We are expecting a baby boy next month. DP is very keen to call him Ares (should add, DP is Greek, pronouncing it over in Greece wouldn't be a problem at all).

My only concern is that we live in England, and I have a feeling he'll spend the rest if his life correcting people. Would anyone mind telling me if they read Ares, how they would pronounce it?

We do have a couple of very pronoucable back ups if required 😁

air- rees

whiteroseredrose · 13/09/2020 18:27

Alex is kinder unless you're in Manchester where every other boy was called Alex because of Mr Ferguson!

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 13/09/2020 18:24

OP yes arris means arse. My mum always says Toyota's strapline should be "Put your arris in a Yaris". Some ppl will definitely hear "arris" rather than "Ares".

Bravefarts · 13/09/2020 18:18

In my accent ah-ris is virtually the same as arse.

Alex is a lovely name.

2Kidsinatrenchcoat · 13/09/2020 18:12

If I’d only seen it written down I’d pronounce it air-eez. I know a Greek Aris short for Aristides (I might have spelt that wrong! I’ve never seen his full name written down). Alex is nice too but honestly English people should just have to learn to pronounce foreign names without foreign people having to give their children more English sounding names to help them fit in.

RaininSummer · 13/09/2020 18:11

I wouldn't know how to pronounce as I would assume it wasn't 'arrs' so I would ask.

chillied · 13/09/2020 18:00

Alex is a great name

ihaveanunusualsurname · 13/09/2020 17:53

Aris is Cockney rhyming slang for arse

Tistheseason17 · 13/09/2020 17:51

Child will be called Arse. First thing I thought ' kidsxsre cruel. I'd change the name.

Gingernaut · 13/09/2020 17:51

Air-eez

3billboardsoutsidebarnsley · 13/09/2020 17:50

I’ve heard arris used as slang for arse too . It’s too much of a risk when it comes to unpleasant nicknames or bullying . Alex is lovely or even Harris .

qwertypie · 13/09/2020 17:42

AH-rez

Ironmanrocks · 13/09/2020 17:37

hard A - Rez. Knew a Spanish girl with the same name. I love it.

RuthW · 13/09/2020 17:34

I would say Airs

superram · 13/09/2020 17:33

A (as in baby language, abc) Rez

Shayisgreat · 13/09/2020 17:27

I think it's a really cool name and would have pronounced it Ar - ess if I read it before hearing it. I think you should use it, it's cool, a bit different, and your DH is Greek.

If your child is going to be teased, other kids will find things to tease them about. If it's not the name, it will be something else. I wouldn't let the fact that it's an anagram of arse put you off a pretty cool name.

Prettybluepigeons · 13/09/2020 17:25

Alex a million times over

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 13/09/2020 17:24

@PrometheusB

Are we all in agreement that Alex would be far kinder for my poor child? Grin
Alex is a lovely name!
Prettybluepigeons · 13/09/2020 17:23

Arz

MileyWiley · 13/09/2020 17:20

Agree child will be teased and called arse though

ravenmum · 13/09/2020 17:20

Aries. But yes, he would be called Arse by his schoolmates.

MileyWiley · 13/09/2020 17:19

Air- ez

2bazookas · 13/09/2020 17:18

That should be the star sign Aries, of course

2bazookas · 13/09/2020 17:18

I'd spell and pronounce it Aires (like the star sign), nice name.

Ares is going to curse him with the lifelong nickname Arse.
