Awful or not? If you think it’s awful do you have any ideas for something else that could give a Ginny nickname?

An old joke is
Her name is Virginia. They called her Virgin for short but not for long

danascully96 · 23/09/2020 06:36

Virginia is gorgeous. “Meet Virginia” and “Only the Good Die Young” make me swoon over the name. Honestly? I know people named Virginia and they usually go by Ginny, but I’ve never thought much of the “virgin” thing even when hearing the full name. If you call her Ginny as a child, that’ll protect her from any bullies I think. It’s such a pity that people think Virginia should be buried for good just because of the possibility some kid might mock her. There’s a long line of strong women named Virginia — it’s time to be revived ❤️

I don't think DC get teased about names in the way they did back in the day. We're all a bit more sophisticated and can cope with names that aren't Dave and Karen.

Virginia is a lovely name, I think of Virginia Woolf and Virginia Wade.

groovergirl · 22/09/2020 06:48

My DD 12 is Virginia, known as Ginny or Gin-Gins. No one in her co-ed school has ever called her Vagina; I would have heard about it from her if they had. I do think all these dire warnings are a bit much. What sort of kids are your DC going to school with? They sound a bit rough, frankly.

As for Virgin -- it didn't hurt Sir Richard Branson.

Minty82 · 18/09/2020 18:46

I know a wonderful one in her 80s but I think the teasing would be a bit relentless for a child. I love the rest of your shortlist, especially Iris Evelyn.
My dad had a cousin called Jane who was always known as Jinny (with a J), or as a PP said Georgina could work.

purplepoppet92 · 18/09/2020 17:59

No sorry not a fan. And I would worry that they'd get teased - "virgin" or "vagina"

Cherrylipbalm · 18/09/2020 15:41

Absolutely awful but MN will love it.
Any frumpy, ugly name seems to be a winner on Mumsnet

Sunbird24 · 18/09/2020 15:18

The current shortlist:
Iris Evelyn
Evelyn Iris
Florence Rose

All except Iris are family names, Iris is my favourite flower and goddess of the rainbow which seems appropriate for this year! However, as I said I’m not even pregnant yet so it’s all just pie in the sky... Only playing with ideas while praying my IVF works!

I feel like Virginia will always get called Virgin, sorry.

Gia
Giana
Genevieve
Giovanna
Juliana / Julianna
Regina

Hope you find a name you love. 😊

beinggood · 18/09/2020 11:25

I think Jean is a beautiful name and could get you Jeannie or Ginny.

Redcups64 · 13/09/2020 23:19

No. She would constantly be called virgin or vagina.

Kids are mean.

VenusClapTrap · 13/09/2020 22:56

Eugenia could be shortened to Ginny.

Aquamarine1029 · 13/09/2020 19:34

No no no. I went to school with a Virginia and she was called vagina constantly. I remember very vividly her saying how much she hated her name.

Unseeliequeen · 13/09/2020 19:29

Like it.

Sunshineandsparkle · 13/09/2020 18:37

I couldn’t imagine a baby Virginia. I can also imagine her getting called Virgin as a teenager.

Holyrivolli · 13/09/2020 18:36

She’d get teased horribly at school about it. Virgin or Vagina. As a grown up it’s a lovely name - as a kid, just no.

BabyLlamaZen · 13/09/2020 18:32

I prefer Ginevra

itsjakeandamy · 13/09/2020 13:42

I usually think the "your child will be hideously bullied for their name" answers are over-the-top and sometimes ridiculous. This is one where I think they are true. If I meet an adult Virginia I wouldn't blink an eyelid. If my children were at school with one I think there would be other children who would constantly snigger or worse.
I like Genevieve or Ginevra as options. Even Geneva would work.

ZebraKid71 · 13/09/2020 13:25

I absolutely love it!

nutellatoast · 13/09/2020 11:05

Please don't call your daughter Virginia she will endlessly teased and called virgin.
If you like Ginny call her Ginny or Genevieve, Ginervra, Ginnifer, Imogen etc

Sunbird24 · 13/09/2020 11:05

I’m not even pregnant yet, was just insomnia musings for the future while I’m at the start of an IVF cycle so there’s a whole lot of what if going on!
I appreciate all the responses, confirms what I thought too. It only popped into my head as I have a family member with the nickname and was thinking about other ways to get to it.

Imogen known as Ginny?

ginghamtablecloths · 13/09/2020 10:03

A colleague had this name and despite shortening it to Ginny was teased throughout her schooldays, sneered at - Virgin - as you can imagine. She had to grow a thick skin. She went to an all girls' school - can you imagine how much worse it would be with boys? I wouldn't lumber a child with that.

Ellmau · 13/09/2020 09:59

Ginevra

IslandLulu · 13/09/2020 09:56

Re-thinking my answer... I still think Virginia is a lovely name. But I guess it is underused for a reason. I can see how it might lead to unwanted teasing in school.

Maybe have it for a middle name?

Or go for Jennifer, Jane, Georgina, Georgianna, Gianna, Gillian, Genevieve, with nn Ginny.
