Thinking of using Sonny (in our top three names), what do you think of it? Middle name Joseph.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Obviouspretzel · 18/09/2020 10:17

Sonny Corleone was taken seriously. However, his real name was Santino.

I like it, but only really as a nickname I think.

LittleTiger007 · 18/09/2020 08:30

Don’t be put off by what people write here. You will get extreme viewpoints. I’m a teacher and we have a Sonny at school. Whilst unusual, the fact is that it’s the person you love first then the name gains favour when you know good people with a certain name. People in your circle will love your son and therefore love his name. It’s also better to have a unique name than be one of thousands of Oliver’s or Josh’s in a class.

@theyeasayer

I agree with you, re: trolls, they live under bridges and say "I'm a troll, fol-dee-rol" all the time.

They have never been accused of sneering at peoples names - I think you will find that even the goats agree with that. Grin

bunnyonthemantle · 17/09/2020 18:52

I like it

TheYeaSayer · 17/09/2020 18:50

@mammysharkdoo

It's a lovely name. God there is some trolls on here. I think you have to be pretty cool to be called Sonny 🙂
What a stupid post.

The OP asked "What do you think of it?" That is the whole point of the Baby Names board: to garner opinions.

Also, you don't know what a troll is.

bananachocolate · 17/09/2020 18:49

I know an 18 year old Sonny and it's very nice on him, doesn't sound juvenile at all

SimonJT · 17/09/2020 18:48

Sonny is a popular Hindu and Sikh name, there is nothing patronising, horrendous or nicknamey about a traditional religious name.

Your name does not bestow any character/personality traits on you 🙄 What a ridiculous post 😂😂😂

Trolls because we don't like a name? And yes you'd have to be "cool" to make it work because it'd be even more ridiculous on your average Joe.

sorryforswearing · 17/09/2020 18:08

I know a Sonny. I think it’s fine for him but he’s about 6. Can’t imagine it for a man.

As for the suggestion of Sully. I don’t like the meaning of the word. Wouldn’t like to give it too my son.

TheYeaSayer · 17/09/2020 18:03

Agree with others it's more like a nickname, and a nickname for a young person at that. All Sonnys I can think of have had it as a NN.

I can't imagine a middle-aged high court judge called Sonny.

Whatsyourflava · 17/09/2020 11:33

@happylittlechick I was going to say the same thing! Completely respect all opinions but the idea that Sonny "isn't a name", when it's about to be top 100 is quite funny to me. I think some of us are a bit behind the curve on Mumsnet maybe - I remember a few years ago on here people used to say Albert was ridiculous "What parent in their right would ever use it these days" and now that's totally mainstream/top 100/top 50 too!

I really love the name Sonny.

Steamfan · 17/09/2020 09:24

SallySeven I was just going to say the same thing!!!

AlphaJura · 17/09/2020 09:24

"Solomon nn Solly? *"
*
This is my ds's name. Some people call him Sol aswell. I don't mind Sonny but it sounds a bit 'nicknamey' to me.

Or Sullivan, Nn Sully?

SallySeven · 17/09/2020 09:20

Makes me think of "Sonny" Corleone in the Godfather.

It's newly popular as a standalone name. Used to be more of a nickname, like Junior.

wigglebox · 17/09/2020 07:40

Sorry I think this is an awful name

PeaceAndHarmoneeee · 17/09/2020 07:29

I don't like it- to me it's a nickname for son not a child's name.

Plus it sounds like 'sunny' which also isn't a name to me it's an adjective.

The one Sonny I know is anything but 'sunny' infact he's a bit of a misery!

DoTheMaccaroni · 17/09/2020 07:26

I know a few Sonny’s so I’m confused by the comments. It’s a great name OP!

QueenofAsgard · 17/09/2020 06:08

The most troublesome child I ever met was called Sonny.

It's not a proper name really is it?

happylittlechick · 17/09/2020 06:00

All people saying it's not a name- it's 103 most common. I imagine it will be top 100 next year if that bothers you.
It's not my style but it's fine.

badg3r · 17/09/2020 05:57

I don't like it at all, sorry OP. What are your other two top choices?

Gatelodge · 17/09/2020 05:53

@Thisismytimetoshine

It's a diminutive, basically the equivalent of Junior. Give the kid a name of his own.
This.
ImANosyNeighbour · 16/09/2020 23:01

I like it.

MissHoney85 · 16/09/2020 22:58

My sister named her DS Samson with the intention of nicknaming him Sonny. It never stuck as Samson suits him so well, but I guess it's an option for him in the future. Maybe there's a name like that you could give him where Sonny could be a nickname but he has the choice of a 'proper' name?
