What do you think of Rowan for a boy?

I didn't realise it was unisex, always thought of it as a boys name.

In terms of the name itself it depends what you are looking for. One word of warning is that Rowan is getting extremely popular at the same time as other similar names like RoMan (which is one of the top fastest rising boy names). There's 2 Roman's at our small local nursery and I'm forever being asked "is that Ro_an with an M or W". I picked the name as I thought it was familiar but a bit different but i stupidly hadn't checked the statistics or I'd have spotted that in the last couple of years there's now nearly 3,000 babies a year called Roman, Rowan, Rohan etc. I know it's illogical but it bothers me but probably wouldn't bother others. The names all sound quite different to me but I can see why they merge into one if there's a class with Reuben Rowan and Roman in.

Here's a graph showing the growth in numbers for Roman if you're interested:

It's a lovely name

Hazeldine · 08/09/2020 19:31

It’s lovely. I think of it more as a boy’s name, although I know it can be used for both. It’s much more commonly male than female in both the UK and US, and the famous examples I can think of are all male (Atkinson, Williams). I like it a lot, it seems like a very down to earth name to me.

Lovely name

FraterculaArctica · 08/09/2020 19:27

Favourite ever name. I have one :-) Would have used for a girl as well. And it's TOTALLY different from Roman - completely unrelated etymology.

PlantPotting · 08/09/2020 19:25

It's my baby girls name so obviously I'm biased in associating it with girls. In reality it's unisex but still predominantly boys in England.
However in Scotland it's a girl name and is in the top 100 list for girls (rising fast) but does not feature in the top 100 boy list.
In America if you look at the statistics the name appears to be transitioning to a girl name the way Ashley and Hilary did, potentially as a few celebrities have named their daughter's Rowan.

I know several of each sex. Lovely name!

MikeUniformMike · 08/09/2020 19:13

It's nice but Roman seems very popular right now, as are names like Reuben, Rufus, Rory etc so it might seem a bit samey.

janetmendoza · 08/09/2020 18:44

Yes lovely - also Rohan

Bananarana · 08/09/2020 18:44

Lovely name! I only know boys.

Oneandabean · 08/09/2020 18:33

I only think of it as a boys name. Never met a female Rowan.

hippyhappyhoppyhuppy · 08/09/2020 18:32

Great name!

Usuallytootiredbuthappyanyway · 08/09/2020 18:31

I think it's a lovely name and yes, have only met male Rowans before

scrivette · 08/09/2020 18:31

I love the name.

mrwalkensir · 08/09/2020 18:28

yes it's unisex, but it's lovely for both :)
