DM and MIL don't love the name

After much deliberation DH and I thought we'd found the name for our DD but it's had a lukewarm reception from both of our mothers.

Charlotte Elizabeth ^
^
The surname isn't double barrelled, we want to use my maiden name as a middle name as we've done for DS.

Neither name has any family links. Charlotte is the only name we both love. To us, it's timeless rather than faddy and we think it suits her. It's pronounceable and people know how to spell it. Yes, we expect she won't be the only Charlotte in classes etc. but we haven't been able to think of a less popular name we both like. It's also similar in style in this way to DS' name.

Similarly we like Elizabeth and think it flows with Charlotte and the other names. Not as wedded to this one, but absolutely haven't come up with anything better.

Of course I'd have loved to have come up with the elusive holy grail of a beautiful name which is pronounceable, and easily spelt and which no one else has but we haven't managed to.

I'm not really sure why I'm posting. I think I'm a bit down that neither DM nor MIL could feign delight. Feedback has been that it's very popular, are we using royal names on purpose (no!), it's a bit of a mouthful and so on.

Is it a really dull name?

I think it's a lovely name. Who are these people who don't know there job is to say what a lovely name you've picked. Unless it's a name likely to cause issues there is no other response.

jessstan2 · 02/09/2020 00:03

The names you have chosen are lovely, would that more people would choose such classic names. Pay no attention to anyone who doesn't like them, it's not their business and they'll soon get used to it.

LarkDescending · 01/09/2020 23:37

Congratulations on your new arrival. You have chosen beautiful names. I hope you stick to your guns and, if necessary, make clear that it’s an announcement not a consultation.

ButteryPuffin · 01/09/2020 23:19

It's just rude and unkind to say anything other than 'That's lovely' in response to being told a baby's name. (Well, possibly unless it's Satan or Killer and they might be persuadable.) Did you sound tentative to the point of asking their approval? I would now tell them you've firmly decided and are delighted with the name. Any more lukewarm responses and you should say brightly that it's great to be the person who gets to choose!

BackforGood · 01/09/2020 23:09

How strange. I opened the thread expecting that you'd called you dc something completely ridiculous, not two lovely, classic, timeless names that are, as you say easy to spell and to pronounce.

MondeoFan · 01/09/2020 23:00

I like the name - it isn't exciting but isn't fuddy either.
I also like shortened versions too

Alwaysinpain · 01/09/2020 22:54

I liked the name Charlotte until I noticed that my Mum pronounces it "Char-LOT"

Not everyone likes my daughter's name but I love it and it suits her beautifully. That's all that matters

badg3r · 01/09/2020 22:53

How weird! I think it's a lovely name. Congratulations! They will get used to it. Only thing I can think of is if they really dislike the royal family, but they are both lovely names!

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 01/09/2020 22:52

Lovely names! And I'm a Charlotte so I'd know Wink

ElGuardiandenoche · 01/09/2020 22:48

@Luckingfovely

Why. Does. Anyone. Ever. Tell. Their. Families. What. Name. They. Are. Planning. To. Use.

(Yup, that took some effort and some use of full stops, but seriously, WHY?)

Because the baby is here and they have given her those names and told the parents what to call her, which is a normal thing to do.
HolyForkinShirt · 01/09/2020 22:39

It's a beautiful, timeless name. Ignore them.

Beautiful names!

liquoricecravings · 01/09/2020 22:33

Congratulations on the safe arrival of your daughter OP! You've chosen a beautiful name that is timeless. It's not a mouthful at all. There's no need to doubt your choice and I think your DM and MIL have been thoughtless and unkind with their comments.

Choppedupapple · 01/09/2020 22:28

I think that it’s a beautiful name

EL8888 · 01/09/2020 22:22

None of their business. As others have said, they had the chance to make their own choice with their children’s names. It’s now your turn with your child

Happymum12345 · 01/09/2020 22:21

Beautiful classic names!

Dinoctoblock · 01/09/2020 22:20

Always present baby names as a definite. Preferably in the birth announcement or at the point of first meeting the child.

Charlotte Elizabeth is lovely, and also has many cute nickname options too. Lottie Betty? Char Liz? 😂

seriousandloyal · 01/09/2020 22:11

Lovely names for your daughter.

RoseMartha · 01/09/2020 22:11

Beautiful names

Iwantacookie · 01/09/2020 22:07

My dm did this with ds2 "that's what your calling him?" Complete with facial features suggesting she wasnt happy. I said yes and if nanny doesnt like it she doesnt have to see him. Soon shut her up.

Grandmi · 01/09/2020 22:05

Beautiful name 💕

LazyDaisy10 · 01/09/2020 22:04

Beautiful name and really quite rude when the baby is actually here to comment that they dont like it! If you're both totally happy with it don't even consider changing it

Justjoshin22 · 01/09/2020 22:02

It’s a lovely name, congrats OP. It’s disappointing when other people make it clear they don’t like your choice but it’s their issue. I agree it’s a classic name

Firawla · 01/09/2020 22:02

It’s a lovely name! How rude of your mum and mil not to give a positive reaction
