DM and MIL don't love the name

After much deliberation DH and I thought we'd found the name for our DD but it's had a lukewarm reception from both of our mothers.

Charlotte Elizabeth ^
^
The surname isn't double barrelled, we want to use my maiden name as a middle name as we've done for DS.

Neither name has any family links. Charlotte is the only name we both love. To us, it's timeless rather than faddy and we think it suits her. It's pronounceable and people know how to spell it. Yes, we expect she won't be the only Charlotte in classes etc. but we haven't been able to think of a less popular name we both like. It's also similar in style in this way to DS' name.

Similarly we like Elizabeth and think it flows with Charlotte and the other names. Not as wedded to this one, but absolutely haven't come up with anything better.

Of course I'd have loved to have come up with the elusive holy grail of a beautiful name which is pronounceable, and easily spelt and which no one else has but we haven't managed to.

I'm not really sure why I'm posting. I think I'm a bit down that neither DM nor MIL could feign delight. Feedback has been that it's very popular, are we using royal names on purpose (no!), it's a bit of a mouthful and so on.

Is it a really dull name?

I think it's bloody awful of both mum and MIL to react the way they have.

It's a beautiful name and if it's one you like - fuck the rest of them. They're total names because they are elegant and timeless.

snappycamper · 01/09/2020 21:59

I never had a girl, but if I had she would have been Charlotte Elizabeth!

If you'd both love it, who gives a shit what your mum and MIL think? It's not up to them.

Obviously it's not up to a random stranger on the internet either, but for what it's worth I think it's a gorgeous, classic name.

BlueShed · 01/09/2020 21:58

Thanks everyone. Yes, she's here safe and well! I don't think either mum is trying to tell us what to do but neither had a particularly positive initial reaction. We haven't told anyone else and positioned it to both mums as 'we think we've got it'.

Oh and your name is great. Timeless, classic, lovely. Good choice I'd say.

GirlCalledJames · 01/09/2020 21:53

Three years on I still appreciate my daughter’s name every day. It’s such a nice feeling giving them a name you both love. So definitely Charlotte, it’s a great name.
I know a Charlotte Elizabeth and it works nicely.
I did tell everyone my daughter’s name at 12 weeks after the NIPT. Nobody really liked it and I couldn’t care less because I like it. You need that level of confidence in the name because some people have no manners.

beepbeepsheep · 01/09/2020 21:53

MIL did this with DD2's name. We told her a few we were considering. She said "oh but I LOVE the name Susie, what a shame you're not considering it". She went on and on about how much she wanted baby Susie. I managed not to ask why she didn't just name SIL that when she was born. Then MIL got a new cat, right before DD2 was born. Told her I knew a great name for the cat- Susie. She used the name then she finally shut tf up about it.

Ilovelblue · 01/09/2020 21:52

A friend's mother told her when she was thinking of names for her baby girl "Think of a name which will fit a title in front of it such as Queen, Princess, Lady etc etc". Charlotte and Elizabeth certainly fit the bill there!

Beautiful name.

gurglebelly · 01/09/2020 21:49

Is it possible that they are both disappointed not to find their own names somewhere in your daughter's name?

LemonyFace · 01/09/2020 21:49

Charlotte Elizabeth is a beautiful name!

CrazedInsomniac · 01/09/2020 21:48

Those names are the most inoffensive names possible — what is it your DM and MIL don’t like? Too inoffensive and beige?

JoanJosephJim · 01/09/2020 21:47

Never share the name until the baby is here because there will always be someone who doesn't like it.

This is your baby and therefore you and your Dh choose the name, both DM and MIL had their turn at naming children.

Charlotte Elizabeth is absolutely timeless and beautiful.

ThursdayLastWeek · 01/09/2020 21:46

They’ll love the baby and that’s what matters.

Time to harden your heart to other people’s opinions re: your baby. You’re likely to hear a lot of them in the coming months!

FWIW I think it’s a beautiful name.

MadameBlobby · 01/09/2020 21:44

Have you had the baby yet or are you still pregnant?

If the latter, that’s exactly why we never told anyone our names until the babies were here and were called it. My mum had this awful habit whenever we mentioned names at all of saying she didn’t like them. We weren’t actually asking for her opinion.

Anyway it’s your baby not theirs and it matters not a rat’s ass what your mum and MIL think.

Love51 · 01/09/2020 21:42

They don't need to love the name, they just need to love the child.
Has the child been born yet?
Are they a bit old fashioned? I am (and nowhere near grandmotherhood) and I couldn't get excited about details about a baby who hasn't been born yet. I knew the sex of one of mine due to late scans and still didn't trust that til he was born. It isn't lack of love, it is sort of a 'don't tempt fate' thing.

Thefaceofboe · 01/09/2020 21:41

My mum and MIL would be over the moon if I went for Charlotte Elizabeth! Lovely, classy name :)

janetmendoza · 01/09/2020 21:41

Fab names - stick to your guns

MsSquiz · 01/09/2020 21:39

Charlotte and Elizabeth were our top 2 girls names - we went with Charlotte.

I love them as they are both classic names, and I love all (well, probably the majority) of the diminutives of them.

Yes, they'll never be the only one with the name, but most people can pronounce and spell them

Stick to your choice, she's your baby

Lovely names.

littlecatfeet · 01/09/2020 21:36

It's a lovely name. Don't take their grumbles to heart, they will be used to the idea in a very short time and they will even forget they ever said anything! Which will also be infuriating, but oh well.

You don't need to make any explanation for your baby's name, it just is her name now, it belongs to her.

They are beautiful names. Ignore them and their bad manners.

Dilligaf81 · 01/09/2020 21:34

It's a lovely name.
My mil and DM (and to be honest dh) didn't really like the name I loved for my eldest dd but I was adament about it.
16 years later she is Poppy Grace, the name suits her and all agree that the name is just her.
What I'm saying is if you love it go with it.
I went for a name I wasn't in love with and we actually changed it when she was 10 months old. Blush

Fleamaker123 · 01/09/2020 21:34

How can you not like the names Charlotte Elizabeth?? They are classic names and totally inoffensive... how bizarre! Please don't let them put you off, they're lovely names. When we told my MIL the name of our youngest son, she said 'oh well, you can always cha

Sakura7 · 01/09/2020 21:33

Lovely name and I'm baffled what exactly they're objecting to. Please don't listen to them.
