/09/2020 19:37

It's a diminutive, basically the equivalent of Junior. Give the kid a name of his own.

WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat · 16/09/2020 19:26

@itsjakeandamy

I know what you mean, I worked where there was a Mr Disposition and he was a right ogre, we never knew was his first name was but I can't believe it was Sunny! Wink

WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat · 16/09/2020 19:21

@Mozzereena

Agreed but the occasional rainy day at the height of summer can smell really nice.

Spied · 16/09/2020 19:21

I like it. It's a bit different but not too much.
I think it suits all ages too and is quite cool.
Am sure most boys/men would rather be called Sonny than some of the more traditionalHmm names doing the rounds today.

Mozzereena · 16/09/2020 19:17

I like it but I actually prefer Sunny

DramaAlpaca · 16/09/2020 19:15

No, it's not good.

Whatsyourflava · 16/09/2020 19:14

I personally love this name.
I've got a family member who nearly used it for her son but was put off using because she saw some criticism online. still regrets not using it and her son is 4 now!

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 16/09/2020 17:55

Solomon nn Solly?

I think Sonny is tricky over the age of twenty, tbh. Sorry.

VenusClapTrap · 16/09/2020 17:53

Bad.

Nixen · 16/09/2020 17:48

I know of two baby Sonny’s and I really don’t like the name

MikeUniformMike · 16/09/2020 17:47

Too nicknamey for my taste.

I know a Sunny, short for Sunday, and Sonny from Sonny and Cher is really Salvatore, which is rather nice.

RaininSummer · 16/09/2020 17:39

Not keen. I see old style policemen saying it. Would seem odd on a middle aged man.

RhiannonGyspy · 16/09/2020 17:22

Good point @itsjakeandamy we've not got a word surname thankfully! ☺️

I've come across a few small Sonnys. I'm not a fan personally but I don't think it's particularly "out there". The first I ever met must be in his late teens or early 20s now. (Be careful that you don't have a surname that makes it sound like a description though. I met one once whose surname was a relatively well-known place name - a bit like Devon. His name sounded ridiculous!)

SallySeven · 16/09/2020 17:00

To me it's a nickname, sorry.

Joseph is lovely.

RhiannonGyspy · 16/09/2020 16:59

Lots of people are Christened Sonny and have it on their birth certificate 🤔 appreciate the feedback though

OP posts:
Crunchymum · 16/09/2020 16:58

I like it too and know a few little Sonny's

TerribleCustomerCervix · 16/09/2020 16:58

Cute for a boy but I’d feel for a young man trying to get himself taken seriously as a “Sonny”

Thisismytimetoshine · 16/09/2020 16:58

It's not an actual name, it's a nickname. Nobody is actually christened Sonny. Please don't 🤦‍♀️
