He thinks it's a really sweet name, but I'm not sure. We already have a Jasper and I'm worried Jasper and Rupert together sounds a bit posh! I like to think of Jasper as a bit more versatile and quirky. Does anyone have anything else that would work? What are your thoughts?

Other names DH likes but I've vetoed are

  • Oscar (the cat! 😂)
  • Felix (know about 3)

I quite like Atlas and Casper (I know, it's a 'no' with Jasper!) but that's it really.

Jeremy or Barnaby?

ProperVexed · 07/09/2020 19:10

I love Rupert but DH vetoed it.
How about:
Barney
Hugo
Angus
Sebastian
Horatio
( I do like a posh name!)

@SlowDown76mph

Rupert is a nickname that squaddies give to a certain type of officer. It isn't complimentary. And can you imagine if Rupert the Bear had a revival? Poor kid! It's one of those 'higher risk' names to give a baby.
what kind of officer? just one they don't like, or is there more to it?
garlictwist · 07/09/2020 19:01

I'm afraid I can't abide the name Rupert. It just sounds like a name for a young Tory toff. Which is fine if you live in Surrey.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 07/09/2020 18:34

I like Rupert, it definitely goes well with Jasper.

Asking, naively, as a non-Brit, can you just let it go and choose the name that you like?

Short answer? No. Grin

LynetteScavo · 07/09/2020 18:31

Felix & Oscar

Jasper & Rupert

James and Edward

Frank and Eric

Some names just go together.

I love Rupert, I don't think it's posh. Hugo also goes well, as do Theo, Angus, Hamish & Isaac and Elliott.

dollypartonscoat · 07/09/2020 18:23

They're all cat names!

Rafe?

Roselilly36 · 07/09/2020 18:04

I don’t like the name Rupert at all.

Magicbabywaves · 07/09/2020 17:57

Pottytoes · 07/09/2020 17:57

Jasper and

Lawrence

villamariavintrapp · 07/09/2020 17:51

Love jasper. Rudy? I think that's more quirky. Don't like Rupert at all.

Charliescar · 07/09/2020 17:26

My son is 20 and called Rupert . We are not posh and my son definitely isn’t it ! He is an alternative type .

So no I don’t think of Eton and didn’t when we chose the name

Unseeliequeen · 07/09/2020 17:18

Robert
Edward
Jiminy
Cricket
Marlon

MrsSnarget · 06/09/2020 14:26

Love Jasper. Jasper & Rupert go almost too well together

Some great suggestions above, but please not Tobias/Toby.

Albert (Bertie) is my name of the moment.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 06/09/2020 14:20

My uncle spent his childhood getting the shit kicked out of home for having a "posh boy" name on a very unposh estate. Hopefully things have moved on a bit, but I'd still consider the socio-economic area I was raising my kids in before naming them.

Southwestten · 06/09/2020 13:25

@BurtonHouse

Far too Tory posh boy for my taste.
Until I started coming in mumsnet I’d never realised names had such class connotations. For those who say the a is ‘posh’, what are the consequences of giving a child a posh name? Isn’t it a bit old fashioned to assign names to socio-economic groups? Is it acceptable to describe a name as ‘common’?
JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 05/09/2020 22:58

I know two Ruperts at work and they're not really posh, just fairly average MC guys.

Felix is more popular but not massively so. I think you want to avoid repeating sounds so agree Oscar out with Jasper.

Hugo or Rafe also nice?

FunnysInLaJardin · 05/09/2020 22:58

I love Jasper, but not so keen on Rupert.

I have a Fabian and a Rafe and both would go well with Jasper

MyNameHasBeenTaken · 05/09/2020 22:51

I know a young rupert.
What about robert?
Similar name, but I think it has more flexibility with nicknames

ZebraKid71 · 05/09/2020 20:35

I think Rupert is becoming a bit more frequently used so I wouldn't assume posh. I know two that definitely aren't. One goes by Ru which I like.

It goes perfectly with Jasper.

ameliapig22 · 05/09/2020 20:17

If you don't like Rupert, then don't name him it. Its your baby!

TheChristmasPrincess · 05/09/2020 19:39

I have a Jasper too! I would have loved to have named one of my boys Rupert but it doesnt really go with our surname. When we were talking about potential names and mentioned Rupert as a possibility, my dad and brother-in-law snickered and said it was too posh for our social status. I laughed at them and said they were old fashioned to think that. I think these days, names aren't as rooted in your socio-economic status, just as names are no longer restricted to your home country (Francesca is Italian, Emma is German, Jasper is Persian etc)

Just go with what you and your partner love! At worst people will make fun of him for having a posh name, even though he isn't posh. It's not the worst thing in the world and they will soon realise he isn't posh when he opens his mouth.

Astronica · 05/09/2020 13:03

I love Rupert and love it as Jasper's brother. However I'm not British and don't get this 'too posh' idea. Asking, naively, as a non-Brit, can you just let it go and choose the name that you like?
I also love Oscar and Felix and think they all work with Jasper. Rupert and Felix are better than Oscar though as they don't repeat the ending. Not so keen on Atlas. Aldous?

SlowDown76mph · 05/09/2020 08:39

Branleuse · 05/09/2020 08:38

i like Rupert. I have a friend who is one, although mostly called Roo
