He thinks it's a really sweet name, but I'm not sure. We already have a Jasper and I'm worried Jasper and Rupert together sounds a bit posh! I like to think of Jasper as a bit more versatile and quirky. Does anyone have anything else that would work? What are your thoughts?

Other names DH likes but I've vetoed are

  • Oscar (the cat! 😂)
  • Felix (know about 3)

I quite like Atlas and Casper (I know, it's a 'no' with Jasper!) but that's it really.

Jasper and Rupert are lovely. I wouldn't worry about people thinking they're posh. If they're not, that'll become clear when people meet them surely? How many people of consequence will hear their names without meeting them? What will happen if they both have "posh" names?

Much like with drugs in the 1980s, just say no. For me there are too many connotations with a particular era and 'class' of Britishness that are best left in the past.

Plenty of good other off-beat or traditional boys' names that would go well with Jasper, such as those suggested by a PP.

In the military though, don't they call the posh guys "Ruperts"?

HanPanPeg · 04/09/2020 13:25

Tobias?

I love the name Rupert. My children's classes are full of the older, traditional but not biblical names and I love them.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 04/09/2020 13:24

I love Rupert. But I’m old enough to remember Rupert the Bear.

Feagle · 04/09/2020 13:22

Rupert is a terrible combination of horrendously twee and clichéd-wet-upper-class. The only one I knew was an Old Etonian who was addressed by his friends as 'Roops'. He was terribly nice, in a Tim Nice But Dim kind of way, but every time someone said 'Roops', I felt slightly repelled.

I think Rupert has become a bit more popular over the past few years and as it has done its being used by a wider sociopath economic group of parents and has thus lost its posh association.
IT does go very well with Jasper. I personally love it and would use it.
A more offbeat name to go with Jasper is Mica.
Or there is Jarvis
Good luck. Do tell us what you decide
