Would you please tell me how you would pronounce this name?

We are expecting a baby boy next month. DP is very keen to call him Ares (should add, DP is Greek, pronouncing it over in Greece wouldn't be a problem at all).

My only concern is that we live in England, and I have a feeling he'll spend the rest if his life correcting people. Would anyone mind telling me if they read Ares, how they would pronounce it?

We do have a couple of very pronoucable back ups if required 😁

Ar-Rez, although it does sound like Arse

Crystalknobs · 13/09/2020 17:07

I’m from SE London and if my DF said it , it would sound as if his name was (H)arris

beautifulxdisasters · 13/09/2020 17:06

Sorry OP but I see "arse" too Blush

CaMePlaitPas · 13/09/2020 17:04

I would read it like 'Arse' because are-s...

Reader1984 · 13/09/2020 17:03

Ah-rez

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 13/09/2020 17:00

Aris where I am is a colloquialism for arse (I think it is in cockney too).

HappyDinosaur · 13/09/2020 17:00

I know a Greek man who is called Aris, pretty sure he doesnt think it is spelt incorrectly, so I'd go with that if that's the pronunciation you want.

FlamedToACrisp · 13/09/2020 16:59

Ar-eez

HerNameWasEliza · 13/09/2020 16:58

Aris I'd pronouce a-ris, whereas you put ar-is which to me is more like ah-ris. Not sure you're re-spelling would entirely help.

PrometheusB · 13/09/2020 16:57

Sorry to make it more clear, the Greek would say Ar-iss

But if I suggest Aris DP doesn't like it because it's spelled wrong Grin

Airres?

PrometheusB · 13/09/2020 16:54

Thank you for all the responses - Dear God I didn't see 'Arse' at all, I'm glad I asked!!

It is indeed the Greek God (brutality and all!) However whilst as an English person we say Air-eez like the star sign, the actual pronunciation is Ar-is.

DP won't accept my suggestion of Aris, to ensure it's pronounced the way he would like it. But I've been totally put off by the idea he may be called Arse so I'm glad I have some back ups!! Grin

I read ‘arse’ and had to re-read to check. I reckon he will get arse a lot I’m afraid. Kids can be mean. At my school there was an ‘Anil’ and everyone called him Anal. And in the end he just sort of shrugged and accepted the inevitable.

blueskiesandapples · 13/09/2020 16:50

Air-eez like the star sign

SallySeven · 13/09/2020 16:50

Ah-Rez

whiteroseredrose · 13/09/2020 16:49

Like ninkanink said it could be pronounced like a plural of Are, Ares which sounds very much like Arse.

Suzi888 · 13/09/2020 16:49

Aries mike the star sign Hmm I think

Ninkanink · 13/09/2020 16:48

(I know that’s not what you asked, but I felt I had to say it)

Ninkanink · 13/09/2020 16:47

I wouldn’t worry about how people will pronounce it...it’s a straight up no from me because you just know the poor boy will be called ‘arse’.

The name itself is great, but you just can’t do that to the child.

SE13Mummy · 13/09/2020 16:46

A-rez

SnugglySnerd · 13/09/2020 16:46

Like Aries the star sign. I have to say though, I am a teacher. I always ask the students to correct me in our first lesson together if I say their name wrong during the register and I write it out phonetically on my seating plan. When I have forgotten and pronounced it wrong later in the term it is almost always the rest of the class that corrects me so I shouldn't worry too much, their friends and teachers will all learn to say it correctly. It is a lovely name.

Nonamesavail · 13/09/2020 16:44

Arhh rez

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 13/09/2020 16:43

Yes, the same as the star sign here too but not a clue if that's right.

Falcone · 13/09/2020 16:43

Aries

dicksplash · 13/09/2020 16:43

I would say Air-rees - how does your DH pronounce it?
