What are your thoughts on the name Roman?

Yes, Dorcas is a girl.

CatsArePeopleToo · 10/09/2020 20:13

Pretty popular where I come from but I don't really like it. Maybe because at school i had a crush on Roman who turned out to be an arsehole.

Whatsyourflava · 08/09/2020 13:10

Not a name I like but it's booming in popularity so many others must love it and I must be in the minority.
I agree with earlier comment that it's a very "OK! Magazine" name. Quite a lot of D-listers picking the name it seems, but that doesn't make it a bad name.
I prefer Ronnie.

PlantPotting · 08/09/2020 12:59

My baby daughter is called Rowan with a W. I must say it does get confusing with all the Roman, Rowan (and Rohans, Ronan's) about. There's actually 2 baby Roman's at our small local nursery, so it's definitely much popular than it was a couple of years ago if that bothers you.
I get asked "is that Ro_an with an M or W" a lot more than I expected to be honest but I hadn't checked the statistics properly when I picked the name ... and these things may not bother you anyway.
Ronnie is a nice name in its own right. There's way more babies registered as Ronnie than Ronald these days anyway.

When's baby due? Best of luck with it all. Naming babies is hard.

MikeUniformMike · 08/09/2020 12:53

I know an adult Dorcas and afaik she doesn't.

Minty82 · 08/09/2020 12:05

Dorcas is a girl’s name - it’s the Greek version of Tabitha.
Don’t like Roman at all I’m afraid, at least for people without a connection to the cultures in which it’s an established classic.

AriettyHomily · 08/09/2020 11:55

I know three now, still love it and love RoRo

pinkpinecone · 08/09/2020 11:54

They could well get called Dork for short though

MikeUniformMike · 08/09/2020 11:51

Dorcas is lovely.

pinkpinecone · 08/09/2020 11:48

Roman is a nice name and could be be Ro for short. Romy is a girl's name. Remy is another nice name it's unisex but the Y spelling seems more popular for boys and the Remi spelling for girls.

Scarby9 · 08/09/2020 11:39

I know siblings Roman, Marius and Dorcas - not Greek or Roman, just like Classical names.

Luckingfovely · 08/09/2020 11:36

I adore it! So much it makes me slightly broody...

Viletta · 08/09/2020 11:27

@FluffyEggsontoast Rudy sounds like "rude" to me. I also like Ronnie, but don't like Ronald.

Rowan is currently doing the shift from boy's name to unisex name, which means it will probably become seen as a girls only name before too long. You could end up with the equivalent of the last generation of boys named Carol or Evelyn or Hillary.

Natalie654321 · 08/09/2020 11:11

I really like this name. I also really like Luca too.

Tonightstheteriyakichicken · 08/09/2020 11:10

It seems a strong name to me. I hadn't realised that it's become more popular of late.
Rather than the film director, I think of
Roman Abramovich who owns Chelsea FC.

unmarkedbythat · 08/09/2020 11:08

Roman is ok but I much prefer Rowan which is more timeless and classic.

Hmm

How'd you work that out? Roman has been in use as a given name in a range of cultures for centuries. Look up the origins of its use in Russia and Eastern Europe.

FeedMeSantiago · 08/09/2020 11:05

I know a very handsome adult Roman so positive connotations for me. I don't think of Roman Polanksi.

It is becoming very popular but I think it's a nice strong name.

Bananarana · 08/09/2020 11:05

I'm not a fan. Sounds like a Roman soldier.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 08/09/2020 10:57

Polanski.

But I don't like it much regardless. It just feels a bit silly, like you wanted him to be all strong and mighty and went "well the Roman empire was pretty cool, let's name him after that".

Plus as a few people have pointed out, the name is rising in popularity. The only thing less ok than being called Roman is being one of two kids in the class called Roman.

Grufallosfriends · 08/09/2020 10:31

Romy, Romilly are girls names.

Roman is ok but I much prefer Rowan which is more timeless and classic.

unmarkedbythat · 08/09/2020 09:53

Absolutely love. Would have used for one of ours if we didn't have a surname that would have made people think of Polanski.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 08/09/2020 09:49

It is having a moment and will date, I fear. Romy is 100% a girls’ name.

ImaSababa · 08/09/2020 08:44

It's very OK! Magazine.

WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat · 08/09/2020 07:44

OK, provided he wasn't built in a day.
