Avery

DH and I both love the name Avery for a boy. I realise it’s a bit marmite so not especially looking for preference on the name. My worry is that although it is traditionally a boys name, the popularity of it as a girl name in the US will take over entirely. Very happy with a unisex name but I hate to give my kid a name that in 30 years time is the new ‘Hillary’ or ‘Leslie’ where men are almost laughed at for having a ‘girls name’. Thoughts?

Not sure i would name a child after a make of weighing scales! As an alternative, you could try Salter?

Sausagedog1 · 21/09/2020 08:09

I think it sounds like a girl's name because it's similar in sound to lots of girls names.
People will often in life assume before meeting him that he is a girl. It's up to you if that's a risk you want to take.
Personally I like the name but I know my DH was dead set against feminine sounding names (I wanted Jesse for example)
I don't think it will be the new Lesley or Hilary because it's not popular enough. Having said that it might rise in popularity, hard to tell.
I think of you really love it go for it, but if you have reservations and another name you both like, maybe go for something safer. Good luck.

I grew up in the states and it was very popular for boys in the 90s, I don't know any female Averys - it must be a fairly new thing. I didn't actually know it was unisex, I'd just assume boy.

TraderJoe · 20/09/2020 14:17

There's a boy Avery in my DC's class. Lovely name.

len1234 · 20/09/2020 14:12

Though I prefer it on a girl, I think it's great on a boy as well. Go for it!

fairydustandpixies · 19/09/2020 12:28

Reminds me of sticky labels!

Gatr · 19/09/2020 12:27

I like it and would say its unisex

AcrobaticCardigan · 19/09/2020 12:25

Oh god - I can’t look past the bird cage aspect - which would be spelt aviary. Conjures thoughts of newspaper & bird shit. I suspect for many people. Why would you?!

HeronLanyon · 14/09/2020 06:13

Always thought it was a girls name but this based solely on only knowing one - a girl.
Also think of Avery hill - area of SE London.
Also labels.
For a boy it reminds me of Aubrey.

joystir59 · 14/09/2020 05:50

A bird enclosure is an aviary not an avery

Laserbird16 · 14/09/2020 05:49

I think of address labels

joystir59 · 14/09/2020 05:49

Avery is a market leading brand of printable labels

Fishfingersandwichplease · 14/09/2020 05:46

Didn't know Avery was a name but l would say it is a girl's one at a push.

HermioneMakepeace · 14/09/2020 05:31

I know four Avery's, but then I'm in Oz and it's a very popular name here. All girls, BTW.

OP, were there any other names you like?

MercyBodle · 14/09/2020 05:22

While traditionally a boy's name it is used so much more for girls these days, that, yes, it's like Hilary and Leslie. And Ashley and Kelly and Evelyn.

bunnyonthemantle · 13/09/2020 21:02

Unisex. There was an Avery on Nashville. I think it's ok

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 13/09/2020 21:01

It’s unisex now, originally a boy’s name. It’s fine. I know a 1 yr old boy called Avery

mamaoffourdc · 13/09/2020 20:18

My youngest (girl) is Avery x

occa · 13/09/2020 20:18

I like it and it's unisex to me.

Ataris · 13/09/2020 20:15

LOVE this name, was really gutted that it doesn't go with our surname so I couldn't use it for DD. I probably wouldn't use it for a boy though...

PurBal · 13/09/2020 20:12

I assume boys name

ParadiseLaundry · 13/09/2020 20:09

I desperately wanted to call DS1 this as I wanted a name that was not unheard of but was unusual enough for him to be the only one at school with it for example. I was watching Nashville at the time and loved it.!DH didn't like it at all and we called him something else, Top 100 but not outrageously popular where we are. I pretty much forgot about it until he started nursery. Where there was another boy called Avery Grin

It's a lovely name, I'm sure it's veering towards unisex now but still definitely acceptable for a boy, I'd probably just go with a bit more of a masculine middle name.

MyMomisaplumber · 13/09/2020 20:02

Greengrocers scales and bird enclosure are my first thought.

Sunbird24 · 13/09/2020 19:56

Avery is Fern’s older brother in Charlotte’s Web, so I’ve only ever known it as a boy’s name.

JustanotherTuesday · 13/09/2020 19:51

I think it's a great name but I do think it is more for a girl .
