Not Tobias, just Toby.

DS has a name like Alexander or Nicholas. He's always Alexander, never Alex; always Nicholas, never Nick. We expect his school friends will call him the shortened version in the future but for now he goes by his full name.

Now we are expecting DC#2 and we really like Toby. Tobias is nice too but I can't see we would ever call him it. But would it be odd to have Alexander and Toby rather than Alexander and Tobias?

What do you think of just Toby?

We have a Tobias but he has always been known as Toby. It's entirely up to you, Toby doesn't necessarily have to be short for anything.

Toby is high on our list and I'm having the same issue. I don't actually like the name Tobias, but wonder if we should give it to him so he has the option when he's older. But then I think, we're his parents, we hate the name Tobias, so let's go with Toby?

I don't think it matters that it's a shortened version. I don't see it as a proper shortened name. It would be weird if you named a kid Dave but not David or Andy but not Andrew but I think you can get away with Toby.

Following as this is my current dilemma!

Should add I am also a 'boy' haha

topcat2014 · 31/08/2020 19:58

He's never going to use Tobias though, surely.

My name is a short form boys name, never held me back

Davies1982 · 31/08/2020 19:55

I think you should give him a ‘proper name’ ie Tobias, if you have an ‘Alexander’

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 31/08/2020 19:53

Such a long name as Alexander never Alex with a Toby is weird to me. Very long and very short.

BookishZen · 31/08/2020 19:51

I like Toby and think you should just call him Toby.
I personally don’t see the point in giving your child a longer name that you never plan on using unless it’s more of a cute name on younger children eg Teddy that just doesn’t seem right on a middle aged man.
