my husband likes Rupert

He thinks it's a really sweet name, but I'm not sure. We already have a Jasper and I'm worried Jasper and Rupert together sounds a bit posh! I like to think of Jasper as a bit more versatile and quirky. Does anyone have anything else that would work? What are your thoughts?

Other names DH likes but I've vetoed are

  • Oscar (the cat! 😂)
  • Felix (know about 3)

I quite like Atlas and Casper (I know, it's a 'no' with Jasper!) but that's it really.

I'm not fond of Rupert, sorry. For some reason the sound of it always makes me think of someone blowing a raspberry. I realise that's a very personal and unusual objection, and trying to be objective, I do think it "fits" quite well with Jasper. Oscar and Felix do too, but I think maybe he endings of Oscar and Jasper are a bit too similar. Felix would probably be my pick of the bunch.

Finn? Luca?

Oncemorewithfeelin · 10/09/2020 01:44

Rupert the bear
Rupert Giles
That’s what spring to mind.

Jasper Carrot is the only jasper that springs to mind
Oscar the grouch
Felix the cat
Atlas - map
Casper the friendly ghost.

IAmAMother23 · 10/09/2020 01:04

Casper. Gin

ODFOx · 09/09/2020 10:52

Rupert is a great name and goes well with Jasper.. Rupert friends included Gregory, William, Algennon, Frederick and Ferdinand, Reginald and Rex: in case any of those appeal.

@Southwestten

Sabrina - is that absolutely true? Surely once at university they meet all sorts of different people. Also I’ve read posts on mn in which one went to private school and one to state and they can’t agree which to send their dc to. However, hypothetically if your dc went out with a posh person would you be disappointed?
I went to a "posh" university, and it was very, very cliquey - you did have to be the "right sort" to get into the "right" college. Being the product of a lowly comp just didn't cut it, and I wouldn't have had the money to keep up with their kind of lifestyle anyway. It's an old saw, but money does attract money.

I would only be disappointed if DC hooked up with a posh person if they turned out to be an arsehole, same as for any partner they might choose.

afaloren · 09/09/2020 10:06

I know this is a baby name thread but every time it pops up in active it makes me think someone is posting that their husband is a big fan of Rupert the Bear and it makes me smile. That’s all Grin

@Southwestten

Likewise, naming your child Kayden or Jaxxon when they're going to go to a private boarding prep and then on to Eton or Harrow is equally against the rules.

I don’t think that’s absolutely true. My ds went to one of those schools and there was a Dwayne who as far as I know got along fine.

I think he's probably the exception rather than the rule. I taught at a prep for a while - the boys were all George, Jago, Hugo, Edward, Julian etc. Definitely no Dwaynes!

Would you be horrified if your dc went out with or married a posh person? Would the fact they were posh override any other aspects of them such as being a nice person?

I think it's fairly unlikely that my DC would end up dating or marrying someone posh, as IME it's pretty difficult to break into those kinds of social circles if you aren't born into them.

overacupofcoffee · 09/09/2020 08:00

I like Rupert it would suit a baby, child and man.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 09/09/2020 07:57

@Southwestten

SirSamuel thank you for answering my question. How sad that people get bullied for their name.
I think baby names are one of the most emphatic indicators of quite how class based our society still is. It's more complex now than lower/middle/upper but by god it's still there. Naming your baby Tarquin or Julius if you live on a council estate in a northern industrial town is against the rules, there will be consequences. Likewise, naming your child Kayden or Jaxxon when they're going to go to a private boarding prep and then on to Eton or Harrow is equally against the rules.
Viviennemary · 08/09/2020 21:12

I think its pretty dire. Im not keen on any of the names mentioned so far. Otto is OK.

Frazzled2207 · 08/09/2020 21:10

Ps I know both a Jasper and Rupert (different families) and neither are posh at all. But I know what you mean. I crossed Tristan off the list because it sounded like a rugby playing public school boy, which our son will definitely not be.

Frazzled2207 · 08/09/2020 21:09

Further to what a pp said I think Milo goes nicely
I don’t mind Rupert actually I know a couple.
One seems to be called Roopsy by his dm though which is pretty awful.
Ru/Roo is probably the best nn

ButterflyRuns · 08/09/2020 21:07

I think of Murdoch, sorry.

Lots more about the posh aspect of Rupert. Would you be horrified if your dc went out with or married a posh person? Would the fact they were posh override any other aspects of them such as being a nice person?
I think it's more the concern of being seen as trying to pass yourself off as posh when you aren't, and people thinking you're a bit of a dick.

Plus the chance that if you live in a not very posh area you might be marking your child as a target for bullies by giving them a name that doesn't fit in.

@SabrinaThwaite

what kind of officer? just one they don't like, or is there more to it?

Posh junior army officer, often ex-Sandhurst - lacking experience and know how.

Ah, I see. I have met a few like that, not sure if any were actually called Rupert but can see it could be a generic name for them.
Mybobowler · 08/09/2020 11:01

I really dislike Rupert I'm afraid. I always think of sulky posh boys, and automatically say "Wupert" in my head.

Jasper is a much cooler name (but yes, still pretty posh!) - I'd think to pair it with:

Max
Alastair
Fergus
Arthur
Owen

twirlywooly · 07/09/2020 22:31

Not keen though nothing wrong with it with Jasper- as PP said horse bolted on not sounding slightly posh when you chose Jasper for your other son- though don't think either are absurdly posh.

Reuben - could still use Roo as nn
Franklin
Sebastian
Caspian
Atticus
Lawrence

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 07/09/2020 19:39

Love Rupert

Beamur · 07/09/2020 19:37

No avoiding the posh vibe! Great names though. I know a non posh Rupert (Rupe) which suits him. Has a brother called Godfrey..
Love Rudy.
I know a Jasper with a Charlie (Charles) as a brother which is a nice combo.
Giles?
We considered Laurence or Barnaby
Oliver (Ollie) is a nice solid name if not a bit too popular.
